SUMMARY:Performance:Karan Casey
DESCRIPTION:Karan Casey has long been one of the most innovative\, provocative\, and imitated voices in Irish folk music. Since embarking on her solo career after a stint as lead vocalist of the legendary band Solas\, she has released six solo albums\, a duo album\, and a children's album and has appeared on more than 50 albums in total. She has toured constantly throughout North America\, Europe and Japan\, performing solo\, with her own band and with many other artists\, often from outside the realm of Irish music. Her adventurous spirit results from the varied influences--classical music\, jazz\, and American pop--that Casey has made her own since growing up amid Irish traditional music in Ballyduff Lower\, County Waterford. Karan Casey\, says the Associated Press\, has \"a voice so beautiful\, it's almost impossible to avoid falling under her spell.\" This tour features Niamh Dunne on fiddle and vocals and Seán Óg Graham on guitar.

SUMMARY:Performance:Prometheus. Beginnings
DESCRIPTION:Prometheus. Beginnings is a devised dance theatre work\, conceived by Tzveta Kassabova with the cast\, that takes inspiration and ideas from two plays written by the Berlin-based playwright Kevin Rittberger. The piece creates the environment in which some of the pressing questions of our time float in\, come to focus\, and interact with each other. The piece is an exploration of an entanglement of movement\, spoken word\, improvisational music score by Steve Hilmy and the evocative set of the production. Prometheus. Beginnings was originally created in the context of the conference “Diffractive World-Making – Theatre and Science Beyond the Capitalocene” and an initial version was premiered at the University of Indiana.\n \n‘Through metamorphosis I alter my form\nWhich has given rise to nothing but greed\nMay my limbs be covered in soft bark\nHairs become leaves\nArms become branches\nAll that remains is radiance. ‘ —Kevin Rittberger

SUMMARY:Performance:University Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:The University Symphony Orchestra\, conducted by its music director\, Kenneth Kiesler\, performs one of the most beloved works in the repertoire for orchestra\, the Second Symphony by Finnish composer\, Jan Sibelius.\nThe program also features percussion soloist James Koo\, Winner of the 2023 SMTD Concerto Competition\, playing the virtuosic and colorful Percussion Concerto by Chen Yi. The first woman in China to receive a master’s degree in composition\, Chen Yi received her doctoral degree at Columbia University and joined the faculty of the University of Missouri at Kansas City in 1998. The following year she became a United States citizen\, and\, in 2001 she received the American Academy of Arts and Letters Charles Ives Living\, a cash grant awarded with the sole requirement of full-time composing. She has written major works for the Seattle Symphony Orchestra\, Cleveland Orchestra\, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The concert opens with an evocative out-take from the opera Nixon in China\, The Chairman Dances\, subtitled a Foxtrot for Orchestra\, by American composer John Adams. The word “Dances” in the title is a verb\, not a noun. The music depicts Madame Mao “crashing” a presidential banquet\, hanging paper lanterns\, and performing a dance\; Chairman Mao Zedong descends from his portrait\, and the two dance a foxtrot\, going back in time together.\n\nPROGRAM\nFeaturing James Koo\, percussion\, Winner\, 2023 SMTD Concerto Competition\nJohn Adams\, The Chairman DancesChen Yi\, Percussion Concerto Sibelius\, Symphony No. 2
