SUMMARY:Exhibition:Ernestine Ruben at Willow Run
DESCRIPTION:In 2013\, artist Ernestine Ruben (BSDEs ’53) photographed the once-famed industrial complex Willow Run in Washtenaw County\, Michigan. Designed by her grandfather\, Detroit architect Albert Kahn\, for the Ford Motor Company\, Willow Run was an exemplar of American defense manufacturing because of its efficient mass-production of B-24 Liberators during World War II.\n\nFor this exhibition\, Ruben overlaid interior views of the now-dormant factory with imagined glimpses into her body’s interior landscape. The resulting compositions seem to breathe energy and light into the stagnant and cavernous spaces of Willow Run and suggest a longing for a productive existence undeterred by mortality for both Willow Run and the artist. Her grandfather’s role in the history of the site underscores Ruben’s personal connection.\n\nThe exhibition presents Ruben’s photographs of Willow Run in UMMA’s Photography Gallery and an original film—co-created by Ruben and video artist Seth Bernstein and featuring an original score by award-winning composer Stephen Hartke—in the Museum’s Forum.\n\nLead support for Ernestine Ruben at Willow Run: Mobilizing Memory is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Rafael Lozano-Hemmer
DESCRIPTION:Wavefunction\, Subsculpture 9\, by Mexican-Canadian artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer\, is a kinetic sculpture and interactive installation that plays on the work of mid-century American designers Charles and Ray Eames.\n\nThe installation consists of 42 molded plastic chairs (designed by the Eameses in 1948) arranged in a grid and attached to electromechanical pistons. When visitors approach the chairs\, a surveillance system detects their presence and the closest chairs lift gently off the ground. The adjacent chairs follow\, and a wave movement spreads across the array. The software controlling the pistons is based on fluid dynamics\, so as more visitors approach the grid\, the chairs—whose iconic curving contours were also generated mathematically— mimic the complex interaction of multiple waves in water.\n\nThis performative installation complements the concurrent exhibition Moving Image: Performance\, which together constitute the second of three presentations at UMMA drawn from the collection of Borusan Contemporary\, Istanbul. The works in this year-long trio of exhibitions represent traditional categories such as portraiture\, landscape\, and performance that find new resonance when explored through the strategies of dynamic technology.\n\nLead support for Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: Wavefunction\, Subsculpture 9 is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment and Michigan Engineering. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Latina/o Studies.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Victors for Art: Michigan's Alumni Collectors–Part I: Figuration
DESCRIPTION:Commemorating the University of Michigan’s 2017 Bicentennial\, Victors for Art: Michigan’s Alumni Collectors celebrates the deep impact of Michigan alumni in the global art world. This two-part exhibition (Part I: Figuration followed by Part II: Abstraction on view July 1– October 29) presents works collected by a diverse group of alumni that represent the breadth of the University and over seventy years of graduating classes. The works themselves are equally diverse\, ranging from ancient sculptures to contemporary multimedia works. Part I: Figuration features works by Henri Matisse\, Elizabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun\, Mark Tansey\, and Mickalene Thomas\, among others\, and allows visitors to explore the variety of artistic responses and purposes encompassed by the term “figuration”. It also offers an unprecedented opportunity to view art that may have never been publicly displayed otherwise—and most certainly\, not all together. For visitors\, and especially for future Michigan alumni\, Victors for Art illuminates the shared passion for art fostered by the Michigan experience.\n\nThis exhibition was organized by Joseph Rosa\, Guest Curator\, in collaboration with Laura De Becker\, Helmut & Candis Stern Associate Curator of African Art\, Jennifer Friess\, Assistant Curator of Photography\, Lehti Mairike Keelman\, Assistant Curator of Western Art\, and Natsu Oyobe\, Curator of Asian Art.\n\nLead support for Victors for the Arts: Michigan's Alumni Collectors is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the University of Michigan Health System\, the University of Michigan Office of the President\, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the University of Michigan Bicentennial Office.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Role of Institutional Agents in Promoting Equity and Inclusion in STEM Learning and Outcomes
DESCRIPTION:Student outcomes in STEM are shaped not only by their individual efforts\, motivation\, aspirations\, and behaviors\, but also by the extent to which institutions\, departments\, and faculty create opportunities for students to succeed\, while taking active steps to put these opportunities within students’ reach. In particular\, students from groups that are historically underrepresented in STEM fields benefit significantly when educators act to remove cultural\, informational\, and social barriers that often prevent students from accessing the resources and learning experiences that support their academic success. STEM educators are uniquely positioned to create inclusive classrooms and departments and to provide key forms of social and institutional support to historically underrepresented students. \n\nIn this workshop\, faculty and graduate student educators will come to understand the concepts of equity\, equity-mindedness\, and the importance of institutional agents in promoting student learning and outcomes in STEM fields. Institutional agents are practitioners who use their own cultural\, social\, and human capital to act on behalf of students. Based on research by the Center for Urban Education (CUE) that has demonstrated the benefits that a network of institutional agents provides to historically underrepresented students in STEM\, this workshop will arm participants with specific strategies on how to promote equity and inclusion in STEM by employing equity-minded approaches inside and outside of the classroom. By engaging in multiple activities and through the use of self-assessment instruments developed by CUE\, participants will develop an understanding of the specific behaviors\, habits\, and mindsets of equity-minded institutional agents.

SUMMARY:Performance:Peter Bradley Adams
DESCRIPTION:Peter Bradley Adams introduced himself as a member of folktronica duo Eastmountainsouth. He launched his solo career with \"Gather Up\" (2006)\, a brooding\, autumnal album recorded in his apartment. Peter continues his introspective explorations of the middle ground between hope and heartache on his current \"The Mighty Storm.\" He offers strong melodies and a calm emotional intensity that comes through best in small venues.\" \"I’m not an unhappy person\,\" Peter says\, \"but I do have a strong melancholic side. And I'm most drawn to the music that reflects that.\" His melancholic outlook is fully realized on \"The Mighty Storm\,\" a record that compliments his warm burnished melodies with his most tender vocals to date. Americana songwriter and Berklee College of Music graduate Lydia Luce opens.
