SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIChE Presents Black History Month Guest Speaker: Dr. Levi Thompson
DESCRIPTION:Please join us next Thursday\, February 23rd for AIChE's Black History Month event to celebrate Black excellence in Chemical Engineering and discuss the barriers to inclusion of Black communities in Engineering fields. Dr. Levi Thompson will virtually join us to discuss his journey through Chemical Engineering and topics regarding Black identity in Chemical Engineering. Dr. Thompson received his Ph.D. from Michigan and remained to be a professor of Chemical Engineering for multiple years. He is currently the Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Delaware and has agreed to share his unique perspectives on Engineering education.\n\nThis event will be catered by a local black-owned business. Lunch will be served from 11:30am - 12:20pm in the EECS Atrium. This is followed by Dr. Thompson's talk from 12:30pm - 1:20pm in EECS 1500. You must attend the talk in order to get lunch\, we will be taking attendance to enforce this. NOTE: This event takes the place of our normal weekly luncheon and food will be served earlier than a normal week.\n\nAlso\, please note that everyone is welcome to attend this event! You DO NOT need to be a member of AIChE or a Chemical Engineering major to attend. We hope to have attendance from students all across the college\, so be sure to bring your friends! SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Thursday Lecture Series | Border Crossings: Transnational and Exophonic Voices in Contemporary Japanese Literature
DESCRIPTION:If you wish to attend via Zoom\, please register at http://myumi.ch/XVA9x\n\nSince the late 1980s\, transnational and exophonic authors have become an increasingly prominent feature of contemporary Japanese literature. These works\, often referred to in both commercial publishing and research as “border-crossing literature\,” are varied in subject and style\, but are loosely connected through a shared concern with the relationship between language and the self. This lecture will consider the framework that has been used to discuss border-crossing works in the broader context of Japanese literature\, as well as how that framework is changing as the field continues to grow and diversify.\n \n Gregory Khezrnejat is an Associate Professor of Modern Japanese Literature at the Hosei University Faculty of Global and Interdisciplinary Studies. His research is focused on transnational elements of modern and contemporary Japanese literature as well as second-language authorship. In 2021\, his debut novel *Kamogawa Runner* was awarded the Kyoto Literature Award. His most recent work\, *Kaikonchi*\, was published in the November 2022 issue of the literary journal *Gunzō*.\n \n This lecture is made possible with the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Starting Your Authorship Journey
DESCRIPTION:\nPublication is one of the essential methods a scholar uses to disseminate their work\, but many graduate students and postdoctoral fellows have little or no prior experience with authorship. In this workshop\, we will share best practices for scholarly authorship\, provide an overview of the phases of authorship\, and discuss the questions that often arise in the publication process. Given that graduate students and postdoctoral fellows often co-author with mentors and peers\, we will also share resources for discussing co-authorship with others. The focus will be on scholarly publication rather than other forms of publication\, such as fiction writing\, creative writing\, etc. You will hear from staff experts and faculty leaders\, including associate deans and graduate chairs:\n\nJacqueline Jeruss\, professor of surgery and the director of the University of Michigan Breast Care Center\nDavid Sept\, Rackham associate dean of physical sciences and engineering and professor of biomedical engineering\nMark Dincecco\, associate professor and graduate chair of political science\nArthur Verhoogt\, Rackham associate dean of humanities and arts and professor of classics\n\nThis workshop is designed for University of Michigan master’s students\, doctoral students\, and postdoctoral fellows. For faculty and staff\, please contact rackhampdeworkshops@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/NkMVk.\n\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Engaged Mentoring Workshop Series (February 22 & 23\, 2023)
DESCRIPTION:The \"Engaged Mentoring\" workshop is for mentors of research trainees at any stage of training. This workshop is an evidence-based\, interactive approach designed to elevate mentoring skills for engaging in productive\, culturally responsive research mentoring relationships. These skills will support the success of both mentors and mentees. This training is responsive to the new NIGMS guidelines regarding the preparation of mentors involved in training grants.\n\n\nThis workshop aims to accelerate the process of becoming an effective research mentor by providing mentors with an intellectual framework\, an opportunity to experiment with various methods\, and a forum in which to solve mentoring dilemmas with the help of their peers. By the end of the workshop\, mentors will have articulated their style and philosophy of mentoring and have a toolbox of strategies for approaching difficult mentoring situations. This series is adapted from the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER) \"Entering Mentoring\" curriculum (Pfund\, Branchaw\, and Handelsman\, 2014) and \"Entering Research\" (Branchaw\, Butz\, & Smith\, 2019) and adapted with permission from W.H. Freeman/Macmillan Learning.\nRegister for ALL sessions within this series. The expectation is that participants will make every effort to attend both sessions in the workshop to facilitate cohort discussions. The sessions will take place in person. \nPart I: Wednesday Feb 22\, 8am-12pm THSL 2994Part II: Thursday Feb 23\, 1-5pm\, THSL 2955There will be opportunities to attend this workshop in March and April (dates TBD) for those that cannot make the February dates.
