SUMMARY:Exhibition:Removed
DESCRIPTION:Removed (2016) explores processes of progressive translation\, abstraction and distortion. Musical improvisation is captured as choreographic experience\, then encoded into digital animation and 3D-printed sculptural forms. The performances are transformed by their conversion into visual media: sound is removed\, movement is abstracted from human anatomy into non-representational geometry\, and time is rendered as space. Removed creates a dialogue between the intuitive and the formalized\, and invites questions about the nature of translation and the absences it conceals.\n\nJoin us for an exhibit reception on Tuesday\, September 13th.\n\nChristopher Burns is a composer\, improviser\, and multimedia artist whose works explore collage\, layering\, and the use of generative algorithms to form and develop both musical and visual elements. His work creates a dialogue between complexity and clarity\, incorporating densely braided\, rapidly shifting materials alongside gradually evolving\, linearly directed textures. He is currently scholar-in-residence at the Digital Media Commons.

SUMMARY:Presentation:The Emergence of Human Cooperation: Evidence from Children and Chimpanzees
DESCRIPTION:Cooperation is a hallmark of human social life\, spanning from simple acts of helping individuals to collaborative acts in which teams achieve outcomes that no single individual could achieve alone. However\, the origins of these behaviors are unclear. Are humans initially driven by purely selfish motives and must be taught to be cooperative? Or do we have a biological predisposition for cooperation? How do humans learn to share a common resource according to what’s ‘fair’? \nI will present a framework that derives hypotheses about the critical proximate mechanisms supporting cooperation from evolutionary theory. I propose that for cooperation to evolve\, individuals have to possess two distinct sets of psychological skills: the ability to identify and create opportunities for cooperative interactions with others (creating benefit) and mechanisms to solve the free-rider problem to sustain cooperation as a viable strategy (distributing benefit). \nTo evaluate this framework\, I will present empirical studies with children examining how these two sets of skills develop over childhood. In particular\, while young children already possess basic skills to help others and share valuable resources\, social norms and social experience begin to influence children’s cooperation in later ontogeny. These results are complemented by studies with chimpanzees to illuminate the extent to which these abilities are unique to humans\, or shared with our evolutionary relatives. I conclude with a proposal of how this framework motivates new developmental\, comparative\, and cross-cultural research to shed light on the ontogenetic and phylogenetic roots of the psychological abilities underpinning human cooperation.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Quantum Phase Transitions: A New Approach From Adiabatic Continuity and Wavefunction Overlap
DESCRIPTION:In quantum many-body systems\, quantum phase transitions are among the most fascinating phenomena. In general\, quantum phase transitions can be classified into two categories: (1) conventional and (2) topological. Conventional quantum phase transitions are the quantum generalization of thermal phase transitions. Similar to their classical counterparts\, they are characterized by spontaneous symmetry breaking. A topological phase transition doesn’t have any symmetry breaking. Instead\, it is the singular point where the quantum wavefunction changes its topology. In comparison to conventional phase transitions\, our knowledge on topological phase transitions are much more limited. In fact\, we don’t even have a general recipe yet to determine whether two quantum states have the same topology or not\, and a complete and constraint-free classification of topological states is still absent. As a step toward this ultimate goal\, we prove a general theorem: for two arbitrary quantum states\, as long as the inner product between the two wavefunctions is nonzero\, there exists an adiabatic path connecting the two quantum states. This theorem can be utilized to study all topological phase transitions in non-interacting or weakly-correlated systems\, as well as certain strongly-correlated systems. For topological phase transitions\, our theorem implies that two quantum states with finite wavefunction inner product must belong to the same quantum phase and thus have exactly the same topological structure. We will further discussion how this theorem can help us understand the classification of topological states\, as well as its implications in experiments.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Financial/Actuarial Mathematics
DESCRIPTION:In the smallest filtration with respect to which a given random time is a stopping time\, we represent and characterize local martingales and semimartingales. We then provide necessary and sufficient conditions on the representation of such a semimartingale such that the absence of arbitrage conditions NA_+\, NA\, NUPBR\, or NFLVR hold. One direction of the proof involves explicit constructions of arbitrage opportunities and unbounded profits with bounded risk. The other direction employs a generalized Gronwall—Bellman inequality.\n\nThis talk is based on joint work in progress with Martin Herdegen (University of Warwick). SUMMARY:Other:Honors Conversion Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Honors courses are offered in a wide variety of disciplines to allow you as much flexibility as possible in choosing courses that meet your interests and academic goals. We realize\, however\, that in a college with thousands of courses offered each term\, there is no way we can offer an Honors component for every course that Honors students are interested in taking. Attend ONE conversion workshop (or make an advising appointment) for details and access to the conversion paperwork required. (This is necessary\, even if you have completed Honors course conversions in the past).
