SUMMARY:Exhibition:Forever Unfinished: Making and Remaking a Public University
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan was founded in 1817 as a public institution\, a concept for which there were few models. What makes a university public? What should it look like? Whom should it serve? Who should have access to its resources\, and where should those resources come from?\n\nThis exhibit explores how students\, faculty\, staff\, politicians\, and citizens have attempted to answer these questions. These stories invite us to imagine U-M's future as a public university based on what we know about its past.\n\nExhibit team: Jonathan Farr\, Nora Krinitsky\, Michelle McClellan\, Gregory Parker\, Emily Price\, Kate Silbert\n\nThis LSA Bicentennial Theme Semester exhibit is presented with support from the College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts and the University of Michigan Bicentennial Office. Additional support provided by the Department of History and the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies.

SUMMARY:Performance:Faculty/Guest Recital: Amy Chavasse\, dance\, Sarah Konner\, and Austin Selden
DESCRIPTION:Associate Professor of Dance Amy Chavasse brings together colleagues from the Department of Theatre & Drama Tzveta Kassobova and Malcolm Tulip\, along with New York-based BFA dance alums Sarah Konner and Austin Selden to present three original works of movement\, text\, and theatre.\n\nEmi\, Amy and Mimi\, the Celebrated Love Partners\, and their Bicycle\, Emi Nomo is a new trio by Amy Chavasse\, Sarah Konner\, and Austin Selden that imagines three characters bound together through a shared memory of something lost. Constructed around tightly hewn rhythms that draw the performers together in ecstatic proximity\, a fantastical narrative emerges. deux dogtooth is a duet for Chavasse and Tulip that moves between precise gesture and text\, and improvisational tasks that question categories and the names of things\, To Scale is a duet performed by Tzveta Kassabova and visual artist Heimo Wallner\, which was developed in Bulgaria in 2016.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Power Contained: The Art of Authority in Central and West Africa
DESCRIPTION:Before colonization\, complex hierarchical societies flourished in Central and West Africa. At their summits were a select few—kings and chiefs whose authority was derived from their direct connection to powerful ancestors and predecessors. These rulers were wrapped in expensive textiles or costly furs\, and covered in beads and precious metals\, materials that signaled status and safely contained the power they wielded. The famous minkisi (meaning “power figure”) sculptures of Central Africa were similarly activated between the adornment of the king’s physical body and minkisi and demonstrates how authority was expressed and power contained across a range of historical cultures.\n\nLead support for Power Contained: The Art of Authority in Central and West Africa is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and the African Studies Center.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Hands-On Demo: Fantastic Fluids
DESCRIPTION:Explore the fascinating world of fluid dynamics! Together we will discuss what is a “fluid\,” and through experimentation\, we will learn how fluids move and interact. Learn how wind creates waves\, and test the surface tension of different liquids. How do different fluids mix? Can you ever unmix them? Learn about how and why U-M researchers are studying fluid dynamics. This demo is filled to the brim with hands-on experiments. Funded by the National Science Foundation.\n\nHands-on demonstrations are 20-30 minute interactive programs on the 2nd floor of the Museum. They include both brief presentations highlighting University research and engaging hands-on activities\, and are suitable for adults and children ages 5 and up.
