SUMMARY:Exhibition:Prisons and Politics in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the political reasons for why people are imprisoned: for speaking out\, for writing\, for violating repressive laws\, framed because of their color or politics\, for stealing from the rich\, for refusing the military draft\, for whistleblowing\, for attempting to overthrow the government\, for standing up for a belief\, or for walking over a forbidden line.\n\nThe items focus on maintaining one's humanity behind bars\, promoting political causes\, and offering solidarity in support of prisoners.\n\nThe groups and individuals whose stories are featured in the Labadie Collection share one thing in common: fighting to make a better world. In the process\, many of them have been arrested\, brutalized\, censored\, deported\, imprisoned\, or executed. Some were innocent victims of violent police or discriminatory policies.\n\nThe U-M Library’s Joseph A. Labadie Collection documents the history of social protest movements and marginalized political communities from the nineteenth century to the present. Established in 1911\, it is the oldest and largest public archive of its kind in the world.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Rivers of Power
DESCRIPTION:This talk explores the many ways that humans have used rivers over time\, and how we continue to do so today. Since our earliest cities established along the Tigris-Euphrates\, Indus\, Nile\, and Yellow Rivers\, anthropogenic use of rivers has changed over time and space. Yet their critical importance persists because they provide five fundamental benefits: access\, natural capital\, territory\, well-being\, and power. The manifestations of these benefits have changed\, but societal demands for them have not.\n\nDr. Laurence C. Smith\, John Atwater and Diana Nelson University Professor of Environmental Studies and Professor of Earth\, Environmental and Planetary Sciences\, Brown University\, has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles\, essays and books about the Arctic\, water resources\, and satellite remote sensing technologies. He is a Guggenheim Fellow and American Geophysical Union Fellow. His research has been reported by The New York Times\, The Wall Street Journal\, The Economist\, The Los Angeles Times\, NPR\, BBC\, and others\, and he was an invited speaker at the World Economic Forum in Davos. His general audience book “The World In 2050: Four Forces Shaping Civilization’s Northern Future” won the Walter P. Kistler Book Award and was a Nature Editor’s Pick of 2012. His second book “Rivers of Power” about rivers and society\, was a Geographical best book of 2020.\n\nThis is the second of a six-lecture series. The subject of the series is Global Waters: The Tip of the Iceberg. The next lecture will take place January 27\, 2022. The title is Global Rivers: A New View From Space.\nLearn from well-known experts about an array of interesting subjects\, with an interactive Q&A period following each lecture.\n\nPreregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the lecture will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Thursday Lecture Series | Japan's U.S. Investment Dynamic: A New Look at the U.S. - Japan Economic Relationship
DESCRIPTION:Please note: Due to updated guidance from the university in regards to the COVID policy\, this lecture will be only in a webinar format. Please register here to attend: https://myumi.ch/xdd15\n\nThis event is free and open to the public\, but registration is required if you intend to participate virtually. Once you've registered\, the joining information will be sent to your email. The Center for Japanese Studies will follow state\, local\, and University of Michigan guidelines for in-person events.\n\nJapan is #1. That's right\, Japanese companies are the leading foreign direct investor in the United States (2020). The velocity of U.S. based Japanese investment has gradually unfolded into a singular economic phenomenon. Unnoticed by the media\, yet greatly supported by state and local governments\, who have witnessed and consistently supported this virtuous cycle of manufacturing expansions of Japanese businesses in America's communities. By obtaining an understanding of the depth of Japanese direct investment in the U.S.\, one will obtain deeper insights of the bilateral relationship and thereby a more holistic perspective of the Japan - U.S. economic relationship.\n \n Since 2017\, Ralph Inforzato has been Chief Executive Director of JETRO Chicago. As Chief Executive Director\, he oversees JETRO Chicago’s activities designed to facilitate trade and investment between Japan and 12 Midwestern states served by JETRO Chicago. Prior to his new position\, Mr. Inforzato served as Executive Director\, Business Development for JETRO Chicago. In this position he worked to implement JETRO’s team based projects to directly engage in assisting US business expansion to Japan. He initiated in-bound and out-bound technology collaboration for US & Japanese small and medium sized companies\, which resulted in numerous business agreements. He also sustained the relationships that JETRO Chicago has with business\, state government and university leaders.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Misidentifications in the Pohrt Collection of Native American Photography
DESCRIPTION:The Richard Pohrt Jr. Collection of Native American Photography contains approximately 1\,470 photographs related to Native Americans and Native American history taken mainly between 1860 and 1920 by more than 150 photographers. The majority of photographs are individual and group portraits of people from tribes west of the Mississippi\, with the Apache\, Cheyenne\, Crow\, and Lakota/Dakota being particularly well represented. \n\nThe collection contains both studio and outdoor photographs and reflects the dramatic upheavals in Native American life that occurred as a result of the expansion of the United States of America. Our speaker\, Jakob Dopp\, will discuss some of the challenges encountered while cataloging this collection (such as discovering misidentifications and other errors in certain photographs) as well as additional aspects of the project\, including collaboration with Native American Tribal authorities and other consultants about how to appropriately deal with culturally sensitive materials and cultural dissemination. \n\nThis class meets on Thursday\, January 20.\n\nPre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.
