DESCRIPTION:This conversation\, part of the Samantha Woll Dialogues\, brings together two writers\, Almog Behar and Ayat Abou Shmeiss\, both of whom use the language of poetry to explore their own identities: Jerusalem-born Behar looks to his family roots in Iraq and Turkey to advocate for the restoration of Arabic to its place in Jewish culture\, and Jaffa-born Abou Shmeiss expresses her dual identity as a Muslim-Palestinian and as an Israeli citizen in her award-winning poetry and human rights advocacy. The panel will be moderated by Raoul Wallenberg Institute Fellow Stephanie Kraver\, a scholar of modern Arabic and Hebrew literature who specializes in transcultural exchange\, expressions of mourning\, trauma theory\, and translation.

DESCRIPTION:The Premodern Colloquium presents visiting scholar Matylda Urjasz-Raczko for our first event of the 2026-2027 academic year. On Tuesday\, October 6th\, Matylda will give a presentation which examines the figure of Bona Sforza of Aragon (1494-1557)\, Queen of Poland\, Grand Duchess of Lithuania\, Princess of Bari\, Rssano in the Kingdom of Naples\, and heir to the Duchy of Mila and the Kingdom of Jerusalen. It is thought not as a gender biography. Her figure and life serve as a case study to illustrate the processes taking place in the Mediterranean world and in northern and eastern Europe in the time just before the Habsburg domination in the mid-16th century. The focus is therefore on the time and places where Bona came to rule. DESCRIPTION:The American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid blended learning course will help prepare you to recognize and care for a variety of breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults\, children and infants as well as prepare you to recognize and care for a variety of first aid emergencies. Participants who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate for CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid valid for two years.\nThis is a blended learning course that requires roughly 4 hours of online work prior to the first day of the course.\n**There is no fee for current Michigan Recreation employees. If still having issues\, click this link. \nFirst-Year Relationship and Sexuality Talk (FYRST) is a required\, in-person\, and peer-facilitated workshop that came directly from feedback and listening sessions with current University of Michigan students. Our goal is to create an accessible\, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester\, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training. \n“I see that there is more than one session\, does it matter which one I sign up for?”\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops. \n“Is this workshop required?”\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n“I’ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.” \nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. Our workshop is specifically designed to respect and validate the experiences of survivors and has been carefully constructed to avoid any specific descriptions of violence and focus instead on themes of empowerment\, communication\, and boundary setting. You’ll have the opportunity to begin crafting your personal goals for the year and then use those to complete the mentor “favoriting” process—helping us make the best possible match for you. You will also learn about the program structure and expectations\, and explore how the program can help you achieve your career goals.
