Halaloween screens horror films from across the globe that were made by\, for\, or about Muslims to understand: “What scares Muslim audiences? Are horror movies halal?”\n\nThis year’s Halaloween 2026 film festival is a retrospective that brings back some of our Michigan community’s favorite Muslim horror films from the past few years. As usual\, the festival runs throughout October with a different movie screening and/or event every week. In addition to local theater screenings\, we are bringing you three community collaborations this year: with the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn\, with Michigan Medicine and the U-M Medical School\, and with the Brooklyn Detroit venue in Corktown!\n\nThe 2026 lineup: Halaloween starts off at the Arab American National Museum (AANM) in Dearborn on Thursday\, October 8\, with a screening of the Saudi found-footage film Madayen (2016). SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Visualizing Care: Storytelling as Data Visualization at MohenjoDaro
DESCRIPTION:Set in the World Heritage Site of MohenjoDaro (Sindh\, Pakistan)\, Visualizing Care approaches archaeological data visualization through deep mapping. Experimenting with multimodal and accessible forms of archaeological data presentation\, this study explores how care through time can be documented. Within an archaeological context\, the materiality of care can be seen through the intentional making/unmaking of urban design\, architectural features\, and infrastructure. Within a historical and contemporary framework\, care can be visualized through conservation and the relationships between caretakers and the site itself\, drawing attention to the affective aspects of archaeological research. This transdisciplinary project utilizes archival material\, LiDAR and 3-dimensional artifact captures\, ethnographic conversations\, GIS mapping\, sound\, and experiments with mudbrick\, to explore the many different ways of knowing the ancient city of MohenjoDaro.\n\n\nUzma Z. Rizvi is Professor of Anthropology and Urban Studies\, in the Department of Social Science and Cultural Studies\, Pratt Institute\, Brooklyn\, NY. She is also a visiting faculty at Shah Abdul Latif University in Khairpur\, Pakistan. Dr. Rizvi’s work intentionally interweaves archaeology with cultural criticism\, philosophy\, critical theory\, art\, and design. With over two decades of work on decolonizing methodologies\, intersectional and feminist strategies\, and transdisciplinary approaches\, her work has intentionally pushed disciplinary limits\, and demanded ethical decolonial praxis at all levels of engagement\, from teaching to research. She is the PI of the Laboratory for Integrated Archaeological Visualization and Heritage (liavh.org)\, currently working at the 3rd millennium BCE world heritage site of MohenjoDaro\, Pakistan.\n\nThe lecture begins at 4PM EST\, in person at the Kelsey Museum (Room 125). Reception to follow at 5:30PM. \n\nIf you are unable to attend in person\, you may view the lecture via zoom by registering here: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Kai9ybzNSoGPYxwjs6lAyQ#/registration

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Whose City? Street Art and the Performance of Belonging in Tbilisi\, Georgia
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Vandenberg Room (2nd floor) at the Michigan League for a presentation by Greta Uehling\, a 2025-26 Faculty Fellow with the Center for World Performance Studies (CWPS).\n\nStreet art is often understood as a form of cultural resistance in politically constrained societies like Georgia. Professor Greta Uehling will draw on ethnographic fieldwork in Tbilisi\, including interviews with artists\, activists\, and viewers supported to explore the forces that complicate its communicative potential. Uehling extends a Barthian approach that foregrounds the reception of street art and the contested meanings that emerge around it. In this talk\, she will explore the state’s appropriation of street-art aesthetics through government-sponsored projects\, as well as private citizens’ power to veto murals on their buildings. She will then turn to gender as a contested terrain where Georgia’s European aspirations meet enduring social norms. This research was supported by a Faculty Fellowship from the Center for World Performance Studies.\n\nPresented by the Center for World Performance Studies with support from the Center for Russian\, East European\, and Eurasian Studies.\n\nFACULTY BIO\n\nGreta Uehling’s scholarship is broadly concerned with international migration and forced displacement. Major projects have examined the experiences of refugees\, asylum seekers\, and the internally displaced. Her current project explores the subjective experience of military conflict and forced displacement in Ukraine. Based on ethnographic fieldwork\, she documents how the military conflict reconfigured social worlds and how these social worlds became the site of a different\, everyday kind of war.\n\nPrior to teaching in the Program on International and Comparatives Studies\, Uehling consulted with a number of international organizations including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees\, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe\, and the Watson Institute at Brown University.\n\nUehling holds a PhD in cultural anthropology from the University of Michigan. In 2004\, she completed a post-doctoral fellowship with the Solomon Asch Center for the Study of Ethnopolitical Conflict at the University of Pennsylvania. Her first book is *Beyond Memory: The Deportation and Repatriation of the Crimean Tatars*. Her forthcoming book is *Everyday War: The Conflict over Donbas\, Ukraine*. She is also the author of numerous scholarly articles and book chapters.\n\nExpert Advisory: Dr. Uehling is an expert on Ukraine and can discuss the war in Ukraine and its implications.\n\n*If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to participate in this event\, please contact the Center for World Performance Studies at cwps.information@umich.edu at least one week in advance of this event. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.*
