SUMMARY:Exhibition:To Be Heard: \"Pressed Against My Own Glass\" Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:To Be Heard at the University of Michigan is a public mural project and exhibition by Brooklyn-based street artist\, painter\, and activist Tatyana Fazlalizadeh. \n\nThe exhibition* Pressed Against My Own Glass* will be installed in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery. In this multimedia installation on Black womanhood within the home space\, Fazlalizadeh explores her childhood and adulthood within the domestic space and how it connects to the experiences of other Black women and those who had a girlhood. Using paintings\, drawings\, video\, and reappropriated home objects\, she examines her experiences of joy\, rest\, sadness\, and fellowship in the home. While doing so\, she makes connections to her Black women peers\, even those like Breonna Taylor and Atatiana Jefferson who show how racist violence is a threat to Black women even in their homes.\n\nAbout the Public Mural Project:\n\n*To Be Heard*\, public mural project\, September 28-October 16\, 2022. Locations: Angell Hall\, Trotter Multicultural Center\, Modern Languages Building\, Shapiro Library.\n\nThe public mural component utilizes community engagement\, public art\, and social practice to listen to and amplify the voices of marginalized groups\, particularly women and non-white students at the University of Michigan. Through class workshops and interviews\, Fazlalizadeh will engage with Black and brown\, queer\, and women-identified students on the ways that they experience race and gender on campus\, exploring how students are treated based on their identities. The engagement will culminate in public art installation across campus using drawings and photos to present the experiences and stories from these students back to the public.

ALL ARE WELCOME!\n\nSeptember 9 - October 14\, 2022\n\nHere Nor There is a new solo exhibition by multidisciplinary artist and environmentalist Kristina Sheufelt. Sheufelt is based in Detroit\, Michigan\, and recently received her MFA from the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. In Here Nor There\, Sheufelt uses a variety of media to blur the lines between land and body. \n\nFor the past several years\, Sheufelt has spent her summers living in remote backcountry locations throughout the United States working on research projects ranging from self-directed study of emotional psychology in the wilderness to monitoring marine wildlife populations. In Here Nor There\, Sheufelt processes the emotional and ecological implications of returning to life in the city between reunions with the wild.\n\n\nKristina Sheufelt received her BFA from the College for Creative Studies in 2013 and her MFA from the University of Michigan in 2022.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Predictive analysis and deep learning of functional MRI in Alzheimer's disease
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nAlzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia pose a significant burden to individuals and public health. AD is expected to grow in prevalence in the coming decades due to the aging population. Brain atrophy is a major component of AD pathology and can occur before symptoms of cognitive impairment. However\, pathological brain atrophy and symptoms of cognitive impairment may be a result of many years of disease impacts. Evidence supports the need for early detection of impacted neurocircuitry to foresee future progression to advanced stages of AD and develop treatments. This dissertation examines predictive modeling and deep learning methods to identify brain-behavior relationships and learn low-dimensional representations of brain activity from MR imaging data. The dissertation and methods are separated into four parts.  \n\nPart one of this work examines multivariate analysis approaches applied to functional connectivity from subjects with an early clinical phenotype of AD\, mild cognitive impairment (MCI). A regression framework using partial least squares and feature selection demonstrated significant brain-behavior relationships with measures of cognition and memory. The results also confirm other findings that ecologically relevant task-based connectivity serves as a ``stress-test\" for memory-related deficits such as those observed in MCI. This approach elucidated brain regions that may be implicated in MCI and warrant future study (superior temporal gyrus\, inferior parietal lobule\, and superior frontal gyrus). Part two extends the multivariate analyses studied in part one to an additional brain imaging modality\, arterial spin labeling (ASL). Cerebral blood flow (CBF) as measured by ASL demonstrated brain-behavior relationships with composite measures of memory and learning in a cohort along the spectrum of AD\, demonstrating that CBF data warrant further investigation as a predictor in this application.\n\nParts three and four utilize a variational autoencoder (VAE) model\, a deep learning approach to encode latent representations that aim to disentangle sources of fMRI signal. A surface-based VAE trained on only healthy controls is shown to be generalizable to patients with known AD pathology. The results maintained individual separation and high input/decoder output spatial reconstruction correlation of r=0.8 across all three groups. Part four extended the surface-based model used in part three to a volumetric fMRI approach. Similarly to the surface-based model\, high reconstruction accuracy (NRMSE=0.68) and temporal correlation (r=0.8) between input and decoder output are demonstrated. This approach is more readily applicable to 3D fMRI data as compared to the surface-based model. \n\nIn summary\, this work has proposed and developed multivariate and deep learning analysis techniques for brain imaging data in the context of AD with the ultimate goal of improving detection and intervention for early pathological changes in the brain.\n\nZoom Link: https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJIpcOigrjIsHtJq_xJ1aboK1T0PdWpTkBP5\n*Registration Required\n\nCommittee Chair(s):\nDr. Scott J. SUMMARY:Presentation:Developmental Brown Bag: Children's and adults' understanding and learning about genetic inheritance
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Genetic inheritance is a fundamental concept in biology\, as it is the mechanism for the transmission of traits. Therefore\, understanding genetic inheritance is pivotal for science education and biological reasoning. Prior work on children’s understanding of genetic inheritance suggests that children initially have a “mother bias” such that\, if parents have different traits\, children think that offspring will have the same trait as the mother rather than the father. However\, this pattern might be due to prior work only allowing children to select one possible offspring. In this presentation\, I will present two novel tasks to assess children's and adults' beliefs about inheritance. Using these tasks\, I show that even 4-year-old children have a more sophisticated understanding of inheritance than previously believed\, and that this understanding is constrained by different biases than those identified in prior work. I will also show how these biases are present for different traits and animals\, are resistant to instruction\, and persevere into adulthood. These new insights inform our understanding of children's biological reasoning and can be used to design new genetics lessons.
