SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Colloquium: Intrinsic dual symplectic dynamics in quasiperiodic spectral theory
DESCRIPTION:Quasiperiodic Schrödinger operators are simple deterministic models of quantum motion that nevertheless exhibit strikingly complicated behavior: fractal spectra\, metal–insulator transitions\, and an unexpected sharp sensitivity to arithmetic properties of parameters. The central example is the almost Mathieu operator\, whose study led to celebrated results such as the Ten Martini problem. But that model is highly special\,  and for a long time it was unclear whether these phenomena reflected genuine universality or exceptional symmetry.\n\nI will discuss recent work showing that these spectral phenomena are robust and universal in a natural class. The key new insight is that one can uncover intrinsic low-dimensional symplectic dynamics hidden inside the problem\, even when the standard dual cocycle formalism is no longer available. This leads to robust results on sharp arithmetic spectral transitions and the Ten Martini problem.\n\nThe talk will be aimed at a broad audience and will focus on the ideas and the emerging conceptual picture.

DESCRIPTION:“Genetics of Blood Clotting: From Bedside to Bench and Back Again”\n\nThis lecture will review research conducted by David Ginsburg's lab\, particularly focusing on the connection between studies of human diseases (the bedside) and basic laboratory research (the bench). The Ginsburg lab has a longstanding interest in the genetics of inherited bleeding and blood clotting disorders and the structure and function of blood coagulation proteins\, including von Willebrand factor (von Willebrand disease)\, ADAMTS13 (Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP))\, and PAI-1 (PAI-1 deficiency). Our discovery of the molecular basis for combined deficiency of blood clotting factors V and VIII took us from the “bedside” to the “bench” to further explore the regulation of protein transport from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi\, leading to new insights into the pathogenesis of heart and blood diseases\, including the control of cholesterol levels.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In this talk\, we introduce \"UniLasso\" -- a novel statistical method for sparse regression. This two-stage approach preserves the signs of the univariate coefficients and leverages their magnitude. Both of these properties are attractive for stability and interpretation of the model. Through comprehensive simulations and applications to real-world datasets\, we demonstrate that UniLasso outperforms Lasso in various settings\, particularly in terms of sparsity and model interpretability. Extensions to generalized linear models (GLMs) and Cox regression are also discussed.\n\nThis is joint work with Sourav Chatterjee and Rob Tibshirani.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Synthesis\, Structure and Applications of Highly Microporous Organic Materials
DESCRIPTION:Porous organic polymers represent a rare class of materials that combine high internal surface area with broad-spectrum chemical stability. These features make them attractive for applications where surface-guest interactions and durability dictate performance\, including corrosive gas storage\, water purification\, energy storage\, and catalysis. In many cases\, performance can be improved by fine-tuning bulk microporosity\, yet factors affecting this key property remain poorly understood. This seminar describes efforts to identify how synthetic pathways shape microporosity in amorphous porous networks. Using a network disassembly approach\, we show that pathway-dependent porosity is largely driven by defects arising from incomplete cross-linking. Implications for synthetic design and selected biomedical applications of highly microporous organic polymers will also be discussed.

DESCRIPTION:Composer Johanny Navarro and librettist Marcus Yi present a guest artist master class\, kicking off their week-long residency with SMTD OperaLab and Voice & Opera\, in preparation for the orchestral workshop production of Navarro and Yi's new comic opera\, *Working for the Macbeths*. In this master class\, the composer/librettist team will work with several cast members on scenes from the opera and engage in a Q&A session. \n\nThis event is free and open to the public with generous support from the Sally Fleming Master Class Series.  \n\n*Working for the Macbeths* will have two performances\, at 7:30 pm on April 10 and 11 in McIntosh Theatre\, with Jayce Ogren conducting and Chía Patiño directing.\n\nABOUT THE GUEST ARTISTS\n\nPuerto Rican-born composer JOHANNY NAVARRO creates music inspired by Afro-Caribbean aesthetics\, blending vibrant rhythms with contemporary forms. Her works span opera\, orchestral\, and chamber music\, with commissions from the Multicultural Music Group\, Inc.\, Boston Opera Collaborative\, The Victory Players\, American Harp Society\, Inc.\, and Emory University Symphony Orchestra. DESCRIPTION:In his book *Conscience Incorporated: Pursuing Profits while Protecting Human Rights* https://myumi.ch/JPnR4\, Michael Posner examines the evolving role of large multinational companies in addressing human rights challenges tied to their business models\, in global supply chains\, in the tech sector and among investors. In the first part of this talk he will reflect on these topics. Posner also will address the crisis in democracy in the United States and in many parts of the world. Today societies are increasingly polarized\, fueled in part by social media and now artificial intelligence.
