SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Commutative Algebra: Showing F-purity and F-regularity through examples
DESCRIPTION:Tight closure\, introduced by Hochster and Huneke\, has proved to be an effective tool in studying classical ring properties and opened many directions into attacking problems. F-singularities\, a.k.a. tight closure properties (to algebraists\, at least)\, then become popular ring properties that researchers want to show for special classes of rings and algebras. In this talk\, I will introduce several ways to show two of those\, F-purity and F-regularity\, through many examples.\n\nThe talk will be virtual\, but we will have a watch party in our usual room. If you would like the zoom info to attend virtually instead\, email an organizer or join our mailing list.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Aiton Lecture: Rethinking the Aztecs: Have we been wrong for 500 years?
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Professor Camilla Townsend\, author of \"Fifth Sun: A New History of the Aztecs\,\" will address what we can learn from Nahuatl-language sources produced in the sixteenth century if we open ourselves to everything they have to teach us. She will also discuss what she believes are the reasons we have tended to be resistant to their messages\, even in recent times.\n\nCamilla Townsend is Board of Governors Distinguished Professor of History at Rutgers University\, New Brunswick. She is the author of numerous books on Indigenous history\, among them \"Pocahontas and the Powhatan Dilemma\" (2004)\, \"Malintzin’s Choices: An Indian Woman in the Conquest of Mexico\" (2006)\, and \"Fifth Sun: A New History of the Aztecs\" (2019)\, which won the 2020 Cundill Prize in History. Her research has been supported by such entities as the American Philosophical Society\, the National Endowment for the Humanities\, and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.\n\nThis lecture will take place in person in 1014 Tisch Hall on Tuesday\, March 21 at 4:00 pm.

SUMMARY:Other:Non-Covalent Approaches to Asymmetric Catalysis with Free Radicals
DESCRIPTION:The applications of free radical intermediates in organic synthesis have expanded significantly in recent years. However\, catalytic strategies that enable control of enantioselectivity in radical reactions remain rare. In this lecture\, I will describe three recent projects that all make use of attractive non-covalent associations between free radicals (or radical ions) and chiral catalysts as a basis for stereocontrol. Mechanistic and computational efforts to elucidate the precise radical-molecule interactions responsible for asymmetric induction will be presented. \n \n \nRobert Knowles (Princeton University)
