SUMMARY:Other:Honors Conversion Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Honors courses are offered in a wide variety of disciplines to allow you as much flexibility as possible in choosing courses that meet your interests and academic goals. We realize\, however\, that in a college with thousands of courses offered each term\, there is no way we can offer an Honors component for every course that Honors students are interested in taking. Attend ONE conversion workshop (or make an advising appointment) for details and access to the conversion paperwork required. (This is necessary\, even if you have completed Honors course conversions in the past).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Psyche amongst the Victorians: An Aspect of Apuleian Reception
DESCRIPTION:This talk considers the extensive reception in Victorian England of Apuleius'\nstory of Cupid and Psyche from his second-century Latin novel Metamorphoses\n(The Golden Ass)\, in both poetry and prose\, and concludes by looking at the rich\nreception of the story in art in the period\, especially in the work of Sir Edward Burne-Jones.\n\nStephen Harrison has been teaching Classics at Corpus since 1987. His main research and teaching interests are in Latin literature and its reception. He has written books on Virgil\, Horace and on the Roman novelist Apuleius\, and has edited\, co-edited or co-authored more than twenty books on Virgil\, Horace\, the Roman Novel\, Classics and literary theory and Latin literature in general\, and on the reception of classical literature\; his most recent monograph is Framing The Ass: Literary Texture in Apuleius' Metamorphoses (OUP\, 2013)\, and his commentary on Horace Odes 2 will appear with CUP in 2016. He is currently working on further books on the receptions of Horace and Apuleius. He is very interested in how Classics is taught and researched elsewhere in the world. Outside his tutorial duties (still very much the core of what he does) he has been a visiting lecturer in five continents\, makes regular visits to North America and Italy\, has recently become more involved in classics in Malta\, Brazil and Japan\, and worked for some years on collaborative Latin commentary projects in the Netherlands and Germany\; he is an occasional visiting professor at the University of Copenhagen.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:WCED Lecture. Loser’s Consent and Winner’s Restraint: The State of Democracy in Southeast Asia
DESCRIPTION:What are the keys to stable\, effective democracy? Allen Hicken explores this question by drawing on the cases of Thailand\, Indonesia\, and the Philippines. First\, he will examine the state of political parties in the region and whether they are a necessary ingredient for a healthy democracy. He will then discuss what voters need to know in order to make good choices. Finally\, he will present two attitudes that must be present for a democracy to endure. \n \nAllen Hicken studies political institutions and political economy in developing countries. His primary focus has been on political parties and party systems in developing democracies and their role in policy making. His regional specialty is Southeast Asia where he has worked in Thailand\, the Philippines\, Indonesia\, Malaysia\, Singapore\, and Cambodia. Professor Hicken is the author of Building Party Systems in Developing Democracies\, published by Cambridge University Press in 2009. He is also the editor of Politics of Modern Southeast Asia: Critical Issues in Modern Politics (Routledge Press\, 2009)\, and coeditor of Party and Party System Institutionalization in Asia (Cambridge\, 2015).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Colloquium Series
DESCRIPTION:We demonstrate that the integration of data-driven dynamical systems and machine learning strategies with adaptive control are capable of producing efficient and optimal self-tuning algorithms for many complex systems arising in the engineering\, physical and biological sciences. We demonstrate that we can use emerging\, large-scale time-series data from modern sensors to directly construct\, in an adaptive manner\, governing equations\, even nonlinear dynamics\, that best model the system measured using sparsity-promoting techniques. Recent innovations also allow for handling multi-scale physics phenomenon and control protocols in an adaptive and robust way. The overall architecture is equation-free in that the dynamics and control protocols are discovered directly from data acquired from sensors. The theory developed is demonstrated on a number of example problems. Ultimately\, the method can be used to construct adaptive controllers which are capable of obtaining and maintaining optimal states while the machine learning and sparse sensing techniques characterize the system itself for rapid state identification and improved optimization. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:ASP Lecture | 'Grasping the Constellations': On the (Im)possibility of Writing Armenian History
DESCRIPTION:How do we write stories of survivors? How do people continue to live as citizens of a state that once sought their annihilation? While there is a plethora of work on the Armenian genocide and subsequently the diaspora\, there is a dearth in the literature on the Armenian citizens of Turkey\, especially those in Anatolia. This lecture examines the difficulties and possibilities of writing the Armenian past of genocide survivors in Anatolia when people and their stories are fragmented\, displaced\, and left no archives. The lecture will present a reading of the recent oral accounts of Armenians in Turkey in the light of Walter Benjamin’s concept of history with the aim of situating these works as possible sources of historiography\, and exploring critical methods for writing undocumented pasts.
