SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Between Asante and the Whiteman: Fante and Ga Pressmen and the Racialization of Ethnicity in Gold Coast Newspapers
DESCRIPTION:With the “Hear\, Here” series\, we aim to facilitate conversations around new research in the humanities. Faculty fellows at the Institute for the Humanities will discuss a part of their current project in a short talk followed by a Q & A session.\n\nAbout this talk:\nThis talk illuminates the contradictory racial politics of late nineteenth-century African-owned newspapers by analyzing how Fante and Ga pressmen\, who positioned themselves as African defenders of African interests\, deployed racist depictions of the Asante empire in an effort to solicit British protection. This Faustian bargain backfired and when British protection led to colonial conquest\, these same newspapers mobilized race as the primary language of political dissent against British rule.\n\nCarina Ray is a 2026-27 Helmut F. Stern Faculty Fellow at the Institute for the Humanities and Associate Professor\, History.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Precise Connected Automated Vehicle Motion Planning with V2I Passive System: Real-Time Vehicle Deployment and Field Evaluation
DESCRIPTION:This talk will present how pavement-encoded electromagnetic (EM) strips can provide real-time lateral-offset updates that improve closed-loop automated vehicle tracking. The analysis focuses on lateral tracking accuracy\, run-to-run repeatability\, and vehicle-control response on tangent and curved roadway sections. A real-time framework has been developed to detect pavement-encoded EM strips and estimate lateral offset using an onboard magnetometer array. EM estimates were integrated with GPS-based lateral control through event-triggered source switching. Fifty field runs over 36 strip locations yielded 1\,800 run-strip observations for lateral control performance analysis. A linear 10 mixed-effects model was derived that included localization condition\, roadway section\, and their interaction as fixed effects\, with random intercepts for run and strip. Repeatability was assessed using across-run variability and normalized FastDTW distances between lateral-offset profiles.\n---\nAbout the speakers:\nDr. Jeffery Roesler has been conducting research on a variety of transportation infrastructure topics for the past 25 years. His recent research interest involves passive material sensing for vehicle lateral positioning and construction work zone V2I communication\, micro-scale urban heat island and cool surfaces\, roller compacted concrete pavements\, 3D concrete printing for 1-story structures\, and non-contact ultrasonic sensing system for construction monitoring. He has authored/ co-authored more than 275 publications. He is a registered professional engineer in the California and active participant in TRB\, ACI\, and is Past President of the International Society of Concrete Pavements. Dr. Roesler teaches courses in transportation infrastructure\, specifically pavement analysis and design\, concrete materials\, introduction to transportation engineering\, geometric design of roads as well as a senior professional practice class and a first year project-based introduction to CEE course.\n\nDr. Talebpour is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has more than 12 years of experience in teaching\, research\, and consulting in vehicle automation\, connected transportation system\, traffic analysis\, and traffic flow theory. He was leading Texas A&M’s team in SAE/GM AutoDrive Challenge (before joining UIUC)\, a four-year competition to develop a fully (level 4) autonomous vehicle among eight Universities. He is currently leading an FHWA-funded project focusing on trajectory data collection from CAV operations in highway and arterial environments\, “Third Generation Simulation Data (TGSIM)”. He has been working on developing algorithms for vehicle safety and efficiency in a connected and automated driving environment and has developed simulation tools to simultaneously simulate wireless communications and drivers and automated vehicles.

SUMMARY:Performance:Eva Albalghiti\, carillon
DESCRIPTION:Eva Albalghiti performs on the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Carillon\, an instrument of 60 bells with the lowest bell (bourdon) weighing 6 tons.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Lurie Carillon every weekday that classes are in session. During these recitals\, visitors may take the elevator to level 2 to view the largest bells\, or to level 3 to see the carillonist performing. (Visitors subject to acrophobia are recommended to visit level 2 only.) An optional spiral stairway between levels 2 and 3 allows for up-close views of some of the largest bells.
