SUMMARY:Other:Understanding structure-function relationships in transition-metal-containing enzymes
DESCRIPTION:The Silakov laboratory seeks to uncover principles underpinning biology\'s control over the reactivity of metal complexes in enzymes. Millions of years of natural selection in harsh\, nutrient-limiting environments evolved organisms into highly effective and extremely selective metabolic systems. Organisms from all kingdoms of life are replete with enzymes that facilitate a staggering array of reactions with efficiency using nothing but abundant 3rd-row transition metal ions that is hard to replicate using pure synthetic chemistry approaches. To understand how similar metal-containing catalytic centers can vary their reactivity depending on the protein environment\, we employ various advanced experimental methods such as Electron Paramagnetic Resonance and Infrared spectroscopies\, (spectro)electrochemistry\, and protein film voltammetry. As some knowledge gaps about the function of enzymes stem from the absence of suitable experimental techniques\, we also have a strong interested in developing novel biophysical approaches that allow addressing such gaps. This talk will present two case studies performed by the Silakov laboratory: a superfamily of Fe/2OG oxygenases involved in the biosynthesis of natural products\, and [FeFe] hydrogenases which are highly effective H2-producing enzymes. The ultimate goal of our fundamental research is to inform the development of new biotechnologies to allow environmentally friendly biosynthetic production of much-needed molecules such as drugs and renewable energy resources. \nAlexey Silakov (The Pennsylvania State University)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary Islamic Studies Seminar. What is the Relation between the Sufi Khanaqah and Development in India?
DESCRIPTION:How do religious institutions affect long-run development? Most studies examining this relationship study its impact on human capital formation. I instead argue that decentralized religious institutions led to long-run development by anchoring market participation\, political competition\, and public goods provision at the micro-level. The legacy of the past millennium’s religious institutions permeates villages today. I provide empirical evidence from the Indian subcontinent\, where the Sufi Khanaqah evolved from the 13th century onwards. I construct a novel dataset of Khanaqah locations for all villages of India. The dataset is integrated with census-level data for the years 1991\, 2001\, and 2011\, road upgradation data for 2000-2015\, and pooled assembly election results for 1974-2018. Development is indicated by economic activity measured with night-light\, health measured by nutritional status\, literacy rate\, consumption per capita\, and poverty rate. I find that the presence of Khanaqah is empirically associated with higher long-run development at the village-level.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Local wellposedness of water wave equations with angled crests on the interface
DESCRIPTION:A class of water wave problems concerns the dynamics of the free interface separating an inviscid\, incompressible and irrotational fluid from the vacuum under the influence of gravity. In this talk\, we survey some results on wellposedness of these water wave equations\, and introduce a relatively recent approach that allows us to deal with interfaces that have angled crests.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Caroline Sinders: Intertwined Intimacy
DESCRIPTION:Intertwined Intimacy is a series of architectural sculptures ruminating on privacy and intimacy\, and how the infrastructure of visible and invisible spaces influences communities\, communications\, and safety. \nThis work stems from artist Caroline Sinders&#039\; previous work combining research driven art and human rights analysis that responds to current technology systems by focusing on how the design of &#039\;infrastructural&#039\; and &#039\;architectural&#039\; spaces\, both online and offline\, impacts safety. By focusing on prototypian futures\, Intertwined Intimacy observes impacts through public infrastructure\, and open\, digital commons inspired by mutual aid and open source technology. To generate this research\, Sinders analyzed how structures\, metaphors and engagements of privacy and security within technology impact mental models The sculptures create a labyrinth\, allowing for a space of reflection and consideration for the audience\, as the sculptures slowly become more and more opaque\, offering areas of hidden solitude and refuge.\nCaroline Sinders is the 2023 Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence. This annual international competition awards one residency per academic year to a visiting artist/designer who proposes to develop a new work in collaboration with members of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design and the University of Michigan community. Learn more about Sinders&#039\; residency and practice in this Q&amp\;A.\nSinders is an award winning critical designer\, researcher\, and artist. She is the founder of human rights and design lab\, Convocation Research + Design. For the past few years\, she has been examining the intersections of artificial intelligence\, intersectional justice\, systems design\, harm\, and politics in digital conversational spaces and technology platforms. She has worked with the Tate Exchange at the Tate Modern\, the United Nations\,the European Commission\, Ars Electronica\, the Harvard Kennedy School and others. Sinders is currently based between London\, UK and New Orleans\, USA.
