SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:WCED Lecture. Decentralized Resistance
DESCRIPTION:Both historically and today\, most acts of resistance to systems of power\, hierarchy\, and exploitation do not take the form of social movements with names\, official-holders\, flags\, rules of order\, headquarters\, and initials (e.g.\, NAACP\, ACLU\, BLM\, AfD). There are at least two reasons\, Scott proposes\, that help explain this fact. First\, historically open resistance for most of the world’s population\, living in undemocratic settings\, is dangerous\, even fatal. When it occurs\, it is an act of desperation. Second\, even in relatively permissive political settings\, the transaction costs of creating formal organizations are often so great that smaller\, informal\, and individual acts of resistance are simpler to pull off and often safer as well. The aggregation of thousands of such acts of resistance (e.g.\, desertion\, squatting\, poaching) may\, over time\, achieve more at a *de facto* level than open\, publicly-declared resistance.\n \nThis talk will examine what might be called “everyday resistance.” Scott will assess whether the term “resistance” even makes sense in this context\; will examine instances of it historically\; will consider both its objectives and the likelihood that they can be achieved in this manner\; and will ask what the consequences for political life and social organization such techniques imply.\n \nJames Scott is the Sterling Professor of Political Science and Professor of Anthropology at Yale University\, and is co-Director of Yale’s Agrarian Studies Program and a mediocre farmer. His research concerns political economy\, comparative agrarian societies\, theories of hegemony and resistance\, peasant politics\, revolution\, Southeast Asia\, theories of class relations\, and anarchism. He is the author of six books\, most recently *Against the Grain: A Deep History of the Earliest Agrarian States* (Yale Press\, 2017)\, *Two Cheers for Anarchism* (Princeton Press\, 2013)\, and *The Art of Not Being Governed: An Anarchist History of Upland Southeast Asia* (Yale Press\, 2008).\n\nThis lecture will be presented in person in 1010 Weiser Hall and on Zoom. Webinar registration required at http://myumi.ch/zwnWd\n\nCo-sponsored by the Conflict & Peace\, Research & Development (CPRD) Group\; Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS)\; and the Departments of Anthropology and Political Science.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Caroline Sinders: Intertwined Intimacy
DESCRIPTION:Intertwined Intimacy is a series of architectural sculptures ruminating on privacy and intimacy\, and how the infrastructure of visible and invisible spaces influences communities\, communications\, and safety. \nThis work stems from artist Caroline Sinders&#039\; previous work combining research driven art and human rights analysis that responds to current technology systems by focusing on how the design of &#039\;infrastructural&#039\; and &#039\;architectural&#039\; spaces\, both online and offline\, impacts safety. By focusing on prototypian futures\, Intertwined Intimacy observes impacts through public infrastructure\, and open\, digital commons inspired by mutual aid and open source technology. To generate this research\, Sinders analyzed how structures\, metaphors and engagements of privacy and security within technology impact mental models The sculptures create a labyrinth\, allowing for a space of reflection and consideration for the audience\, as the sculptures slowly become more and more opaque\, offering areas of hidden solitude and refuge.\nCaroline Sinders is the 2023 Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence. This annual international competition awards one residency per academic year to a visiting artist/designer who proposes to develop a new work in collaboration with members of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design and the University of Michigan community. Learn more about Sinders&#039\; residency and practice in this Q&amp\;A.\nSinders is an award winning critical designer\, researcher\, and artist. She is the founder of human rights and design lab\, Convocation Research + Design. For the past few years\, she has been examining the intersections of artificial intelligence\, intersectional justice\, systems design\, harm\, and politics in digital conversational spaces and technology platforms. She has worked with the Tate Exchange at the Tate Modern\, the United Nations\,the European Commission\, Ars Electronica\, the Harvard Kennedy School and others. Sinders is currently based between London\, UK and New Orleans\, USA.
