SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Nam Center Colloquium Series | North Korea: The State Built by Narrative
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will address the decisive role played by narratives in the establishment of North Korea. The most notable of these narratives concerns the history of anti-Japanese armed struggle. Conferring a sense of sovereignty\, authenticity\, and legitimacy to the North Korean state\, anti-Japanese armed struggle has continued to serve as a rich source of nationalist lore and a highly effective vehicle for forging identity and unity. In fact\, it was by laying claim to this history and narrativizing it in specific ways that Kim Il-sung was able to transform national longing into personal charisma. Kim Il-sung will thus emerge in this presentation not merely as the represented hero of anti-Japanese armed struggle\, but as that narrative’s definitive author.\n\nHyungki Shin is a professor at the Department of Korean Language and Literature of Yonsei University in South Korea\, where he teaches Korean literature and history of modern Korean criticism.\n\nProfessor Shin has conducted research\, among other topics\, on Korean literature in the post-liberation period and on North Korean literature.\n\nHis publications include “A Study on Literary Movements after the Liberation of Korea” (1988) (Haebang chikhu ŭi munhak undongnon)\, “A Study on Stories in the Liberation Period” (Haebanggi sosŏl yŏn'gu) (1992)\, “Understanding North Korean Fiction” (Pukhan sosŏl ŭi ihae) (1996)\, “Transition and Fate” (Pyŏnhwa wa unmyŏng) (1997)\, “A History of North Korean Literature: From Anti-Japanese Revolutionary Literature to ‘Juche’ Literature” (Pukhan munhaksa : hangil hyŏngmyŏng munhak esŏ chuch'e munhak kkaji) (2000)\, “Fascism in Literature” (Munhak sok ŭi p'asijŭm) (2001)\, “Beyond Nation Narrative” (Minjok iyagi rŭl nŏmŏsŏ) (2003)\, “Narrated History―A Criticism on the Figure of History depicted by Narrative” (Iyagi toen yŏksa : Nam-Pukhan minjok iyagi ka kŭryŏnaen yŏksasang pip'an) (2005)\, “Records of Schizophrenia\; Re-reading Fictions Modernism from the Periphery” (Punyŏl ŭi kirok : chubyŏnbu modŏnijŭm sosŏl ŭl tasi ikta) (2010)\, “Narratives of the Age\, Age of Narratives” (Sidae ŭi iyagi\, iyagi ŭi sidae) (2015).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RTG Working Seminar on Geometry\, Dynamics and Topology
DESCRIPTION:A real projective structure on a compact manifold is a maximal atlas of charts whose images are in real projective space and whose transition functions are restrictions of projective transformations. In this talk I'll give an introduction to the Hilbert metric on a manifold with a real projective structure and give a number of applications. My plan is to first describe a theorem of Kobayashi which gives a sufficient condition for the developing map to be a diffeomorphism onto a convex domain. Then I plan on describing work of Benoist which gives further restrictions on the developing map when the fundamental group is Gromov hyperbolic. I will end the talk with some open questions. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Analysis/Probability
DESCRIPTION:The goal of this talk is to give a unified approach to the solutions of a class of isoperimetric problems by relating them to the exterior differential systems (EDS) studied by R. Bryant and P. Griffiths. It stayed largely unnoticed that one and the only PDE (but with different initial data) lies in the base of many classical isoperimetric inequalities. But more importantly\, by a funny change of variables (provided\, for example\, via EDS) this PDE can be made linear: namely\, the inverse heat equation. Then such classical inequalities as log-Sobolev\, Poincare\, Beckner--Sobolev\, Bobkov's inequality become particular solutions of this linear inverse heat equation. This observation allows us to invent many new isoperimetric inequalities (sharp of course) that are ``MORE sharp\" than the sharp classical ones. For example\, we improved the Beckner--Sobolev inequality\, and the talk will contain such an improvement for a particular exponent (where the new inequality looks especially nice). There are also other new isoperimetric inequalities in the paper having as CONSEQUENCES the classical ones. Our understanding is that the method of exterior differential systems (EDS) has been never used in any harmonic or geometric analysis inside the scope of our knowledge .\n(Joint work with Paata Ivanisvili). SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:\"Experimental Games: Affect\, Neoliberalism\, and Play\"
DESCRIPTION:The American Studies Consortium presents: a public lecture by Patrick Jagoda (UChicago)\n\nVideogames serve as a form for staging\, processing\, and testing reality and our experience of the historical present. In particular\, games belong to and complicate the experimental economy of the early twenty-first century. A central aspect of this economy has been the mobilization of forethought and forms of nonconscious cognition. How then can the non-conscious affects of games help us change conscious levels of human life\, such as critical thought\, judgment\, and ultimately action? In their interplay between rationality and affect\, videogames have a formidable concept-generating capacity. To demonstrate the possibilities and limits of this medium\, this talk ultimately turns to the case study of Anna Anthropy's Dys4ia: an autobiographical piece that uses game-specific elements such as unfair rules\, unsatisfying mechanics\, unattainable objectives\, and diverse avatars to convey the difficulties of transgender experience within heteronormative culture.\n \nPatrick Jagoda is associate professor of English and Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Chicago. He is also a co-editor of Critical Inquiry and co-founder of the Game Changer Chicago Design Lab and the Transmedia Story Lab. Two of his books have been published in 2016: Network Aesthetics (University of Chicago Press) and The Game Worlds of Jason Rohrer (co-authored with Michael Maizels\, MIT Press). Jagoda has also worked on several projects related to digital storytelling\, transmedia game design\, and new media learning. For more information\, see: http://patrickjagoda.com/.
