SUMMARY:Exhibition:Victors for Art: Michigan's Alumni Collectors–Part I: Figuration
DESCRIPTION:Commemorating the University of Michigan’s 2017 Bicentennial\, Victors for Art: Michigan’s Alumni Collectors celebrates the deep impact of Michigan alumni in the global art world. This two-part exhibition (Part I: Figuration followed by Part II: Abstraction on view July 1– October 29) presents works collected by a diverse group of alumni that represent the breadth of the University and over seventy years of graduating classes. The works themselves are equally diverse\, ranging from ancient sculptures to contemporary multimedia works. Part I: Figuration features works by Henri Matisse\, Elizabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun\, Mark Tansey\, and Mickalene Thomas\, among others\, and allows visitors to explore the variety of artistic responses and purposes encompassed by the term “figuration”. It also offers an unprecedented opportunity to view art that may have never been publicly displayed otherwise—and most certainly\, not all together. For visitors\, and especially for future Michigan alumni\, Victors for Art illuminates the shared passion for art fostered by the Michigan experience.\n\nThis exhibition was organized by Joseph Rosa\, Guest Curator\, in collaboration with Laura De Becker\, Helmut & Candis Stern Associate Curator of African Art\, Jennifer Friess\, Assistant Curator of Photography\, Lehti Mairike Keelman\, Assistant Curator of Western Art\, and Natsu Oyobe\, Curator of Asian Art.\n\nLead support for Victors for the Arts: Michigan's Alumni Collectors is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the University of Michigan Health System\, the University of Michigan Office of the President\, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the University of Michigan Bicentennial Office.

SUMMARY:Performance:Mouths of Babes
DESCRIPTION:With more than a dozen albums and over a thousand shows between them\, Ty Greenstein and Ingrid Elizabeth of Mouths of Babes are no strangers to the modern folk music scene. For years\, their respective bands Girlyman and Coyote Grace captivated thousands of loyal fans as they crisscrossed the country\, rocked festival main stages\, and toured with the likes of the Indigo Girls and Dar Williams. Now\, as Mouths of Babes\, Ty and Ingrid have distilled the very best of the songwriting\, humor\, and musicianship of their previous groups into a new power duo whose key is contrast. Rarely is a sound or a show as balanced as it is with these two\, and the differences in both their songwriting styles and personal presentation makes for an unusually satisfying yin and yang. The Chicago Tribune writes: \"They offer unique counterpoints to one another … the laidback Ty\, nattily dressed in a tie and crisp suit jacket\, has a rich\, lovely alto. Ingrid\, clad in a sultry pink satin mini-dress\, is a sassy chanteuse with a lilting soprano. Trading jokes and sharing elegant harmonies\, the two women display an intuitive professional bond.\" They easily switch off lead vocals and play a wide array of instruments\, with Ty on acoustic and electric guitars\, banjo\, and foot percussion\, and Ingrid playing upright bass\, ukulele\, and cajón. Mouths of Babes come to Michigan with a new release\, \"Brighter in the Dark.\"

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Blossom by Blossom: Elvish Ceramics
DESCRIPTION:Gabrielle Soltis creates works from the Gyldenstjerne Porcelain Company lineage. The story goes that sometime in the early 1700s\, a young Danish nobleman by the name of Einar Gyldenstjerne fell in love and married an Elvish woman named Gwyneira (surname unknown) who shared the family recipe for how to create hard-paste porcelain. The first items produced by the company are dated to 1715. Soltis’ porcelain flowers in this tradition are assembled meticulously petal by petal. She studied ceramics at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit\, Michigan and is interested in European history and fiction.
