DESCRIPTION:The Raoul Wallenberg Institute\, in conjunction with Talking Maize and Blue\, the Communications and Media department\, and Program in Transcultural Studies invites you to attend three FREE events (with food provided!) on October 5th\, October 6th\, and October 8th!\n\n1) How to Talk: A Dinner Workshop with a Game Come meet new people and beta test\nHow to Talk: A Class in a Box. This retro card deck will teach you old-timey conversation skills to build connection faster\, facilitate authentic sharing\, and navigate differences gracefully. Not like any class you will find in a classroom\, the evening will be filled with lighthearted activities to practice the art of talking. Pizza will be served. Monday\, October 5th from 5-7pm in North Quad’s Space 2435.\n\n2) Pizza and Playdecks Come play The Pluralism Playdeck\, a low-key scaffolded card\ngame designed to allow university students to practice the soft skills they need to\nengage in compassionate and honest conversations about hot-button issues across\nideological and demographic differences. You'll learn about yourself\, others\, and develop a skill set that will serve you well in both social and professional settings. Lunch will be served. Free copies of the Pluralism Playdeck will be available to take home. Tuesday\, October 6th from 12:00-1:30 in the Rackham West Conference Room.\n\n3) The Open Spoon: Belonging Join us for a facilitated evening of low-key storytelling on a theme. Bring a story or just come to listen. Liz Barney from the Open Spoon will facilitate this informal exchange of stories about a time when participants felt a sense of belonging. A cross between a campfire and a dorm room chat\, the Open Spoon lets you see the world through other eyes for a night. Food will be served. DESCRIPTION:What is Europe’s strategic future as transatlantic ties unravel? What are its options as US priorities and capabilities change over in a world in which the distribution of power is changing rapidly? Europe has to chart its new course beyond the immediate impact of the second Trump presidency.\n\nFrançois Heisbourg is a senior advisor on Europe of the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) and special adviser of the Paris-based Fondation pour la Recherche Stratégique (FRS). He has served in government (French mission to the UN in New York\, policy planning at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs\, international security adviser to the Minister of Defense)\, industry (Thomson-CSF\, today’s Thales\; Matra\, now in Airbus)\, academia (professor of the world politics course at Sciences-Po Paris)\, and the think-tank world (as director of the IISS and subsequently the FRS). He has sat on blue-ribbon bodies\, notably the French government’s White Paper on terrorism (2006) and the Defense and National Security White Papers (under President Sarkozy in 2007-2018 and President Hollande in 2012-2013)\; the International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament\; and the International Commission on the Balkans. He chaired the council of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) from 1998 to 2018\, and of the IISS (2001-2018)\, and was a Richard von Weizsäcker Fellow at the Bosch Academy in Berlin (2015-2017). SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Exploring the Mind | Growing Up Has Changed: How the Path to Adulthood Has Shifted Across Generations
DESCRIPTION:The path from adolescence to adulthood has changed dramatically over the past several decades. Compared with earlier generations\, today young adults spend more time in school\, enter careers later\, form long-term romantic partnerships in different ways\, delay marriage and parenthood\, and move in and out of adult roles with less predictability. These changes raise important questions: What does it mean to “grow up” today? Are young people simply taking longer to become adults\, or has the very nature of adulthood changed? In this talk\, I provide an overview of the modern transition to adulthood — what it is\, why it matters\, and how it has evolved across recent generations. I examine changes in education\, work\, relationships\, parenthood\, and health-related behaviors such as substance use. Rather than viewing young adulthood as a fixed stage that looks the same across time\, I consider how historical circumstances shape the opportunities\, challenges\, and expectations young people face. The goal is to better understand not only today’s young adults\, but also the changing social landscape in which each generation comes of age.\n\nAbout the speaker: Justin Jager is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology and Associate Research Professor at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. As a developmental psychologist\, he studies how young people grow into adulthood and how that process has changed across generations. His research looks at the many parts of life that shape this transition\, including family\, friends\, school\, work\, romantic relationships\, parenthood\, and health-related behaviors such as substance use. He is especially interested in how social and historical changes alter the opportunities\, expectations\, and challenges young people face as they move toward independence. By studying adolescence and young adulthood in its social and historical context\, his work helps shed light on what it means to “grow up” in a changing world.
