SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:An UMMA + Kelsey Dialogue: Transmissions across the Gap: 'Cosmogonic Tattoos' with Artist Jim Cogswell
DESCRIPTION:Artist Jim Cogswell will explore his work in 'Cosmogonic Tattoos'\, a visually stunning and rhythmic procession of vivid\, but fragmentary images installed on the glass walls of both the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and UMMA. On the occasion of the U-M Bicentennial\, Cogswell's installation investigates how objects are understood in different contexts through time and space\, across materials\, geographies and institutions. The installation invites audiences to think about how cultures thrive by borrowing from each other\; how the displacement and distribution of objects narrates histories of human displacement and exile.\n\n'Cosmogonic Tattoos' celebrates the power of architecture\, ornament\, and material objects to shape knowledge\, historical memory\, and cultural identity. Its narrative speaks to us about distance\, movement\, and migration\, through sagas of disaster\, appropriation\, and plunder.\n \nCogswell\, who is also a Professor at the U-M Stamps School of Art & Design\, will be joined by Terry Wilfong\, Kelsey Museum Director and Curator of Graeco-Roman Egyptian Collections\, and Raymond Silverman\, Professor of History of Art and Afroamerican and African Studies\, for a discussion and Q & A with the audience. The discussion will be moderated by Jennifer Friess\, UMMA Assistant Curator of Photography.\n \nPublic reception to follow at the Kelsey Museum from 8:00 - 9:00pm.

SUMMARY:Other:Recruiting New Members for Fall 2017!
DESCRIPTION:The LSA Honor Council is an undergraduate student organization dedicated to developing initiatives that aid in the promotion of respect\, integrity\, and personal responsibility. We also attend meetings hosted by the Office of Student Academic Affairs for students accused of academic misconduct.   In our recruitment efforts\, we prioritize the importance of forming a council composed of individuals with diverse backgrounds and viewpoints. This spectrum of varied perspectives enables our council to more effectively address issues of integrity on our campus. This upcoming year\, we are recruiting a group of motivated and dedicated LSA students who are interested in working closely with the deans\, faculty\, and fellow students to promote a campus culture that values integrity. This past year\, we have accomplished this goal by hosting faculty department presentations\, tabling events\, and discussions of current ethical issues. Most recently\, we hosted Dr. Victor Strecher from the School of Public Health to present a talk on “Designing a Happy Life.” Given the breadth of our activities\, it is crucial that we incorporate students with diverse skill sets to maximize our council’s potential. We hope that you will join us next fall! Link to application: http://lsastudenthc.weebly.com/become-a-member.html
