DESCRIPTION:Registration for the 2023 Leadership Crisis Challenge (LCC) opens on Wednesday\, January 4 at 12 PM!\n\nLCC is a premier action-based learning experience that immerses participants in a simulated business and media crisis\, powered by the Sanger Leadership Center at Michigan Ross. Students play the part of executives responding to the issues as they unfold\, while leveraging the expertise of communication coaches\, faculty\, and a board of directors made up of esteemed U-M alumni\, to prepare for a press conference attended by real members of the media.\n\nThis year's LCC will be held on January 26-27 and is open to ALL U-M students. There will be two levels of competition—graduate and undergraduate. Two undergraduate teams and two graduate teams will receive a scholarship\, split among participants. In addition to the competition\, there will be educational workshops\, a networking session\, and access to the Big House field.\n\nDon't miss out on this amazing\, one-of-a-kind opportunity! Apply by January 22.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Chairs Distinguished Seminar: Hydrogen Safety and Reliability for Sustainable Mobility
DESCRIPTION:Fatemeh Salehi\, \nAssociate Professor\nMacquarie University \n\nAbout the seminar:\nHydrogen can create a practical pathway to replace fossil fuels and address decarbonization challenges\, particularly for sectors such as aviation. However\, safety concerns need to be addressed when adopting this alternative since a failure in operation can result in catastrophic consequences. The safety and reliability analysis supports the development of consistent national and international codes and standards and the creation of clear procedures and regulations which are essential for the safe implementation and adaptation of hydrogen systems. This talk will discuss the use of advanced computational modelling for hydrogen safety with a key focus on consequence modelling to minimize the impact of hydrogen accidents. This includes hydrogen leakage\, dispersion and fire scenarios.\n\n \n \nAbout the speaker:\nDr. Fatemeh Salehi is an Associate Professor at the School of Engineering\, Macquarie University\, Australia. Her expertise is in the development of physical models for computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations of single- and multi-phase flows to advance low-emission and safe engineering solutions. She is particularly interested in clean fuels such as hydrogen which has the potential to address decarbonisation challenges. Her research in the field of hydrogen is recognized in the NSW Hydrogen Strategy published by New South Wales Government\, Australia in 2021. She is an executive member of the Combustion Institute (ANZ) and a member of the Working Groups of Standards Australia for the development of hydrogen standards.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Climate & Space Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:\"Impacts of Indian Ocean Warming on the Atlantic Ocean Circulation and Climate\"\n\nAbstract:\n\nThe tropical Indian Ocean (TIO) has warmed by 1°C since the 1950s\, at a faster rate than the\nother tropical oceans. In this talk\, I will discuss how this warming can affect the Atlantic Ocean\nvia atmospheric and oceanic teleconnections. Specifically\, by reorganizing the atmospheric\nWalker circulation in the equatorial band\, this warming can reduce precipitation in the tropical\nAtlantic\, resulting in pronounced surface salinity anomalies. On multidecadal timescales\, these\nanomalies are advected to northern high latitudes and strengthen the Atlantic meridional\noverturning circulation (AMOC). The resultant AMOC changes lead to a stronger hemispheric\nasymmetry and a northward shifted intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ). On shorter\ntimescales\, Indian Ocean warming generates a train of atmospheric planetary waves\, which reach\nthe subpolar North Atlantic\, strengthen surface westerly winds there\, and cool the underlying\nocean within a few months to years. This mechanism could potentially explain the suppressed\nwarming in the subpolar North Atlantic (known as the &quot\;warming hole&quot\;) seen in the observational\nrecord. Further\, I will discuss the implications for past and future climate changes and ocean\ninterbasin teleconnections.
