DESCRIPTION:In this interactive presentation\, Dr. Paul Fleming will discuss how to think about and approach creating communities where all people can thrive. In his work\, he partners with community-based organizations and community organizers to help bring equity and anti-racism principles into practice.  Dr. Fleming will highlight key themes from his book Imagine Doing Better: Why policies backfire and how prevention thinking can change everything\, which will help participants reflect on the status quo\, imagine better futures\, and learn strategies for being a changemaker to create a new future in their communities and the world.  \n\nDr. Fleming is an Associate Professor at the University of Michigan's School of Public Health and co-founder of the Collaborative for Transformative Public Health. His research and teaching focus on the root causes of racial health inequities and strategies to address them. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Beyond Rankings: Bayesian Learning of Parity\, Tiers\, and Dynamic Regimes
DESCRIPTION:Rankings are widely used to summarize comparative information\, but they can suggest differences that the data do not strongly support. In paired-comparison data\, two competitors may receive different ranks even when their underlying abilities are very similar. This raises a fundamental statistical question: when should competitors be ranked separately\, and when should they be regarded as statistically tied?\n\nIn this talk\, I will present a Bayesian framework for learning rank structure and competitive balance directly from paired-comparison data. A geometric constraint on latent abilities controls the extent of ability differences and allows rank tiers to emerge naturally when competitors are not meaningfully distinguishable. I will then extend the framework to longitudinal data using a hidden Markov model\, allowing competitive balance and rank structure to change across persistent historical regimes.\n\nI will discuss the statistical formulation\, computation\, and theoretical properties of the model\, and illustrate the approach with applications to the National Basketball Association and the English Premier League. These applications show how the framework can identify changes in competitive balance\, recover meaningful rank tiers\, and quantify uncertainty in rankings. DESCRIPTION:Please join the English Department for the 2026 Annual Lora Hutchins Heberle Award and Lecture with Professor Amanda Anderson of Brown University:\n\nSome of the most influential frameworks for understanding human thought -- in psychology\, in moral and political philosophy\, and in cognitive science -- have failed to recognize the quality\, form\, and significance of slow\, persistent ruminative processes oriented toward experiences of moral shock or disturbance. Such experiences include but are not limited to profound loss\, grief\, regret\, or injury\, including those fundamental assaults on dignity we might designate as status-injury. Drawing on examples from the literary tradition\, I demonstrate that rumination is a productive moral process and not merely a psychological symptom of oversensitivity or trauma endured. \n\nAbout the speaker:\nAmanda Anderson joined the Brown faculty in 2012 as the Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Humanities and English. She served as Director of the Cogut Institute for the Humanities from 2015-2026. Her research focuses on broad questions of intellectual history\, disciplinary formation\, and the relations among literature\, moral life\, and politics. She served as host of the podcast Meeting Street from 2020-2023. \n\nHer books include Rumination in Life and Literature: A Vindication (forthcoming University of Chicago Press\, 2027)\, Humanities Theory (with Simon During\, Oxford\, 2025)\, Character: Three Inquiries in Literary Study (with Rita Felski and Toril Moi\, Chicago\, 2019)\, Psyche and Ethos: Moral Life After Psychology (Clarendon Lectures in English Literature) (Oxford\, 2018)\, Bleak Liberalism (Chicago\, 2016)\, The Way We Argue Now: A Study in the Cultures of Theory (Princeton\, 2006)\, The Powers of Distance: Cosmopolitanism and the Cultivation of Detachment (Princeton\, 2001)\, and Tainted Souls and Painted Faces: The Rhetoric of Fallenness in Victorian Culture (Cornell\, 1993).  She is co-editor of George Eliot: A Companion (Wiley-Blackwell\, 2013) and Disciplinarity at the Fin de Siècle (Princeton\, 2002). \n\nFrom 2008-2014\, she served as the director of the School of Criticism and Theory\, an interdisciplinary summer institute hosted by Cornell University. She serves on the boards of the School of Criticism and Theory (as a Honorary Senior Fellow) and the international Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes. Prior to joining the Brown faculty\, she was Caroline Donovan Professor of English Literature at Johns Hopkins University.

DESCRIPTION:You're invited to the 2026 IRWG/Rackham Community of Scholars Symposium! This symposium features interdisciplinary feminist scholarship from the 2026 IRWG/Rackham Community of Scholars fellows. The Community of Scholars is a two-month summer fellowship and the only feminist dissertation-writing workshop at the University of Michigan. It supports graduate students enrolled in any Rackham program on the Ann Arbor campus who are conducting scholarly or creative work related to women\, gender\, or sexuality.Community of Scholars participates in a weekly seminar throughout May and June. Faculty in the Women’s & Gender Studies Department facilitate these sessions\, which emphasize peer review and cross-disciplinary exchange. Facilitators offer mentorship\, individualized feedback\, and guidance on writing from a feminist perspective.The fellows reconvene for the annual Community of Scholars Symposium to share the product of their summer’s work with each other and a broader audience.

DESCRIPTION:Guest artist Sean Chen (University of Missouri Kansas City) will give a master class to talented piano students from the University of Michigan School of Music\, Theatre and Dance. Free and open to the public.\n\nABOUT THE GUEST ARTIST\n\nA “thoughtful musician well beyond his years” (*The Republic*)\, pianist SEAN CHEN shares his “alluring\, colorfully shaded renditions” (*New York Times*) and “genuinely sensitive” (*LA Times*) playing with audiences around the world in solo and chamber recitals\, concerto performances\, and masterclasses\, after having won the 2013 American Piano Awards\, placing third at the 2013 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition\, and being named a 2015 Annenberg Fellow. Mr. Chen is the Jack Strandberg/Missouri Endowed Chair Associate Professor of Piano at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory.\n\nMr. Chen has performed with many prominent orchestras\, including the Fort Worth\, Indianapolis\, Kansas City\, San Diego\, Knoxville\, Hartford\, Louisiana Philharmonic\, Milwaukee\, North Carolina\, Pasadena\, Phoenix\, Santa Fe\, and New West Symphony Orchestras\, as well as the Chamber Orchestras of Philadelphia\, Indianapolis\, and South Bay. He has collaborated with such esteemed conductors as Leonard Slatkin\, Michael Stern\, Gerard Schwarz\, Nicholas McGegan\, Miguel Harth-Bedoya\, Marcelo Lehninger\, and James Judd. Solo recitals have brought him to major venues worldwide\, including Jordan Hall in Boston\, Subculture in New York City\, the American Art Museum at the Smithsonian in Washington\, D.C.\, the National Concert Hall in Taipei\, Het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam\, and the Salle Cortot in Paris.\n\nMr. Chen has served on the juries of notable piano competitions\, including PianoArts\, American Piano Awards\, Cliburn Junior\, Thailand International Piano Competition\, West Virginia International Piano Competition\, Cleveland International Piano Competition for Young Artists\, and Steinway competitions around the country. Mr. Chen has also contributed to the catalog of Steinway’s new Spirio system.\n\nA multifaceted musician\, Mr. Chen also transcribes\, composes\, and improvises. He recently premiered his own *Daydream No. 2 - Flight* at the Singapore International Piano Festival. *Daydream No. 1 - Steps* (2021)\, was commissioned as a gift for the retirement of American Piano Award's former President/CEO. His other transcriptions\, including Ysaÿe's Violin Sonata No. 3 for two pianos\, commissioned by 88Squared duo\, and such orchestral works as Ravel’s *La Valse*\, Dukas's *L'apprenti sorcier*\, Mozart’s Overture to *The Marriage of Figaro*\, and the Adagio from Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2\, have been received with glowing acclaim and enthusiasm. Mr. Chen's encore improvisations are lauded as “genuinely brilliant” (*Dallas Morning News*). An advocate of new music\, Mr. Chen has also collaborated with several composers and performed their works\, including Lisa Bielawa\, Jennifer Higdon\, Michael Williams\, Nicco Athens\, Michael Gilbertson\, and Reinaldo Moya.\n\nBorn in Florida\, Mr. Chen grew up in the Los Angeles area of Oak Park\, California. His impressive achievements before college include the NFAA ARTSweek\, Los Angeles Music Center’s Spotlight\, and 2006 Presidential Scholars awards. These honors combined with diligent schoolwork facilitated offers of acceptance by MIT\, Harvard\, and the Juilliard School. Choosing to study music\, Mr. Chen earned his Bachelor and Master of Music from Juilliard\, meanwhile garnering several awards\, most notably the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans. He received his Artist Diploma in 2014 at the Yale School of Music as a George W. Miles Fellow. His teachers include Hung-Kuan Chen\, Edward Francis\, Jerome Lowenthal\, and Matti Raekallio.\n\nMr. Chen resides in the suburbs of Kansas City with his wife\, Betty\, a violinist in the Kansas City Symphony\, and their daughters Ella and Maeve.
