SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:Virtual College Possible Chicago AmeriCorps Information Session
DESCRIPTION:College Possible Chicago is looking for full time AmeriCorps Coaches to commit to a year of service from August 2023 - June 2024. As a college access and success nonprofit\, we serve 1600 students across Chicago and aim to increase that number each year. We serve students from their junior year of high school through their college graduation\, supporting them with our near peer coaching model that pairs recent college graduates with Chicago students. As a Coach\, you will serve a diverse cohort of Chicago Public School students\, many of whom are the first in their family to go to college\, by sharing your experiences and advice. As recent college graduates\, AmeriCorps Coaches are familiar with the higher education system and College Possible equips them with the curriculum and tools they need to share their knowledge with others. \n\nIn this information session you will hear an overview of College Possible\, the responsibilities of AmeriCorps Coaches and the benefits of service. We will have plenty of time for any questions that you may have about the role and our organization. The position is open to graduates of any major and with any career aspirations. Being a Coach provides tangible skills and experience that you can take with you on all of your future endeavors. Sign up today to learn more about the post-graduation opportunities that we have for you!\n\nJoin us onTuesday\, March 21\, from 2 - 3pm central time\, on Zoom. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Aerospace Chairs Distinguished Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Ben Jorns\, Ph.D.\nDepartment of Aerospace Engineering\,University of Michigan\n\nIn FXB or on Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/s/98754209693\n\nAbstract:\n \nHigh power electric propulsion (EP) thrusters are an enabling technology for space mobility. The high specific impulse of these systems translates to substantial savings in cost and launch mass when compared to spacecraft that employ traditional chemical rockets. While these advantages have already led to the widespread use of EP for commercial applications in GEO\, there is growing interest in applying this technology for both defense and deep space exploration. This demand is driving the need for a new generation of EP. Key capabilities of interest include operating at 10-100 x higher power than conventional system\, generating a factor of ten faster acceleration\, expanding lifetimes by an order of magnitude\, and operating on non-traditional propellants such as air\, combustion products\, and metals. This talk provides on an overview of analytical and experimental work at the University of Michigan (UM) to address these challenges. Special attention is given to UM’s work on the H9 MUSCLE\, which recently set a world record for Hall thrust density\, as well as UM’s efforts under JANUS\, a NASA sponsored institute to develop new testing strategies for ultra-high power thrusters.\n\nSpeaker Bio:\n\nDr. Benjamin Jorns is an associate professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan where he co-directs the Plasmadynamics and Electric Propulsion Laboratory. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Michigan\, Dr. Jorns was a member of the electric propulsion group at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena\, California where his work combined experimental and analytical techniques to investigate propulsion systems for the next generation of NASA robotic missions. His primary research interests include wear mechanisms and stability in electric propulsion systems\, turbulence and nonlinear processes in low temperature plasmas\, developing new plasma diagnostics\, and investigating breakthrough forms of in-space propulsion. Dr. Jorns has published over 150 journal articles and conference proceedings in the field\, and he is an associate fellow of the AIAA and member of the IEEE\, APS\, and Electric Rocket Propulsion Society. His work has been recognized with five AIAA best paper awards\, the AFOSR Young Investigator Program award\, the DOE Early Career Award\, the AIAA Sperry Award\, and a number of NASA technical achievement commendations. Dr. Jorns is currently serving as co-director of the Joint Advanced Propulsion Institute (JANUS)\, a five-year strategic technology research institute supported by NASA to investigate testing of high power electric propulsion systems.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Designing “Perfect” Spin Liquids Candidates
DESCRIPTION:Quantum Spin Liquid (QSL) is one of the most astonishing states of matter which was theoretically predicted decades ago. In such a state the spins appear disordered while they form a novel entanglement\, which if harnessed could be used for future technological advancements such as quantum computing. Despite the outpour of activities in pursuit of designing and characterizing perfect QSL candidates\, these experimental efforts have proven challenging. In this talk I will review some of these challenges and discuss our recent efforts to overcome them and provide a deeper understanding for this fascinating state of matter.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Diversity Scholars in Social Media
DESCRIPTION:Scholars are navigating changing spaces embedded in a system that can be slow and resistant to an evolving digital world. They are receiving competing messages about how and when to develop a digital brand and engage on social media. This session will explore how scholars\, particularly those conducting diversity or anti-racism scholarship\, are leveraging social media to foster scholarly communities\, disseminate their research and scholarship for social change\, and connect with public audiences. Panelists will also discuss how they have navigated resistance from colleagues in academia\, trolling and bullying on social media\, and reporting their social media engagement in the tenure\, promotion\, and faculty review process. \n\nModerator\nEdmund Graham\, Associate Director of the National Center for Institutional Diversity\n\nConfirmed Panelists\nLaila McCloud\, Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership and Counseling at Grand Valley State University\n\nAireale Rodgers\, postdoctoral fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on the HEAL Project\n\nAntar Tichavakunda\, Assistant Professor of Race and Higher Education at the University of California\, Santa Barbara
