SUMMARY:Well-being:VIRTUAL | CEW+Inspire Midweek Mindfulness-Guided Sit
DESCRIPTION:As part of the CEW+Inspire initiative\, CEW+ holds mindful meditation sits virtually on Wednesdays at 12:15.\n\nRSVP here to receive the Zoom link: https://myumi.ch/r8zv7\n\nMindfulness Meditation is a skill that can be learned and when practiced has the power to enhance a sense of wellbeing\, focus\, and interconnectedness. As we all continue to navigate uncertainty and challenges that are inherent in the act of being human\, we benefit from and are grateful for diverse cultures and traditions across the globe. Collectively they have passed on a wide variety of contemplative practices that encourage reflection\, silence\, and centering into the present moment to help us cope and better respond. Engaging in contemplative practices support the individual\, by cultivating a sense of awareness and well-being\, and benefit society by enhancing one’s capacity to create connection and community\, and to become an agent of positive social change. There are many forms of contemplative practices\, including meditation. Mindfulness meditation is one form aimed to help focus our awareness on the present moment as it unfolds\, moment to moment\, without judgment. Research on mindfulness continues to find a wide range of benefits. In short\, Mindfulness may be viewed as cognitive training that bolsters our ability to handle stress\, poor mood\, and threat. It also increases our capacity to focus our attention on what is most important to us and to be more compassionate to ourselves and to others.\n\nOn Wednesdays from 12:15 - 12:45 pm\, we come together in community to practice this skill in an open and supportive virtual space. Whether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. Join this supportive community and experience the gift of present moment awareness.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Qualitative Methods: Overview and Semi-Structured Interviewing - Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques
DESCRIPTION:Qualitative Methods: Overview and Semi-Structured Interviewing\n\nOpen for registration!\n\nJune 20-30\, 2022\n1:00pm-3:00pm EST\nM-F\n\nThis course will focus on semi-structured\, or in-depth\, interviewing\, with a brief introduction to other qualitative methods\, including observation. Semi-structured interviewing is often most helpful in understanding complex social processes. We will examine the goals\, assumptions\, process\, and uses of interviewing and compare these methods to other related qualitative and quantitative methods in order to develop research designs appropriate to research goals. The course will cover all aspects of interviewing\, including how to decide who to interview\, how to ask good interview questions\, and how to conduct successful interviews. Students will conduct interviews\, and discuss the process and outcome of those interviews. We will examine the strengths and weaknesses of this methodology\, particularly through discussion of some of the critiques of these methods.\n\nCourse Hour: 1.5\n\nInstructor: Nancy Riley\n\nAll 2022 courses will be offered in an alternative remote format.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Webinar: Drone the SWMP: Assessing the Utility of Drones for Monitoring Coastal Wetlands
DESCRIPTION:Tidal wetland monitoring is critical for detecting changes and managing these vulnerable coastal ecosystems. Wetland monitoring programs typically use ground-based measurements or satellite observations to track changes at small and large scales – but these approaches may miss important processes that occur at intermediate spatial scales or result from discrete events such as extreme storms. Mounting sensors on unmanned aerial systems (UAS) - commonly known as drones - offers an opportunity to radically improve tidal wetland monitoring programs by providing high spatial resolution\, coverage\, and customization on the operator’s schedule.\n\nThis project team worked with the six National Estuarine Research Reserves in the Southeast and Caribbean to develop\, assess\, and collaboratively refine a protocol for drone operation\, data management\, and data analysis. In this webinar\, which will consist of a presentation and panel discussion\, members of the project team will talk about their approach which included ground-based validation and drone-based observation to estimate common wetland monitoring parameters and a collaborative process for developing the protocols. They will also share lessons learned\, products developed\, and benefits that have emerged from this work.
