SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Fareed Zakaria’s Ten Lessons for a Post-Pandemic World
DESCRIPTION:We will read and discuss the title book in which Zakaria states “even with vaccines and therapies\, a plague has a unique effect on the world economy....the most transformative event of our lifetimes...simultaneously affecting almost every human being on the planet.” \n\nThis book is not about masks or vaccines. It deals with impacts on governance\, politics\, markets\, inequality and social trends. He talks about “tight” and “loose” countries and how their responses to COVID may affect their ways of governing. \n\nGerry Lapidus has lead OLLI book discussions since 2005. Classes are informal and conversational. He leads the first discussion and requests volunteers to lead subsequent meetings while he serves as moderator. Please read Introduction and Lesson One (p. 1-29) for the first session. \n\nThis class meets on Tuesdays\, from January 18 – May 31. No classes on holidays.\n\nPre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Creating droplets of the early universe in the laboratory with nuclear collisions\n
DESCRIPTION:Zoom link: \nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/91409362110?pwd=UDlja2FuYlZWVFNEMWFrOTlkWFNEZz09\n\nAbstract: In the first few microseconds after the big bang\, the universe was in a state of matter called the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Research into surprising effects found in collisions of a light nucleus with a heavy nucleus is one of the main pillars of present-day research in high energy nuclear physics\, and the discovery of QGP droplet formation in these small-volume collisions has fomented major developments in relativistic hydrodynamics. The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory has conducted a geometry scan\, comprising collisions of three different systems with three different intrinsic geometries. The PHENIX collaboration found the intrinsic geometry to be manifest in the measured correlations\, confirming QGP droplet formation\, and published the results in Nature Physics in 2019. A new PHENIX publication\, accepted by Phys Rev C\, explores these measurements in further detail by examining longitudinal dynamics. In this talk we discuss these latest results in the context of the geometry engineering program\, and briefly discuss additional future measurements.\n\n\n
