SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Multi-scale Process Interactions in (Eco-)Hydrology\, Erosion and Sediment Transport\, and Floods
DESCRIPTION:Understanding and predicting process dynamics across a range of scales are fundamental challenges for basic hydrologic research and practical applications. This is particularly true when larger-scale processes\, such as climate and weather\, need to be translated to finer space-time scale process dynamics\, such as soil moisture\, channel hydraulics\, and erosion and sediment transport. In this context\, we pursue both modeling approaches and empirical observations and this presentation will illustrate both\, highlighting latest research efforts. Specifically\, we have developed a suite of integrated models simulating hydrologic and vegetation processes\, flow dynamics\, erosion\, and sediment transport\, tRIBS+VEGGIE-FEaST. The model aims to take advantage of the growing wealth of data representing watershed topography\, vegetation\, and soil\, as well as urban environment\, facilitating mechanistic exploration of (eco)hydrological factors and their feedback mechanisms. Research applications will demonstrate an urban flooding problem and a mechanistic attribution of non-uniqueness of upland soil erosion. Another example will focus on ecohydrology of Amazonian rainforests that experience seasonal droughts\, while showing maximum rates of photosynthesis and evapotranspiration during these dry intervals. This presentation will discuss a hypothesis of “root niche separation” and highlight preliminary results from the on-going field monitoring campaign\, its challenges and opportunities.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Lecture Series | Encounters at Sea: Piracy and Protection in the Indian Ocean
DESCRIPTION:Please plan to spend a bit more time with us on the 16th\, as this lecture will be immediately followed by our Fall semester welcome reception.\n\nMaritime piracy as a kidnap and ransom economy enjoyed unprecedented success in the Western Indian Ocean from 2007-2012. While global attention was transfixed by the capture of oil tankers and large container ships\, the expansion of piracy in the Indian Ocean led to many more engagements between pirates and motorized dhows that sail from port to port in the western Indian Ocean littoral. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in India\, UAE\, and Somalia this talk focuses on these interactions between pirates and dhows in the watery expanses of the Western Indian Ocean. Specifically\, by highlighting what came to be known as the practice of “mothershipping”–the use of captured dhows to expand the spatial and temporal range of piracy—I note worlds of violence\, threat and hospitality constructed in these moments of encounter. Instead of a vision of the Indian Ocean that foregrounds long histories and cosmopolitan exchange\, “mothershipping” emphasizes forms of contact that are both fleeting and overwhelmed by real and potential violence. Through an ethnographic engagement with this practice\, I show how these onboard encounters can help theorize spatial and regional futures in the Indian Ocean and beyond.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Digital Destiny
DESCRIPTION:Digital Destiny presents 20 sculptures in metal and found materials created over the past five years by the Cameroonian artist Dieudonne Fokou. Fokou experiments continuously with new media\, as he explores different modes of creation in the plastic arts. His work is nourished by themes of justice and the search for peace and liberty\, as well as by his travels\, problems inherent to his society as well as his hopes and dreams for a better world.

SUMMARY:Other:Honors Conversion Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Honors courses are offered in a wide variety of disciplines to allow you as much flexibility as possible in choosing courses that meet your interests and academic goals. We realize\, however\, that in a college with thousands of courses offered each term\, there is no way we can offer an Honors component for every course that Honors students are interested in taking. Attend ONE conversion workshop (or make an advising appointment) for details and access to the conversion paperwork required. (This is necessary\, even if you have completed Honors course conversions in the past).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Pharmaceutical Sciences Special Seminar Featuring Dr. Les Benet
DESCRIPTION:The seminar will be presented by Leslie Benet\, PhD\, Professor\, UCSF School of Pharmacy. \n\n“BDDCS\, the Rule of 5 and Drugability” \n\nThe rule of 5 methodology appears to be as useful today in defining drugability as when it was proposed\, but recognizing that the database that we used includes only drugs that successfully reached the market. We do not view additional criteria necessary nor did we find significant deficiencies in the four Rule of 5 criteria originally proposed by Lipinski and coworkers. BDDCS builds upon the Rule of 5 and can quite successfully predict drug disposition characteristics for drugs both meeting and not meeting Rule of 5 criteria. More recent expansions of classification systems have been proposed and do provide useful qualitative and quantitative predictions for clearance relationships. However\, the broad range of applicability of BDDCS beyond just clearance predictions gives a great deal of further usefulness for the combined Rule of 5/BDDCS system.
