SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beautiful By Night
DESCRIPTION:Artist James Hosking lived in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood from 2010 to 2018\, during which time he developed the *Beautiful By Night* photo series and documentary film. The work is about the veteran drag performers at Aunt Charlie’s Lounge\, a small bar that has had an outsized influence on San Francisco’s LGBTQ+ community for more than twenty years. Sadly\, it is now the last gay bar in the area. The project captures the performers Donna Personna\, Olivia Hart\, and Collette LeGrande as they transform at home\, backstage\, and onstage. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Prisons and Politics in America
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit examines the political reasons for why people are imprisoned: for speaking out\, for writing\, for violating repressive laws\, framed because of their color or politics\, for stealing from the rich\, for refusing the military draft\, for whistleblowing\, for attempting to overthrow the government\, for standing up for a belief\, or for walking over a forbidden line.\n\nThe items focus on maintaining one's humanity behind bars\, promoting political causes\, and offering solidarity in support of prisoners.\n\nThe groups and individuals whose stories are featured in the Labadie Collection share one thing in common: fighting to make a better world. In the process\, many of them have been arrested\, brutalized\, censored\, deported\, imprisoned\, or executed. Some were innocent victims of violent police or discriminatory policies.\n\nThe U-M Library’s Joseph A. Labadie Collection documents the history of social protest movements and marginalized political communities from the nineteenth century to the present. Established in 1911\, it is the oldest and largest public archive of its kind in the world.

DESCRIPTION:When it comes to backing up the data on our computers\, phones\, and tablets\, many of us have thought\, \"Is that something I should be doing?\" While the answer is definitely YES\, setting it up can be confusing and feel daunting.\nHard drives vs. \"The Cloud.\" Apple Time Machine\, Windows File History\, Microsoft OneDrive\, Google Drive\, Apple iCloud (where is that cloud located anyway?). In this study group\, Jim Keen will explore the reasons for and common methods of backing up your data\, so you'll be able to decide what is best for your own situation.\nJim Keen holds a BA (communications) and an MA (educational studies) from the University of Michigan. He currently owns and operates Keen Focus Technology Tutoring. This study group will meet Tuesday February 1.\nPre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. SUMMARY:Presentation:Biopsychology Colloquium (619 Presentation):  Hormonal contraceptives: depression\, motivation\, and the stress response
DESCRIPTION:Please note this talk will be in person and also via Zoom.\n\nMotivational changes and a dysregulated stress system are two dissociable aspects of depression. Both are regulated by gonadal hormones\, specifically estrogen and progesterone. Given that 85% of women use oral contraceptives\, the most common type of hormonal contraceptives (HCs)\, for an average of five years\, a key knowledge gap is understanding the impact of HCs on the brain. For some people\, HCs increase the risk for depression\, likely via the impact of HCs on stress-related responses. Nevertheless\, there is little known about the mechanisms by which this occurs. The overall goal of my research is to utilize a mouse model recently developed in our laboratory to understand how HCs contribute to the vulnerability to depression. There is consistent evidence that HCs blunt hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis response to acute stress. Moreover\, there is strong evidence that both estradiol and progestins (and metabolites) modify motivational processes. By using a mouse model of HC exposure to study these questions\, we will be able to systematically study the impact of HCs on specific psychological and physiological components of depression\, including anhedonia\, motivation\, and stress. We will also examine the effects of different HC formulations and determine underlying changes in circuit activation and stress-related signaling in the brain after HC exposure. This would improve personalized medicine allowing patients to be prescribed the HC formulation that is most effective while simultaneously limiting side effects.
