SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Thursday Lecture Series | From Malthus to Miracle: Rethinking the Economic Development of Japan
DESCRIPTION:If you wish to attend this event via Zoom\, please register at http://myumi.ch/mxbb4\n\nWhy was Japan the only non-Western nation to industrialize in the nineteenth century? This presentation argues that academic efforts to reinvent Japan's character-based language in the early 1870s facilitated a massive amount of translation of technical books. Unlike what we see in other 19th-century countries\, Japanese industries then grew in sectors that had the most to learn from western technical texts\, providing strong evidence that investments in academic research can have large and long-lasting impacts on economic growth in pre-industrial countries.\n \n U-M alumnus David Weinstein is the Carl S. Shoup Professor of Japanese Economy at Columbia University. He is also the director of the Center on Japanese Economy and Business (CJEB)\, co-director of Columbia’s APEC Study Center\, co-director of the Japan Project at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER)\, and a member of the Center for Economic Policy Research and the Federal Economic Statistics Advisory Committee. Previously\, Prof. Weinstein was chair of the Department of Economics and a senior economist as well as a consultant at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York\, the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco\, and the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. Prior to joining the Columbia faculty\, Professor Weinstein held professorships at the University of Michigan and Harvard University. He also served on the Council of Economic Advisors.\n \n His teaching and research interests include international economics\, corporate finance\, and the Japanese economy. Prof. Weinstein earned his Ph.D. and M.A. in economics from the University of Michigan and his B.A. at Yale University. He is the recipient of many grants and awards\, including five National Science Foundation grants\, an Institute for New Economic Thinking grant\, a Bank of International Settlements Fellowship\, and a Google Research Award.\n \n This lecture is made possible with the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EPID Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Department of Epidemiology Seminar Series\nApril 13\, 2023 | 12:00 - 1:00pm\n3755 SPH I\n\nFamilial and Genetic Determinants of Pregnancy Loss\nTsegaselassie Workalemahu\, PhD\, MSc\nRSVP: https://myumi.ch/EP5wM\n\nTalk Description:\nThe causes of approximately half of pregnancy loss cases are unknown. Novel genetic analysis techniques applied in a unique data source with families and large pedigrees allow identification of previously unrecognized causes of pregnancy loss. The results will improve risk stratification for pregnancy loss\, identify novel therapeutic targets\, facilitate closure and bereavement for grieving families\, and improve subsequent perinatal outcomes.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nDr. Workalemahu is a genetic epidemiologist investigating genetic factors of obstetric complications. He received his bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from St. Francis University in Loretto\, Pennsylvania and his doctoral degree in Epidemiology from the University of Washington in Seattle\, Washington. His post-doctoral training was at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Development in Bethesda\, Maryland. His research interests include genomic determinants of obstetric complications that are often linked with adverse health outcomes over one’s lifetime and population genetics.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LSI Seminar Series: Minoree Kohwi\, Ph.D.\, Columbia University\, Zuckerman Institute Mind Brain Behavior
DESCRIPTION:Neural progenitor cells in both mammals and insects transit through multiple states of competence to produce diverse neural cell types\, losing the ability to generate early-born neurons while gaining competence to generate later-born ones. How is competence regulated to ensure the development of a highly organized structure like the brain? Using Drosophila\, we find that neuroblasts (fly neural progenitors) undergo a developmentally-timed reorganization of their genome that impacts competence to activate genes in the descendent neurons. Here I will discuss mechanisms of neuroblast genome reorganization and the role of nuclear proteins in competence regulation underlying neural diversification. \n\nAbout the Speaker:\nMinoree Kohwi\, Ph.D.\nAssistant Professor\nNeuroscience\nColumbia University\, Zuckerman Institute Mind Brain Behavior\n\nUndergrad: Caltech\; Ph.D.: UCSF\, Programs in Neuroscience\, studying adult neurogenesis with Arturo Alvarez-Buylla\; Postdoc: University of Oregon\, studying regulation of neuroblast progenitor competence with Chris Doe \n\nCurrent Research at Columbia: Our lab investigates how diverse brain cells are generated by delving into the dynamic organization of the genome within neural progenitors. \n\nPlease Note:\nThis is a Hybrid Seminar: In person at Palmer Commons Forum Hall and on Zoom.

SUMMARY:Presentation:MICDE Ph.D. Student Seminar: Mingyan Tian
DESCRIPTION:Topic: *Pricing Physical Water Risk: Machine Learning Approaches to Quantify the Impact of Corporate Water Use Efficiencies in the Financial Markets*\n\nCorporate financial risk in their operations resulting from climate change and water resource limitations result in volatility in the capital markets. This has become a regulatory focus under the Task for Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD)\, forcing companies to disclose how climate is impacting their financial performance. This includes water risk exposures in water security and the impact of floods in supply chains\, logistics\, and operations resulting from water access. Corporate water intensity\, a proxy for climate transition risk\, relates water use efficiency to operational and capital asset risks. This information is generally not disclosed in financial or sustainability reports and is difficult for investors or regulators to assess\, and for risk managers to address. This seminar focuses on the development of econometric models to price water risk in equities with the aim of informing corporate decision-makers and external stakeholders to assess and benchmark the financial valuation of water risk and to allow for comparison across industry sectors.
