SUMMARY:Performance:The Plastic Bag Store
DESCRIPTION:This custom-built public art installation and immersive film experience uses humor\, craft\, and a critical lens to question our culture of consumption and convenience — specifically\, the enduring effects of our single-use plastics.\n\nShelves are stocked with thousands of original grocery items meticulously sculpted by hand\, all made from discarded single-use plastics organically harvested from streets and garbage dumps. Several times a day\, the store transforms into an immersive\, dynamic stage for a film in which inventive puppetry\, shadow play\, and intricate handmade sets tell the darkly comedic and sometimes tender story of how the overabundance of plastic waste we leave behind might be misinterpreted by future generations — and how what we value least may become our most lasting cultural legacy.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:Free Movie Screening John Lewis: Good Trouble
DESCRIPTION:An intimate account of legendary U.S. Representative John Lewis’ life\, legacy\, and more than 60 years of extraordinary activism — from the bold teenager on the front lines of the Civil Rights movement to the legislative powerhouse he was throughout his career. \nAfter Lewis petitioned Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to help integrate a segregated school in his hometown of Troy\, Alabama\, King sent “the boy from Troy” a round trip bus ticket to meet with him. From that meeting onward\, Lewis became one of King’s closest allies. He organized Freedom Rides that left him bloodied or jailed and stood at the front lines in the historic marches on Washington and Selma. He never lost the spirit of the “boy from Troy” and called on his fellow Americans to get into “good trouble” until his passing on July 17\, 2020.

SUMMARY:Performance:Laith Al-Saadi
DESCRIPTION:Laith Al-Saadi began singing at age four and began playing guitar at 13. At 15 he formed his first blues band\, Blue Vinyl. In short order they opened for blues greats like Buddy Guy (to whose work his playing has been compared)\, Luther Allison\, Son Seals\, and Taj Mahal and toured the Netherlands. At the University of Michigan\, Laith was a member of the Johnny Trudell Orchestra and freelanced with Detroit greats like Thornetta Davis\, Jocelyn B\, The Reefermen. Laith is a real road warrior who generally can be found playing at least five nights a week around Michigan and beyond\, and Michigan's secret got out when he made the finals of television's \"The Voice.\" If you haven’t checked out this monster Michigan talent yet\, you really should! Tonight Laith performs a rare solo show.
