SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Change it Up!©
DESCRIPTION:Change It Up!© brings bystander intervention skills to students for the purpose of building supportive and respectful communities. Change It Up! is based on a nationally recognized five-step bystander intervention model that develops students’ skills and confidence when intervening in situations that negatively impact campus climate. This workshop explores how students’ identities and experiences impact their interactions inside and outside of the classroom. Through interactive theater\, students apply the five steps to real-life scenarios and have an opportunity to practice and discuss how they can leverage these skills within their campus communities.\nLearning Objectives:\n\nGain an understanding of what it means to be a bystander and factors that influence intervention\nGain multiple strategies to intervene and disrupt harm\, such as microaggressions\, bias incidents\, stereotyping\, sexual harassment\, etc.\nAct as an ally and educator\, especially when you hold privilege and power and witness harm to those who do not hold privilege and power\nLearn how to receive and respond to feedback about harm you caused\, even if unintentional\n\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Survival of the Friendliest
DESCRIPTION:The only way to understand what it is to be human is to know what it is like to be not human. In this talk we will explore the minds of our closest relatives\; bonobos and chimpanzees\, and dogs – our closest friend. We will look at how these animals help us understand what makes us human\, and how our minds came to be. We will arrive at the idea that it was friendliness that powerfully shaped both the bodies and minds of bonobos and dogs during their evolution. We will then consider if our own species evolved due to selection for friendliness. I will argue that comparing our friendly nature to other animals solves the paradox of human kindness and cruelty and points to the need for cross-group friendships to encourage a friendlier future.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Department of Aerospace Engineering Seminar Series: Active Aeroelasticity and Structures Research Laboratory (A2SRL)
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Nathan Falkiewicz\n\nMIT Lincoln Laboratory operates a number of research aircraft through its Flight Test Facility\, including two aircraft as part of a long-running program with the US Air Force. Due to various factors\, the current platforms (a Gulfstream II and an HU-25) are planned to be replaced by two Gulfstream IV business jets. As such\, MIT Lincoln Laboratory has been undergoing an extensive engineering design and analysis effort to transform these two aircraft from their business jet configurations into research test beds to support the needs of the program. A major aspect of the modification is the addition of hard points for wing stores carriage. As such\, accurate flutter prediction is of significant importance to ensure safe operation of the aircraft over a large variety of wing store configurations. The talk will begin with an overview of the program and associated challenges. A detailed discussion of the flutter work will be provided\, including: comparison of flutter results using panel method and CFD- based aerodynamics\, CFD-based reduced-order flutter modeling discussion and results\, and comparison against flight flutter test data. The talk will conclude with a summary and the next steps in the analysis and certification efforts.
