SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Towards a digital lung for medical research and applications
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nRespiratory infections and chronic diseases have been among the top causes of death worldwide for decades\, killing over 8 million people annually. Current diagnostic methods for respiratory diseases result in late diagnosis and high rates of underdiagnosis. Further\, the wide variability in the patient response to treatment challenges population-based therapies. Personalized medicine arises as a promising alternative to standard practice\, but it relies on expensive laboratory and testing infrastructure not available worldwide. This motivates the creation of computational models of the human lungs for in silico research and applications.\n\nIn this talk\, I will present our group's efforts to construct computational models of the lung for medical research and applications. I will review how computer simulations of alveolar structures informed by micro-computed tomography can change our current understanding of the forces acting on the lung extracellular matrix (ECM). Further\, I will discuss a class of microstructurally informed models for predicting the lung tissue response and how they can capture mechanical changes in lung mechanics triggered by ECM remodeling. Finally\, I will show our current work on creating personalized virtual lungs and how we can use them to simulate the response of patients under respiratory failure that are connected to mechanical ventilation.\n\nBio:\nDaniel E. Hurtado is an associate professor with the School of Engineering at PUC Chile\, and a visiting professor at the Institute for Medical Engineering and Science at MIT. He leads the Computational Medicine Group\, an interdisciplinary team that focuses on the creation of personalized computational replicas of the human lungs\, with applications in the study of mechanical ventilation and early diagnosis of pulmonary diseases. His work also involves the development of wearable respiratory systems to monitor breathing in athletes and hospital patients. \n\nProf. Hurtado received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the California Institute of Technology as a Fulbright fellow. His thesis work made him the recipient of the Robert J. Melosh Medal\, presented by Duke University. In 2018\, the World Economic Forum selected him as one of the 50 most influential young scientists worldwide under 40 years old for his contributions in research and innovation in biomedical engineering. He is also an elected member for the World Council of Biomechanics.\n\nZoom:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/91375430500

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Haas Brothers: Merging Fantasy
DESCRIPTION:Experience the world of boundary-defying artist designers the Haas Brothers\, Simon and Nikolai Haas\, as they discuss their clever\, imaginative\, and fantasy-filled creations. Playful and at times irreverent\, they explore aesthetic themes related to nature\, science fiction\, sexuality\, and psychedelia. As their practice has developed\, they moved from thinking about functionality first to “start[ing] with emotional content\,” Simon stated. Their inventive use of materials ranges from copper\, porcelain and fur\, to technical resins and polyurethane. Since founding the Haas Brothers in 2010\, twin brothers Nikolai and Simon have spurned arbitrary artistic boundaries and hierarchies\, creating a playful and provocative world that merges art\, fashion\, film\, music\, and design. \nIn 2013\, The Haas Brothers began to collaborate with Monkeybiz\, a South African women&#039\;s collective known for their beadwork and who also have branded themselves the Haas Sisters. The Haas Brothers have also established a partnership with a group of women from Lost Hills\, California\, a small agricultural town with limited employment opportunities for women to facilitate the opportunity for the women to learn beadwork skills and now employ them for their beadwork creations.\nTheir first solo museum show opened in Miami Beach at the Bass Museum of Art in 2019 and their work is held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, and the Rhode Island School of Design Museum. In 2019\, they were the recipients of the Arison Award given by the YoungArts Foundation. Most recently\, their exhibition\, Constant Carnival: The Haas Brothers in Context\, was on view at the Katonah Museum of Art in 2022. They are represented by Marianne Boesky Gallery in New York\, and they live and work in Los Angeles.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Reading and Q&A with Raquel Gutiérrez
DESCRIPTION:Login here (no pre-registration needed): https://tinyurl.com/ZellWriters\n\nZell Visiting Writers Series readings and Q&As are free and open to the public\, and will be offered both virtually (via Zoom) and in person (in UMMA's Stern Auditorium). Seats are offered on a first come\, first served basis\; please arrive early to secure a spot. Please contact asbates@umich.edu with any questions or accommodation needs.\n\n\nRaquel Gutiérrez is an arts critic/writer\, poet and educator. Born and raised in Los Angeles Gutiérrez credits the queer and feminist DIY post-punk 'zine culture of the 1990s plus Los Angeles County and Getty paid arts internships with introducing her/them to the various vibrant art & music scenes and communities throughout Southern California. Gutiérrez is a 2021 recipient of the Rabkin Prize in Arts Journalism\, as well as a 2017 recipient of the The Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant. Her/Their writing has recently appeared in or is forthcoming in *Art In America*\, NPR Music\, *Places Journal*\, and *The Georgia Review*. Gutiérrez teaches in the Oregon State University-Cascades Low Residency Creative Writing MFA Program. Gutiérrez calls Tucson\, Arizona home.\n\nPart butch memoir\, part ekphrastic travel diary\, part queer family tree\, Raquel Gutiérrez’s debut essay collection *Brown Neon* (Coffee House Press\, 2022) considers what it means to be a Latinx artist during the Trump era\, and gleans insight from the sediment of land and relationships. For Gutiérrez\, terrain is essential to understanding that no story\, no matter how personal\, is separate from the space where it unfolds. Whether contemplating the value of adobe as both vernacular architecture and commodified art object\, highlighting the feminist wounding and transphobic apparitions haunting the multi-generational lesbian social fabric\, or recalling a failed romance\, Gutiérrez traverses complex questions of gender\, class\, identity\, and citizenship with curiosity and nuance.\n\n\nFor any questions about the event or to share accommodation needs\, please email asbates@umich.edu-- we are eager to help ensure that this event is inclusive to you. The building\, event space\, and restrooms are wheelchair accessible. Diaper changing tables are available in nearby restrooms. Gender-inclusive restrooms are available on the second floor of the Museum\, accessible via the stairs\, or in nearby Hatcher Graduate Library (Floors 3\, 4\, 5\, and 6). The Hatcher Library also offers a reflection room (4th Floor South Stacks)\, and a lactation room (Room 13W\, an anteroom to the basement women's staff restroom\, or Room 108B\, an anteroom of the first floor women's restroom). ASL interpreters and CART services at in-person events are available upon request\; please email asbates@umich.edu at least two weeks prior to the event\, whenever possible\, to allow time to arrange services.\n\nU-M employees with a U-M parking permit may use the Church Street Parking Structure (525 Church St.\, Ann Arbor) or the Thompson Parking Structure (500 Thompson St.\, Ann Arbor).
