DESCRIPTION:The Department of Piano hosts a guest lecture by Todd Van Kekerix\, Assistant Professor of Piano and Piano Pedagogy at the University of Houston and Artist-in-Residence\, Center for Performing Arts Medicine at Houston Methodist Hospital.\n\n*What does it take to bring music to the bedside - and do it well?*\n \nDrawing on his work at Houston Methodist Hospital\, Todd Van Kekerix explores the artistic\, interpersonal\, and practical skills pianists need to serve effectively in healthcare settings. Patient stories\, video examples\, feedback\, and outcomes data make the work concrete while revealing what is rewarding\, surprising\, and challenging at the bedside. \n\nThe session considers repertoire flexibility\, lead-sheet realization\, on-the-spot arranging\, emotional presence\, and bedside manner\, along with the practical realities of identifying hospital partners\, understanding Artist-in-Residence structures\, preparing for patient interactions\, and navigating liability and logistics. \n\nA live request-and-response demonstration will show how musical decisions are made in real time\, followed by discussion of how these capacities can be cultivated through studio class\, pedagogy coursework\, and community engagement. The lecture concludes by asking how a broader definition of the pianist might reshape training and professional opportunity.

(Logan Pearce\, ELT Postdoctoral Fellow\, Department of Astronomy)\n\nSail through a tour of the neatest moons in the solar system\, highlighting the specialness of Earth’s Moon. Visit fascinating moons like Io\, Titan\, Europa\, Enceladus\, and even Pluto. We will then explore detections of moons around other planets outside our solar system.\n\nTalk 2 - Wild Thoughts on Our Moon: Listening to the Universe from the Dark Side (Bingcheng Jin\, Graduate Student\, Department of Astronomy)\n\nWe will journey through history to explore humanity’s ancient fascination with the Moon and consider one of the wildest ideas in science history: building observatories on the Moon. DESCRIPTION:Updated 9/25/26: The Cleveland Orchestra musicians went on strike early this morning\, and their concert at Hill Auditorium scheduled for Friday\, September 25 has been canceled.\n\nPROGRAM\nFranz Liszt Orpheus\nBohuslav Martinů Symphony No. 2\, H. 295\nJohannes Brahms Symphony No. 2 in D major\, Op. 73\n\nAfter a 15-year absence\, The Cleveland Orchestra returns to Ann Arbor to open UMS’s season\, with a program conducted by Franz Welser-Möst in his 25th and final year as music director of the ensemble.\n\nThe performance opens with one of Liszt’s 12 symphonic poems\, Orpheus\, a work that composer Camille Saint-Saëns said is “woven of sunbeams and starlight.” \n\nBohuslav Martinů’s Symphony No. 2\, commissioned by the Czechoslovakian community in Cleveland in 1943 and premiered by the Orchestra\, is appreciated for its pastoral character and a joie de vivre that has been likened to fellow Czech Antonín Dvořák’s orchestral compositions. \n\nThe program closes with Johannes Brahms’s second symphony\, another pastoral work with mischievous dances and peaceful melodies.\n\nPlease note early 7 pm start time.\n\nA pre-performance talk with UMS and Cleveland Orchestra leadership begins at 5:45 pm in the Modern Languages Building.
