SUMMARY:Exhibition:Humanize the Numbers
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition displays images from the archive of photographs from Humanize the Numbers\, an ongoing collaborative project. Students and faculty at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor join individuals impacted by the criminal justice system in Michigan to create photographs for those on the outside. The project aims to showcase the creativity of those who are incarcerated\, using photography to allow their stories to add a personal dimension to the overwhelming statistics of mass incarceration. This exhibit hopes to foster discussion with policy makers\, activists\, and civic leaders about prison reform and mass incarceration.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:What has the Pandemic Taught Us About the American System of Health Insurance?
DESCRIPTION:Health insurance in the U.S. comes from many different public and private sources. This talk will consider how the coronavirus has illuminated the weaknesses (and one surprising strength) of our decentralized approach to courage.\n\nDr. Helen Levy is a Research Professor in the Department of Health Management and Policy\; she is also a Research Professor at the Institute for Social Research and the Ford School of Public Policy. She is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Before coming to the University of Michigan she was an Assistant Professor at the Harris Graduate School of Public Policy Studies at the University of Chicago and a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Scholar in Health Policy Research at the University of California at Berkeley. In 2010 - 2011\, Dr. Levy served as a Senior Economist to the President’s Council of Economic Advisers in Washington\, DC. \n\nDr. Levy’s research interests include the causes and consequences of lacking health insurance\, evaluation of public health insurance programs\, and the role of health literacy in explaining disparities in health outcomes. She is a co-Investigator on the Health and Retirement Study\, a long-running longitudinal study of health and economic dynamics at older ages. She is currently the recipient of a Career Development Award from the National Institute on Aging to study health literacy and health disparities among the elderly.\n\nThis is the first of five lectures to be presented once each month from February through June of 2022. A new series will start in September 2022.The next lecture in the current series will take place March 8\, 2022.The title is: The Dagger in the Heart of Christianity. Learn from well-known experts about an array of interesting subjects\, with an interactive Q&A period following each lecture.\n\nPreregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the lecture will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Biopsychology Colloquium (619 Presentation) - Vulnerable for addiction-like behavior: Disrupted cholinergic signaling and (neuro)immune response in sign-tracking rats
DESCRIPTION:Some rats (sign-trackers\; STs) are prone to attribute incentive salience to reward cues\, which can manifest as a propensity to approach and contact Pavlovian cues\, and for addiction-like behavior. STs also exhibit poor attentional performance\, relative to their counterparts\, the goal-trackers (GTs)\, mediated by attenuated cholinergic activity. Poor cholinergic-attentional control contributes to the propensity of STs to approach and utilize Pavlovian drug cues. In STs\, increases in neuronal activity fail to translocate choline transporters (CHTs) into synaptosomal plasma membrane\, thereby limiting the capacity of cholinergic terminals to sustain cholinergic activity. Here we investigated post-translational modifications responsible for disrupted CHT trafficking in STs\, and the hypothesis that attenuated cholinergic activity in STs causes exaggerated (neuro)immune responses. We determined levels of ubiquitinylated CHTs because ubiquitin-mediated processes can account for attenuated externalization of intracellular CHTs\, ranging from proteolysis to enhanced internalization or alternative compartmentalization. The proportion of ubiquitinylated CHTs\, extracted from cortex and striatum\, was robustly higher in STs than in GTs\, with no overlap in the data from the two phenotypes. Moreover\, modified CHTs located in intracellular domains\, but not in synaptosomal plasma membrane\, completely accounted for the phenotype-specific ubiquitylation levels. Ongoing experiments suggest elevated spleen levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in unchallenged STs. Following a systemic lipopolysaccharide (LPS) immune challenge\, brain levels of certain cytokines were not elevated based on phenotype. Moreover\, following LPS challenge\, ubiquitinylation levels of CHTs from the cortex and striatum were drastically increased in GTs\, but not STs\, suggesting that in unchallenged STs\, ubiquitinylated CHTs already are at maximum levels and unresponsive to an additional immune challenge. Together\, this evidence supports potentially escalating\, bidirectional interactions between disrupted cholinergic signaling and (neuro)immune responses as an integral component of the cognitive-motivational trait indexed by sign-tracking.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CANCELED - LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Reincarnations of Power Amongst the Mongols: From Möngke Tengri to the Śiditü Lama
DESCRIPTION:Note: The talk by Sangseraima Ujeed\, originally scheduled for February 8\, 2022\, will be rescheduled for a different date.\n\nTo date\, the historical Tibeto-Mongolian symbiosis has been analyzed from the perspective of Tibeto-centric or China-centric political histories. In this talk\, Dr. Ujeed reexamines the religio-cultural developments of Buddhism and Buddhist identity amongst the Mongols from the Mongol Empire through to the Qing period. As well as revisiting well-known religio-historical works\, her main case studies are extracted from newly obtained Mongolian and Tibetan language Buddhist biographies\, religious histories\, and records of received teachings from the early modern period. Collectively\, these case studies will demonstrate how the Mongols engagement with Tibetan Buddhism was fundamental for the dissemination and development of the wider Tibetan Buddhist tradition far beyond the realms on the steppe.\n \n Sangseraima Ujeed\, Assistant Professor of Tibetan Buddhism\, University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor\, received her MSt and DPhil degrees in Oriental Studies from the Department of Tibetan and Himalayan Studies\, Faculty of Oriental Studies\, University of Oxford. Her main research focus is the trans-national\, trans-regional\, and cross-cultural aspects of Buddhism\, lineage\, translation\, monastic and reincarnation networks\, and identity in Tibet and Mongolia in the Early Modern period\, with a particular emphasis on the contributions made by ethnically Mongolian monk scholars.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Two Spectacles\, Two Crowds: A Dialogue on Zhang Yimou’s Olympic Ceremonies\, 2008 and 2022
DESCRIPTION:Note: The talk by Sangseraima Ujeed\, originally scheduled for February 8\, 2022\, will be rescheduled for a different date.\n\nBeijing’s 2008 Olympic Opening Ceremonies still boast the largest live audience in history: a TV crowd of some 2 billion people. This also makes the event one of the most widely misunderstood pieces of political theater in our time. Drawing from his shifting career as international laureate and state artist\, director Zhang Yimou put together a double act for a double audience. In this discussion with Ann Lin\, LRCCS Director\, Dr. Osgood will discuss the legacy of Zhang Yimou’s historic show and the significance of its 2022 sequel.\n\nRegistration for this Zoom webinar is here: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_PmIUlkESQLKdLgqTFwregQ\n\nMiles Osgood is a Lecturer at Stanford University whose research focuses on the intersections between international sports\, world literature\, and the arts. His work on the Olympics has appeared in The Washington Post\, n+1\, and Public Books\, with an article forthcoming in Modernism/modernity. He is currently writing a book about the Cultural Olympiad of 1968 in Mexico City\, provisionally titled The Artist’s Torch.
