SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:In Contempt: Defending Free Speech\, Defeating HUAC
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the launch of Ed Yellin and Jean Fagan Yellin’s book\, \"In Contempt: Defending Free Speech\, Defeating HUAC\,\" with a virtual panel discussion by Julie Herrada\, U-M Library curator of the Joseph A. Labadie Collection\; Howard Brick\, U-M Louis Evans Professor of History\; Erin Ramamurthy\, assistant United States attorney\; and Benjamin Mitchell-Yellin\, associate professor of philosophy at Sam Houston State University and the authors' grandson. Register to receive a Zoom link: https://myumi.ch/RWWPk\n\nThe Yellin family\, which included three young children\, faced a decade of hardship in the 1950s and 60s when they faced the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). The repressive weight of the U.S. government\, caught up in the throes of McCarthyism\, crashed down upon their careers\, their daily household budget\, and their relationships to colleagues\, neighbors\, and their country.\n\nThe authors drew heavily upon materials that are now part of the Labadie Collection for the book\; an online finding aid for the collection will be available soon.\n\nPresented by the U-M Library's Special Collections Research Center and Michigan Publishing.

SUMMARY:Other:Modeling Enzymatic Reactivity with Copper Coordination Complexes
DESCRIPTION:Synthetic models of enzyme intermediates play an important role in evaluating mechanistic hypotheses for critical biochemical reactions. In the first part of my talk\, I will present the synthesis of dicopper coordination complexes as models to understand the reactivity of NO and NO2- at copper enzymes. We discovered that dicopper complex could activate NO or nitrite to generate a unique dicopper (II\,III) oxo nitrosyl species [Cu2(μ-O)(μ-NO)]2+\, which exhibits oxidative and nitrosative reactivity. This new mode of reactivity has important implications in how Nature employs NO and nitrite as electron acceptors for hydrocarbon oxidation. In the second part of my talk\, I will discuss how synthetic models of monocopper oxygenases can be applied in the synthesis of pharmaceutically relevant organic molecules. Inspired by lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases\, we develop a general Cu(II)/Cu(III) platform to activate simple nucleophiles (Nu) toward C-H functionalization. Oxidation of Cu(II)-Nu to Cu(III)-Nu endows the Nu moiety with hydrogen atom transfer and radical capture reactivity. Building on this platform\, we have established a catalytic C-H fluorination method that selectively produces monofluorinated products in an undivided electrochemical cell at room temperature. \n \nShiyu Zhang (Ohio State University)

SUMMARY:Presentation:NII Speaker Series: Mapping the little brain with big magnets: clinical relevance and future directions
DESCRIPTION:Human cerebellar cortex\, with ~ 80% of the surface area of the cerebral cortex\, is anatomically linked with multiple sensory\, motor\, association\, and paralimbic cerebral cortical regions. The majority of fibers that exit cerebellar cortex synapse in dentate nuclei (DN) before reaching extracerebellar structures such as cerebral cortex\, but the functional neuroanatomy of human DN remains largely unmapped. I will address three main questions in this presentation: 1) Why is mapping the intrinsic functional architecture of the DN\, as elucidated by resting state networks\, clinically relevant? 2) How can recent technological advances in neuroimaging research (e.g.\, big magnets\, multichannel array coils and simultaneous multislice-imaging) potentiate the pace of discovery by mapping previously underexplored regions of the cerebellum? 3) What are the future directions\, which can unmask new predictions for basic human functional neuroanatomy and eventually help us build better tools (e.g.\, non-invasive cerebellar stimulation) to serve our patients better? In addition to reviewing the foundational aspects of the neuropsychiatry of the cerebellum\, I will present results from our recent work investigating cerebellar function and dysfunction in autism spectrum disorder\, major depressive disorder\, anxiety disorders and psychosis

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Human Habitat Experience | Climate change\, disasters\, and migration systems: A research agenda
DESCRIPTION:While weather-related disasters happen regularly\, protective infrastructure and building codes usually prevent population loss. Hurricane Katrina’s devastating effects on New Orleans’ levee system and the built environment in other coastline communities in the Gulf of Mexico in 2005 is the exception that proves this rule. Or is it? Empirical studies of hurricane exposure and county-level population change show heterogeneous patterns of post-hurricane population trends. This presentation reviews research on this topic using the weather and population data currently available\, and then considers the data and methods that would allow us to answer key questions about disaster-related migration in the US. Specifically\, which disasters produce out-migration responses? Where have residents who migrated from disaster-affected places resettle? How do migration systems help us predict post-disaster residential mobility? Which types of residents are most likely to move from disaster-affected places? A transdisciplinary and community-engaged research team is necessary to effectively pursue this research agenda and use that knowledge to prepare for and protect against disaster impacts.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Nam Center Colloquium Series | The Cost of Belonging: An Ethnography of Solidarity and Mobility in Beijing’s Koreatown
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This session is planned to be held virtually EST through Zoom. This webinar is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. Once you've registered\, the joining information will be sent to your email.\n \n Register at: https://myumi.ch/517Dp\n\nCo-sponsored by the Department of Sociology.\n \n In the past ten years\, China has rapidly emerged as South Korea’s most important economic partner. With the surge of goods and resources between the two countries\, large waves of Korean migrants have opened small ethnic firms in Beijing’s Koreatown\, turning a once barren wasteland into one of the largest Korean enclaves in the world. The Cost of Belonging: An Ethnography of Solidarity and Mobility in Beijing’s Koreatown is an in-depth ethnographic study that investigates how Korean Chinese cultural brokers\, South Korean entrepreneurs\, and South Korean expats negotiate their class and ethnic identities in their everyday lives in the enclave.\n \n The book engages with the growing literature on diasporic Koreans who have started to form stronger transnational ties with South Korea following the government’s efforts to build a more global Korean polity as a strategy to galvanize its faltering economy in the late 1990s. It diverges from past studies of the Korean diaspora\, however\, by stressing the role of corporate interests and multinational firms in shaping not only inequality on a global scale\, but also notions of ethnic belonging in overseas communities. The book argues that the power of the chaebol extends far beyond shaping labor relations and income inequality. South Korean conglomerates are powerful precisely because they shape spaces of interaction\, and have privileged access to the moral and cultural resources that mold how Koreans view and negotiate their identities. Along these lines\, The Cost of Belonging demonstrates the persisting impact that physical spaces have in shaping the social and economic lives of migrants in this global era.\n \n Sharon J. Yoon is Assistant Professor of Korean Studies at the Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies in the Keough School of Global Affairs at the University of Notre Dame. She received her Ph.D. in sociology from Princeton University and is an ethnographer who has conducted in-depth fieldwork in Korean diasporic communities in Seoul\, Beijing\, and Osaka. Prior to joining the faculty at Notre Dame\, Yoon was a Korea Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow at the James Joo-Jin Kim Center for Korean Studies at the University of Pennsylvania\, a Japan Society for the Promotion of Sciences Postdoctoral Fellow at the Graduate School of Human Sciences at Osaka University\, and an assistant professor in the Department of Korean Studies at the Graduate School of International Studies at Ewha Womans University in Seoul. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation and the Blakemore-Freeman Foundation\, and her work has been published with the International Journal of Sociology\, Korea Observer\, Korean Journal of Sociology\, Journal of Contemporary Asia\, and Politics and Society. In addition to her academic research\, she has worked with think-tanks such as the Korea Economic Institute and the Asan Institute for Policy Studies\, as well as local grassroots organizations in Asia.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.
