SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Quantum Field Theory Tools for Gravitational Wave Science
DESCRIPTION:Future gravitational wave detectors will map out and characterize every binary merger in the history of the universe. The possibilities for new and unexpected scientific discoveries from this wealth of data is staggering\, but hinges crucially on complementary advances in our theoretical understanding of the nature of gravitational wave sources. However\, the path from Einstein’s equation to precision binary dynamics is notoriously difficult\, and conventional methods may not scale to the demands of future detectors. I will describe our recent efforts in solving the relativistic two-body problem using modern tools from quantum field theory.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture - Társilo Girona\, University of Alaska Fairbanks
DESCRIPTION:Identifying the observables that warn of volcanic unrest and eruptions is one of the greatest challenges in natural hazard management. An important observable is the release of heat through volcano surfaces\, which represents a major energy source at quiescent volcanoes.  However\, many questions remain open: Is there a direct correlation between surface heat emissions and the subsurface processes preceding volcanic eruptions? To what extent are volcanic eruptions preceded by an enhancement of the surface heat emissions? In this talk\, I will address these questions using different volcanoes as case studies\, including Nyiragongo (Congo) and Cumbre Vieja (La Palma\, Spain)\, two of the most socially impactful volcanoes in 2021.

SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:\"Mending\" RC Art Gallery Exhibit Reception
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of selected works by Jeanne Bieri.\nJanuary 21 - March 18\, 2022 \nInspired by women who worked with and communicated in quilts\, Mending is an exhibit that blends the deeply personal stories of our lives as individuals with the universal language of quilts and blankets. Mending is an ode to the art of the hand stitch\; as Bieri’s work brings layers and patterns to army blankets and recycled materials\, she is creating a story of making\, restructuring\, and mending. Through meticulous hand work and circulating patterns\, Jeanne joins together the disparate elements of her work. The process of restoring and saving discarded elements and preserving the unique histories of the materials found in the tactile surfaces remain an inspiration in her daily work practice.\n\nCommunicating a sense of unity\, sturdiness\, and fusion through its manipulation of textiles and hand stitching\, Mending can be viewed in the RC Art Gallery in East Quad from January 21 through March 18\, 2022. \n\nJeannes's reception will take place at the RC Art Gallery on February 11\, 4-6 pm.\n\nAbout the artist:\nJeanne earned her MFA in Painting from Wayne State University and later taught at U-M Dearborn. Her work has been exhibited throughout Michigan and the Midwest with career highlights including a Kresge Fellowship in 2017 and a Michigan Council for the Arts Grant in 2019.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CSAS Lecture | Market Futures: On Capital and Resistance in India Adda\, Davos
DESCRIPTION:Please register in advance for this Zoom event. Registration is here: https://myumi.ch/1nnA8\n\nThe spectacular assembly of the global elite at the World Economic Forum\, Davos is a brief moment when the powerful networks of capital become visible. It is here we witness the “India Adda”\, an investment pavilion where India performs its cultural difference—adda\, a place or assembly of people—as a modern\, investor-friendly India\, albeit an India rooted in tradition. Taking Adda\, Davos as a global theatre of commerce\, I address the shifting state-capital power dynamics in post-liberalization India. I specifically focus on how the language of anti-colonial resistance came to be incorporated in the service of Indian capital in the world of free markets.\n \n Ravinder Kaur is a historian of contemporary India. She is Associate Professor of Modern South Asian Studies at the University of Copenhagen. Her most recent work is “Brand New Nation: Capitalist Dreams and Nationalist Designs in Twenty-First-Century India” (Stanford University Press\, 2020 and Harper Collins\, 2021).\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.
