SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CCMB/DCMB Weekly Bioinformatics Seminar Series featuring Lindsey Muir\, PhD (Research Assistant Prof. of Computational Medicine & Bioinformatics)
DESCRIPTION:Development of cell reprogramming methods is hindered by low efficiency and the challenge of analyzing rare cells that have yet unknown phenotypes. While cells in a typical biosample can be identified using unbiased single-cell transcriptomics\, annotation itself relies on known gene expression signatures. Cells that begin to reprogram within a larger population remain indiscernible using this approach. Work in this area illuminates the unknowns related to our understanding of cell identity and heterogeneity. I will discuss our recent work\, including direct cell reprogramming to human hematopoietic stem cells\, future directions\, and key barriers to discovery in the field.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:How Wonderful A Good Map Is: How I Came To Chart The Wolverine
DESCRIPTION:Artist Elaine S. Wilson will describe her ongoing project\, Charting the Wolverine\, from its inception in 2008 to its current state with 31 “map-prints” and over 240 watercolors created. She'll describe her research of historic atlases and maps and her adventures on the back roads of Michigan and Indiana along the railroad tracks making watercolors and drawings. Join us in the Clark Library or via Zoom (https://myumi.ch/2jjkZ).\n\nCharting the Wolverine is a series of digital prints about what you see when you ride Amtrak's Wolverine train from Ann Arbor\, MI to Chicago.\n\nThis event is made possible through the Dr. Bernard Sivak Memorial Fund.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Policy Gradient Flow for Stochastic Control
DESCRIPTION:Reinforcement learning has achieved remarkable success in landmark applications such as AlphaGo and AlphaFold\, and is increasingly expected to play a central role in emerging domains such as autonomous driving. A substantial body of work has established theoretical foundations for classical reinforcement learning algorithms\, including temporal-difference learning\, policy iteration\, and Q-learning. By contrast\, policy gradient descent\, despite its widespread use\, remains less well understood from a theoretical perspective\, largely because of its non-convex structure and the complexity of the underlying functional space. Existing convergence analyses typically require uniform regularity assumptions on the policy\, viewed as a feedback control function\, along the gradient flow\; moreover\, the resulting convergence rates depend on these regularity bounds. In this work\, we significantly strengthen the existing convergence theory. Our key insight is to relate policy gradient descent to a mirror flow on the space of probability measures over controlled trajectories\, where the Bregman divergence is induced by the convex control cost. We rigorously prove a JKO-type convergence result showing that the discrete-time mirror flow converges to its continuous-time counterpart\, and we identify the limiting dynamics as a preconditioned policy gradient descent flow on the space of control processes. Leveraging this mirror-flow perspective\, we establish an exponential convergence rate that is independent of policy regularity. The convergence holds both in Bregman divergence and in the value of the associated control problem.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Probability and Analysis Seminar: Conformal removability and bubble connectivity of non-simple SLE
DESCRIPTION:Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE_\kappa) is a one-parameter family of random fractal curves arising as scaling limits of interfaces in two-dimensional statistical mechanics models. For \kappa \in (4\, 8)\, the SLE_\kappa curve is self-intersecting but not space-filling\, forming complementary connected components known as bubbles. In this talk\, I will discuss the relationship between the conformal removability of SLE traces and connectivity of the bubble adjacency graph\, as well as a sharp phase transition as \kappa varies. Joint work with Zijie Zhuang (UNIGE).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Success Workshop: Dealing with Difficult Research Topics
DESCRIPTION:Research can invite us to engage with complex\, sensitive\, and emotionally demanding topics—including sexual violence\, discrimination\, trauma\, and the experiences of vulnerable or historically marginalized communities. While this work can be meaningful\, it can also affect researchers in ways they may not anticipate. In this interactive\, student-centered workshop\, you’ll explore how to approach difficult research topics with care—for yourself\, your research partners\, and the communities connected to your work. Through reflection\, discussion\, and realistic scenarios\, you’ll learn practical strategies for recognizing emotional strain\, establishing healthy boundaries\, communicating sensitively\, and seeking support when needed. The workshop will also introduce principles for engaging ethically and respectfully with people’s lived experiences while avoiding assumptions\, harm\, or extractive research practices. Whether you are already working with a difficult topic or simply want to be better prepared\, this session will offer a supportive space to ask questions\, build skills\, and identify resources. You do not need to share personal experiences or details about your research to participate.
