DESCRIPTION:Where a gemstone or a grain of gold comes from is no longer a question only paper trails can answer. Emeralds show what is possible: using the largest global dataset available\, more than 1\,000 LA-ICP-MS analyses of gem-quality emeralds\, machine learning models trained on just eight trace elements (Li\, V\, Cr\, Fe\, Sc\, Ga\, Rb\, Cs) determine geographic origin with 96.8% accuracy. Gold is the harder problem\, and the more urgent: illegal mining in the Amazon drives mercury contamination and opaque supply chains. We are now applying the same architecture to native gold\, building the curated reference datasets needed to test whether source-related groupings can be resolved across the geologically heterogeneous Amazonian craton\, a stringent challenge given low trace-element concentrations and overlapping geochemical signatures. Built on well-documented reference collections such as Harvard's and partner Brazilian institutions\, this work provides an initial basis for geochemical screening of mercury-linked illicit supply chains\, and a template for the future of mineral traceability.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:2026-2027 CSAS Lecture Series | Rummana Hussain's Feminist Cosmopolitics
DESCRIPTION:In her relatively brief career\, the Indian artist Rummana Hussain (1952-1999) straddled painting\, drawing\, performance\, video\, and installation. She turned to the latter three modes in the mid-nineties\, following the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya and the ensuing anti-Muslim violence in her adopted city of Bombay. This talk will analyze Hussain’s shifting approach to her artistic practice during this period\, as her postmodernist allegories in paint gave way to feminist interrogations of identity\, representation and signification using objects\, language and the body.\n\nRattanamol Singh Johal is the Shireen and Afzal Ahmad Assistant Professor in history of art at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. His current book project\, *Forms of Despair*\, offers an account of experimental\, lens and time-based art emerging in India in the final decades of the twentieth century as metropolitan artists were confronted with the limitations and failings of their postcolonial\, cosmopolitan imaginaries.\n\nImage caption: Rummana Hussain\, Living on the Margins\, 1995.
