SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Alum Connection with Chelsea Racelis: Better Business – Change within Companies
DESCRIPTION:Chelsea Racelis says her “liberal arts education gave her the tools to bring her passions into the workforce\,” but her passion and drive was shining even before she jumped into the working world. While she was on campus\, Chelsea worked with the Ross portion of the U-M Diversity\, Equity\, And Inclusion strategic plan\, acted in the first year orientation show with Educational Theatre Company\, and co-led the Black-Asian Coalition. Upon graduation Chelsea went into consulting with Ernst & Young (EY)\, and soon after\, a role on EY’s corporate responsibility team. Looking for a more impactful role aligned with her values\, and knowing she could still be leveraging her liberal arts skillset to a greater degree\, Chelsea joined Cisco as the Inclusion & Collaboration Development Specialist.\n\nAbout Chelsea:\n\nChelsea is an all-rounder\, completing a dual degree at U-M in International Studies and Business Administration (‘19) which she uses to make change in her personal and professional spheres. Serving as the Inclusion & Collaboration Development Specialist at Cisco\, Chelsea describes herself as a strategist-idealist whose purpose is to do world-changing work with life-changing people. Her day job is powering inclusive futures for all at Cisco and the rest of the time\, she supports human rights leaders in Myanmar and beyond\, advocates for racial justice\, and tries (unsuccessfully) to become a morning person.\n\nYou should attend this session if you are:\n\n-A UM undergraduate LSA student\n-Interested in pursuing a career in consulting\n-Interested in DEI\, ESG/corporate social responsibility\, or human rights\n-Exploring career options for a passion in social justice\n\nWhat you’ll gain by attending:\n-Make a valuable connection with a successful LSA alum ready to help you\n-Get ideas for how to bring the meaningful parts of your LSA degree into your workplace\n-Get insights about how to advance within a company or organization\n\nRSVP NOW to be part of the conversation.\n\nThe LSA Opportunity Hub aims to deliver inclusive and accessible experiences and welcomes all LSA students to participate. This event will be hosted on Zoom (learn more about Zoom accessibility) and can be accessed by phone or computer. Presentation materials may be shared in advance if requested\, and live captioning will be provided. To request other accommodations please contact Sairah Husain at sairah@umich.edu or 734-763-4674 so we can make arrangements.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Parity symmetry breaking scale and Standard Model parameters
DESCRIPTION:The strong CP problem can be solved by parity symmetry. We first review two classes of models: the ones with the minimal fermion content and the ones with the minimal Higgs content. We then focus on the latter class of models and show that the parity symmetry breaking scale is predicted to be the energy scale at which the standard model Higgs quartic coupling vanishes. Surprisingly\, after fixing the parity symmetry breaking scale in this way\, the gauge coupling constants unify at a high energy scale. We also discuss a model with a dark matter candidate and show that the dark matter direct detection rate is predicted as a function of the standard model parameters.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Science Maps and Macroscopes
DESCRIPTION:To commemorate the launch of a new iteration of the Places & Spaces exhibit currently on display in the Clark Library\, Katy Börner presents on \"Science Maps and Macroscopes.\"\n\nThe exhibit showcases innovative approaches to data visualization\, critical for making sense of the large streams of data we confront on a daily basis. It provides examples of data visualizations that delight the eyes\, engage the viewer\, and impart vast amounts of information in a focused\, accessible format. \n\nDr. Katy Börner\, professor of information science at Indiana University in Bloomington\, uses visualization techniques to study the structure of scientific ontologies and the systems through which scientific collaboration is carried out. Börner is the curator of \"Places and Spaces: Mapping Science\,\" a comprehensive exhibit mapping ideas\, organizations\, and infrastructures in science and technology. This talk is in conjunction with the MIDAS Colloquium \"Datatopia: The Future of Scientific Discovery Through a Data Lens.\"

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Athena Eyster\, University of Wisconsin-Madison
DESCRIPTION:Oxygen is crucial for life on Earth today\, with oxygen’s first major rise ~2.4-2.0 billion years ago during the Great Oxidation Event (GOE) argued to have been a turning point for planetary habitability. Furthermore\, the subsequent trajectories of atmospheric and marine oxygen after this initial rise are critical for clarifying linkages between oxygenation and the evolution of complex life. Importantly\, massive iron formations have long been recognized as uniquely sensitive to marine oxygen levels and so form critical archives of early Earth’s oceans. Yet their relationship to marine oxygenation is complicated by uncertainties in the triggers for deposition\, which are particularly striking when examining massive iron deposits after the GOE. To help address these issues\, I present new geologic and geochronologic results from the Ironwood Iron Formation and Emperor Volcanics near Lake Superior. Synthesis of these new regional constraints with a revised compilation of existing data creates a global perspective that allows critical assessment of the marine conditions that trigger post-GOE massive iron deposition and the factors influencing the trajectory of marine oxygen.

SUMMARY:Performance:Connecting Currents - Women of the Rivers
DESCRIPTION:Connecting Currents: Women of the Rivers is an artistic exploration inspired by the healing properties of water: reflection\, release\, and restoration. This production examines the impacts of water on the “brown” feminine mind\, body\, and spirit. The experience features dance\, poetry\, audience participation\, vendors\, live music from Monica Blaire\, Class Act Band\, DJ Medusa and more.\n\nWater has impacted people of the African Diaspora for centuries. From the transatlantic slave trade\, whites only swimming pools of the Jim Crow\, the use of water hoses to subdue peaceful protestors during the Civil Rights Era\, and recently with residential water shut offs and the ongoing Flint water crisis\; water has been the involuntary contributor to separation\, distress and hardship for many people of the African Diaspora. Inspired by the healing properties of water—reflection\, release\, and restoration—Connecting Currents: Women of the Rivers is an interdisciplinary interactive experience that promotes an ecological and spiritual reconciliation and reconnection with water and one another starting with the community surrounding the Detroit River. What better location to encourage reconciliation with people of the African Diaspora than the river which many formerly enslaved Africans crossed to freedom.
