SUMMARY:Exhibition:In Focus: Jeanne Gang
DESCRIPTION:Widely acclaimed for her integrative approach to materials\, technology\, and ecological context\, Chicago-based architect Jeanne Gang was selected as a MacArthur Fellow in 2011. Shortly thereafter Gang proposed an ambitious restoration of the Chicago riverfront through a series of small but transformational projects. The WMS Boathouse\, designed by Gang and located north of downtown\, is one such project\, encompassing a field house with state-of-the art training facilities\, a boat storage building\, and a floating dock at the river’s edge. Completed in 2013\, the 22\,000-square-foot boathouse is the city’s premier rowing center\, serving a range of public rowing clubs\, many of whose amateur athletes come from the city’s underserved communities.\n\nThis installation showcases dynamic exterior and interior sketches of the complex—recently acquired by UMMA—depicting the distinctive rhythmic contours of the roof\, derived from studies of rowers in motion\, and the open\, angular\, and light-filled spaces within.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Manuel Álvarez Bravo: Mexico’s Poet of Light
DESCRIPTION:Manuel Álvarez Bravo spent nearly his entire career photographing his native Mexico. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. Throughout\, the presence of light as a wondrous metaphor and revealer of life animates even the emptiest and most silent of Álvarez Bravo’s scenes.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Siebren Versteeg: LIKE II (2016)
DESCRIPTION:In Siebren Versteeg’s LIKE II (2016)\, a computer painting program creates a composition using a continuously changing algorithm\, and then runs a periodic Google search to find a matching image online. Every sixty seconds\, the painting made by the computer is uploaded to Google’s “search by image” feature\, and images that most closely match the composition are then downloaded and displayed.\n\nThe notion of abstraction plays a central role in this work. Throughout modernity\, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. LIKE II inverts this ambition\, finding the reality hidden within pure abstraction. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment\, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. Versteeg says\, “As the nature of the images presented by the work is random\, the artist assumes both all and no responsibility for their presence and content.”\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

DESCRIPTION:The City of Ann Arbor mayor's office is hosting the 16th annual Mayor's Green Fair on Main Street Friday\, June 10\, 6–9 p.m. to celebrate our community's environmental leadership as exhibited by citizens\, nonprofits\, government and businesses. \n\nAnn Arbor's downtown Main Street will be closed to car traffic between Huron and William streets\, remaining open for pedestrians\, Green Fair guests and displays of environmental information\, \"green\" products\, live music and general enjoyment of the urban outdoor environment. Information\, entertainment and hands-on activities for all ages will be provided. Live music will be performed by The Glen Levens\, and local vendors will sell organic food on Liberty Street near Main Street.\n\nThe Green Fair hosts three related events:\n\n​The Environmental Leaders Area showcases environmental nonprofit organizations\, government agencies and participating businesses that have earned the \"WasteKnot*\" partners and/or Community Partners for Clean Streams designation from Washtenaw County. Many of the exhibit areas will provide information and host hands-on activities for all ages\, such as environmental information\, crafts and live birds of prey demonstrations.\n\nThe Clean Energy Expo\, coordinated by the local nonprofit organization Clean Energy Coalition\, provides a forum for innovative energy-saving designs and actions\, including displays of alternative fuel vehicles\, demonstrations of green building materials\, solar energy installations\, renewable energy installations and more!\n\nThe Green Commute Area\, sponsored by the getDowntown Program\, showcases a variety of ordinary and innovative sustainable transportation choices — ranging from ArborBike\, the new bike share program for Ann Arbor\, to AAATA's hybrid buses and Zipcars. DESCRIPTION:Josh White Jr. describes himself as a secular\, folk/blues\, pop\, jazz vocalist\, guitarist\, songwriter\, actor\, adult and children's concert performer and recording artist\, teacher\, and social activist. He carries forward the musical legacy of his father\, who brought a taste of the blues to New York's folk scene and then to the whole world in the 1930s and 1940s. Josh Jr. grew up performing on stage with his father\, and he can take you back to personal encounters with the likes of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt\, Langston Hughes\, Paul Robeson\, Bojangles\, Leadbelly\, Joe Louis\, Woody Guthrie\, Billie Holiday\, Pete Seeger\, Dorothy Gish\, Burl Ives\, Odetta\, Miriam Makeba\, and Nina Simone. He has continued to record music ranging from folk to country to kids' music\, and his latest\, \"Tuning for the Blues\,\" delved into some classics of the blues genre. Josh White Jr. is a longtime resident of southeastern Michigan and a real local resource.

DESCRIPTION:This show is a series of oil portraits by New Jersey based artist Janet Boltax of individuals who are 90 years of age and over. They are accompanied by excerpts of interviews with each person about their life and how they are coping with the aging process. Boltax is primarily a portrait painter who also does printmaking and mixed media. She teaches portrait painting\, color theory and composition at the Montclair Museum\, Montclair\, New Jersey\, and also works as a copy writer.

Criner works out of Chicago\, and teaches at Northeastern Illinois University.
