SUMMARY:Exhibition:COLOR CODE\, MARIANETTA PORTER
DESCRIPTION:Color Code: Conundrums and Complexities will be presented at GalleryDAAS\, located on the ground floor of Haven Hall on the University of Michigan’s central campus\, from March 11 to April 29\, 2016. The exhibition showcases the recent work of mixed-media artist and University of Michigan professor Marianetta Porter. Color Code celebrates the artistry and eloquence of the black experience in all its complexity--its brutal history\, the richness of its folklore and traditions\, and the beauty of its vernacular expression.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:PhonDi
DESCRIPTION:Carmel O'Shannessy will speak on \"Obstruent Discrimination and Production in Light Warlpiri.\"\n\nAbstract\nLight Warlpiri is a mixed language that combines nominal structure from Warlpiri with verbal structure from English and Kriol (an English-lexified creole) with innovations (O'Shannessy\, 2005\, 2013). The lexicon is drawn from both Warlpiri and English-lexified sources. Warlpiri has one series of obstruents and no fricatives or affricates (Hale\, 1977\; Laughren\, 1984) while Kriol (Baker\, Bundgaard-Nielsen\, & Graetzer\, 2014) and English have voiced and voiceless obstruents as well as fricatives and affricates. Kriol differs from English in also relying on duration to realise the stop contrast\, and in having a limited set of voiceless fricatives (/s ʃ f/\; /v/ is an allophone of /b/).\n\nHow do these systems combine in Light Warlpiri? I report on a task about English and Kriol-like obstruent discrimination by speakers of Light Warlpiri. The study tests whether speakers of Light Warlpiri behave in accordance with a phonological inventory like that of 1) Warlpiri\, resulting in difficulties discriminating all stop and fricative voicing distinctions\; 2) Kriol\, resulting in difficulties discriminating stop and fricative distinctions based on voicing\, but improved discrimination of stop-distinctions based on voicing and duration\, or 3) English\, resulting in good voicing-based stop and fricative discrimination. I then present preliminary analysis of VOT and constriction duration in stops from Light Warlpiri production data.

DESCRIPTION:If your research were to be explained in the context of pilot-wave theory (a more deterministic interpretation of quantum mechanics\, which reproduces all the original predictions of ordinary quantum mechanics)\, how would you approach the \"measurement problem\"\, and how would you used this \"deterministic\" approach to further your research.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Reframing Roman Luxury
DESCRIPTION:This interdisciplinary conference is being held in conjunction with the international loan exhibition\, Leisure and Luxury in the Age of Nero: The Villas of Oplontis near Pompeii at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology (February 19–May 15\, 2016).\n\nThe conference will expand and complicate our perception of Roman luxury (luxuria) associated in the ancient literary record with the moral decline of elite Romans who lived lives of leisure in their lavishly adorned houses and villas. Recent research at Oplontis and other sites indicates that this reductive view is ripe for reassessment.\n\nSee conference program for details.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Science\, Art\, and Spirituality
DESCRIPTION:Science\, Art\, and Spirituality examines the interplay of humanity's attempts to understand its existence through its rational (scientific)\, aesthetic (artistic)\, and transcendent (spiritual) faculties. These three great human enterprises have marked our progress as a species from the early glimmerings of prehistoric cave paintings to the Hubble Space Telescope. The long path from one to the other has been blazed by such pioneers as Pythagoras\, Da Vinci\, Copernicus\, Spinoza\, Newton\, Luther\, Jefferson\, Faraday\, Darwin\, Cezanne\, Einstein\, and Le Maître - just to name a few. We will search historical records for the patterns that connect and drive our historical imaginations forward. Instructor: Michael Kapetan. This class for adults 50+ meets Fridays through April 22nd.\nhttps://olli-umich.org/olli/index.php/member/ctlg/viewEventDetails/740

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Energy & Environmental Economics
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The standard approach to recovering the cost of electricity provision is through postpaid metering with monthly bills for consumption already incurred. These bills represent a substantial share of income for poor customers\, and vary unpredictably from month to month. For poor\, liquidity constrained customers\, finding resources to pay these monthly bills therefore presents a major challenge. If unable to pay\, customers face disconnection\, the utility loses revenue\, and the service provision model is undermined. A possible solution to this problem is prepaid metering\, in which customers buy electricity upfront and use it until the prepaid amount is consumed. We partner with the City of Cape Town to examine customer responses to prepaid electricity metering. Approximately 2200 postpaid customers were involuntarily assigned to receive a prepaid meter\, with exogenous variation in the timing of the switch. We first establish the impact of prepaid metering on electricity use\, which falls by about 10 percent and remains lower for the first year after the switch. Larger proportional reductions from customers with larger outstanding balances and those with a history of paying bills late. We observe no within-household spillovers to water use\, though the likelihood that other bills\, including water\, are paid late increases substantially. The overall impact on revenue to the utility is mixed\, since the greatest reductions come from revenue-generating portions of the increasing block tariff schedule. We conclude with a discussion of implications for revenue and also for customer welfare.
