SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Losing the Plot? How narrative identity challenges affect independent scientists’ progression\, thriving\, and resilience
DESCRIPTION:Creating and maintaining a clear\, meaningful\, and sustainable narrative about one’s identity is both a fundamental human motive and is associated with a host of positive outcomes. Typically\, organizations and professional institutions provide people with scripts for building such an identity which serve to guide behavior\, clarify relational expectations\, and define career pathways. Yet despite investing heavily in their own education and training\, professional gig workers may struggle to develop their identity story both because they lack the guidance of such structures and because the dynamics of gig work continually challenge important elements of one’s narrative identity\, including plot\, characters\, coherence\, continuity. In this paper we ask two interrelated questions: How does the experience of ongoing narrative challenges impact workers’ weekly behaviors and well-being? And how do gig workers build their career narratives? Addressing the first question\, we propose that such challenges don’t only manifest as occasional bouts of existential anxiety\, but instead are experienced as everyday realities that affect individuals’ sense of weekly progress\, their feelings of thriving in their work lives\, and their perceptions of their own resilience by affecting their ability to both stay focused and motivated\, and exhibit the proactivity needed to get ahead of problems and tackle challenges. We test and find support for our hypotheses with longitudinal survey data collected three times per week over five weeks from 207 independent scientists. To address the second question\, we analyze 244 independent scientists’ reports about their career sensemaking and future plans. These data are the first that we know of to explore how professional gig workers conceptualize and think about careers in the gig economy and offer insight into the core plot themes that gig workers use to make sense of and craft their stories of their work selves. Our paper contributes to theorizing at the intersection of identity and gig work by demonstrating how narrative identity serves as a critical resource for contemporary workers and providing insight into how professional gig workers build this resource by writing their career narratives as they go.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Archival Play: Art Making and Archives
DESCRIPTION:The Latinx Studies Rackham Interdisciplinary Workshop invites you to a conversation featuring two guests\; artist and educator Nicole Marroquin and art historian Deanna Ledezma. Moderated by American Culture PhD candidate Pau Nava. Using the concept of play in the archive\, this conversation discusses how Chicago artists and scholars engage in community based archival practices as part of art education and artistic practice. This talk will include images and examples from the Diana Solis Archival Collection\, featured in With Care\, an exhibition by Nicole Marroquin on view at U-M's Institute for the Humanities from February 16 to March 22\, 2023. How have artists used and engaged archival collections as part of their practice? How can community archival practice be a form of artistic intervention? How are artists re-imagining the relationship between archives and community? How do artists toe the line between creating and collecting an archival collection?

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Book Launch for \"The ABC's of Black Authors\" by Lauren McHale Mills
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the book launch of The ABC&#039\;s of Black Authors\, a new coloring\nbook and reading guide created by Stamps Student Lauren McHale Mills (BFA\n‘23). Every spread in the book contains an illustration of an author\,\nwith a short biography and reading list. \nFor the event\, Lauren will be in conversation with fellow Stamps\nstudent Moteniola Ogundipe (BFA ‘23) speaking about how she created the book\nand why she felt publishing this book right now was so important. Following\nLauren and Moteniola’s conversation there will be a book signing\, a reception\nwith light refreshments and a few select spreads from the book available for\nguests to color and take home. There will also be the opportunity for you to\npurchase your own copy of the book. \n\nLauren explains: “I created this book to primarily introduce\nnew audiences to a small selection of Black authors they may not have previously\nknown. I also hoped that individuals who were already lovers of Black\nliterature\, or literature in general\, would find enjoyment in these pages. My\naim for this book was for it to serve as not only a coloring book\, but an artist\nbook. As these 26 illustrations were crafted to be stand-alone art pieces as\nwell.”\n\n\nThe first 10 guests will receive a complimentary copy of the book.\nAdditional books will be for sale. \n\nPlease contact Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan at jenjkhan@umich.edu\nfor more information.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Combinatorics Seminar: The equivariant Hilbert series and formal languages
DESCRIPTION:Motivated by statistical models with varying numbers of parameters\, in the past decade there has been an interest in asymptotic phenomena for infinitely many objects such as ideals and algebras related by a group action. We can record detailed quantitative data for infinitely many related objects in a multivariate formal power series\, which we call the equivariant Hilbert series. The rational form of these series\, if it exists\, is of interest as it can provide additional data about the objects in study. In searching for this rational form\, we utilize theory of languages and their automata from computer science. For a language and a weight function on it\, the sum of weights of words in the language is a multivariate formal power series. This series has a always rational presentation when the language satisfies certain rules determined by a directed graph on a finite number of nodes\, commonly known as a regular language. The rational form can be easily computed via the graph. Now\, given a family of related algebraic objects\, we search for regular languages and weights on them such that their formal power series equals the equivariant Hilbert series for our related objects. The talk will be introductory and is based on is based on https://arxiv.org/abs/2204.07849 and https://arxiv.org/abs/1909.13026. No knowledge on Hilbert series or languages will be assumed.
