SUMMARY:Exhibition:Prisons and Politics in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the political reasons for why people are imprisoned: for speaking out\, for writing\, for violating repressive laws\, framed because of their color or politics\, for stealing from the rich\, for refusing the military draft\, for whistleblowing\, for attempting to overthrow the government\, for standing up for a belief\, or for walking over a forbidden line.\n\nThe items focus on maintaining one's humanity behind bars\, promoting political causes\, and offering solidarity in support of prisoners.\n\nThe groups and individuals whose stories are featured in the Labadie Collection share one thing in common: fighting to make a better world. In the process\, many of them have been arrested\, brutalized\, censored\, deported\, imprisoned\, or executed. Some were innocent victims of violent police or discriminatory policies.\n\nThe U-M Library’s Joseph A. Labadie Collection documents the history of social protest movements and marginalized political communities from the nineteenth century to the present. Established in 1911\, it is the oldest and largest public archive of its kind in the world.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Eileen Southern and The Music of Black Americans: A Celebratory Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:Featuring:\n◦ Naomi André (Professor in the Departments of Afroamerican and African Studies\, Women’s and Gender Studies\, and the Residential College)\n◦ Antonio Cuyler (Associate Professor of Arts Administration and Visiting Assistant\nProfessor at SMTD)\n◦ Charles Garrett (Professor of Musicology at SMTD)\n◦ Marc Hannaford (Assistant Professor of Music Theory at SMTD)\n◦ Kira Thurman (Assistant Professor of History and German in LSA)\n\nEileen Southern (1920–2002) is one of the most influential figures in Black music scholarship. This roundtable discussion\, featuring professors from across the entire University of Michigan\, aims to introduce faculty and students to Southern’s work and discuss its importance for contemporary music studies.\n\nSouthern was the first Black scholar to earn a PhD in musicology in the United States\, founded the first academic journal dedicated to Black music\, The Black Perspective in Music\, in 1973\, was the first Black scholar to publish in The Journal of the American Musicological Society (in 1968)\, and the first Black women to be awarded tenure at Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences (in 1976). Southern’s The Music of Black Americans: A History (Norton)\, first published in 1971\, has appeared in three editions and was one of the first histories of Black music to cast such an expansive view\, encompassing music from Africa\, American slavery\, minstrelsy\, Black church music\, ragtime\, blues\, jazz\, opera\, art music\, rock ‘n’ roll\, disco\, And hip-hop\, among others.\n\nThis book represents an important early intervention in music studies that otherwise ignored the rich history of Black music and the struggles of Black musicians in the face of white supremacy.\n\nThis event commemorates Southern and her work\, highlights a longer history of Black people writing about Black culture\, and promotes Southern’s work as important for teaching and learning today. By better understanding the history of Black music “from its origin in Africa through its manifestations in colonial America and then in the United States\, up to the present time\,” as well as scholars like Southern who have engaged with these efforts for many years\, we can work toward a more just and equitable future. Currently based at the School of Music\, Theatre\, and Dance and the College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts at the University of Michigan\, these panelists will engage this text by sharing how it helped shape their own scholarship and how this book remains relevant to teaching inclusive curricula and in diverse interdisciplinary classrooms.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Yongyi Guo\, PhD Candidate\, Department of Operations Research & Financial Engineering\, Princeton University
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Dynamic pricing is one of the most common examples of online decision problems. With the development of e-commerce and the massive real-time data in online platforms today\, feature-based pricing has become increasingly important. Semi-parametric feedback structure is a natural formulation in such problems\, and benefits from tools from non-parametric statistical estimation.\n\nIn this work\, we study feature-based pricing with semi-parametric feedback structure. We propose a dynamic learning and decision algorithm that makes use of the classical idea of the tradeoff between exploration (statistical estimation) and exploitation (reward optimization). Under mild conditions\, our proposed algorithm achieves near-optimal regret in terms of dependence on the time horizon. This result offers a new perspective on combining statistical learning and decision-making in the online decision context.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:The Clements Bookworm: \"Vanguard\" Author Conversation with Martha S. Jones
DESCRIPTION:In the standard story\, the suffrage crusade began in Seneca Falls in 1848 and ended with the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920. But this overwhelmingly white women's movement did not win the vote for most black women. Securing their rights required a movement of their own. Historian Martha S. Jones’ 2020 book “Vanguard” shows how African American women defied both racism and sexism to fight for the ballot\, and wielded political power to secure the equality and dignity of all persons. From the earliest days of the republic to the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act and beyond\, black women—Maria Stewart\, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper\, Fannie Lou Hamer\, and more—were the vanguard of women's rights\, calling on America to realize its best ideals.\n\nRegister at myumi.ch/gjgzR\n\n*The Clements Bookworm is a webinar series in which panelists discuss history topics. Recommended books\, articles\, and other resources are provided in each session. Live attendees are encouraged to post comments and questions\, respond to polls\, and add to our conversation and camaraderie.*\n\nThis episode of the Bookworm is generously sponsored by Tom Wagner.
