SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:DCMB / CCMB Weekly Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nAccurately predicting the onset of disease is a major challenge in clinical medicine because the genesis of diseases is generally a complex and dynamic process. Wearable sensor technologies provide an unprecedented opportunity to collect physiological data at orders of magnitude higher high time-resolution than conventional clinical practice. This provides unprecedented opportunities for investigating the dynamics of disease processes and may usher in a new era of real-time\, personalized medicine. We have proposed the potential of real-time\, continuously measured physiological data as a non-invasive\, “digital biomarker” approach for detecting the earliest stages in transition to a disease state. In this talk\, I will describe an example of our interdisciplinary team’s work on this topic that uses the early detection and possible prediction of febrile (i.e.\, fever-associated) adverse events in cancer events as an important application.\n\nClinical Interests\nProstate Cancer\, General Oncology\, Biomarkers in Oncology\nResearch Interests\n•	Biology of circulating\, extracellular nucleic acids and translational applications\n•	Developing next generation approaches for early detection and monitoring of cancer\n•	Bioinformatics and computational biology\, high-throughput sequencing\n•	New technologies to enable cancer detection and monitoring\n\nhttps://umich-health.zoom.us/j/93929606089?pwd=SHh6R1FOQm8xMThRemdxTEFMWWpVdz09

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Technology Adoption\, Innovation\, and Inequality in a Global World.
DESCRIPTION:Economic Growth since roughly the mid 90s is characterized by i) declining cross-country inequality\, ii) rising within-country inequality\, and iii) overall weak growth in advanced economies. These growth patterns were accompanied by increasing degrees of market integration between advanced economies and emerging markets. I provide a unifying explanation for these facts by developing a simple theory of long-run growth that focuses on the interaction of innovation and technology adoption. I model both activities as skill-intensive\, and study how integration with emerging markets shapes the returns to innovation vis-a-vis technology adoption. Technology adoption in emerging markets boosts the development of frontier technology in advanced economies and induces a rising skill premium\, which in turn leads to less domestic technology adoption. When ideas are getting harder to find\, the growth drag from reduced domestic adoption dominates positive innovation effects\, explaining slow TFP growth and stagnant wages for non-college workers in advanced economies. Cross-sectional evidence from German micro data\, which leverages regional heterogeneity in specialization in innovation vs production together with the fall of the Iron Curtain\, corroborates the key mechanism.
