SUMMARY:Other:Author's Forum Presents: Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and Its Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Heather Ann Thompson (U-M Professor of Afroamerican and African Studies\, and History) reads from her Pulitzer Prize-winning book Blood in the Water\, followed by a conversation with Angela Dillard (U-M Professor of Afroamerican and African Studies) and then audience Q & A and book sale & signing.\n\nAbout the book:\nOn September 9\, 1971\, nearly 1\,300 prisoners took over the Attica Correctional Facility in upstate New York to protest years of mistreatment. Holding guards and civilian employees hostage\, the prisoners negotiated with officials for improved conditions during the four long days and nights that followed. \n\nOn September 13\, the state abruptly sent hundreds of heavily armed troopers and correction officers to retake the prison by force. Their gunfire killed thirty-nine men—hostages as well as prisoners—and severely wounded more than one hundred others. In the ensuing hours\, weeks\, and months\, troopers and officers brutally retaliated against the prisoners. And\, ultimately\, New York State authorities prosecuted only the prisoners\, never once bringing charges against the officials involved in the retaking and its aftermath and neglecting to provide support to the survivors and the families of the men who had been killed.\n \nDrawing from more than a decade of extensive research\, historian Heather Ann Thompson sheds new light on every aspect of the uprising and its legacy\, giving voice to all those who took part in this forty-five-year fight for justice: prisoners\, former hostages\, families of the victims\, lawyers and judges\, and state officials and members of law enforcement. Blood in the Water is the searing and indelible account of one of the most important civil rights stories of the last century.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Ethical\, Legal\, and Social Implications of Genetics and Newborn Screening
DESCRIPTION:Advances in prenatal screening and genetic manipulation have the potential to all but eliminate birth defects and genetic disorders. For example\, prenatal genetic testing in Iceland has almost completely erased incidents of down’s syndrome in newborns. This has led to growing concerns over creating designer babies\, hyperbole about the potential for a new era of eugenics\, and broader questions about whether science is outstripping societal or ethical norms in regards to human genetic diversity.\n\nJoin Joselin Linder\, author of “The Family Gene”\, and Jodyn Platt\, assistant professor in the U-M Medical School in a panel discussion about the ethical\, legal\, and social implications of genetics and newborn screening. The conversation will be moderated by Kayte Spector-Bagdady\, assistant professor in the U-M Medical School and chief of the research ethics service in the Center for Bioethics and Social Sciences in Medicine.

SUMMARY:Presentation:UM Psychology Community Talk with Dr. Allison Earl
DESCRIPTION:Is the news fake and the facts alternative? Why people hear what they want to hear and how to effectively bridge the divide\n\nAbstract:\nFake news is only fake to those who don’t believe it. In other words\, what we already think can color how we evaluate new persuasive messages\, particularly about topics in which we are deeply invested (e.g.\, gun control\, climate change\, health recommendations). This talk will explore some common pitfalls when evaluating information about which we already have opinions\, as well as why we are so motivated to feel right (even when we may not be)\, and will conclude with some strategies for reducing these biases.\n \n\nBio:\nDr. Allison Earl is an Assistant Professor of Psychology and Director of the Health\, Attitudes\, and Influence Lab (HAILab) at the University of Michigan. Her research focuses primarily on what information people approach or avoid – and why – and how these tendencies impact what we think\, feel\, and do.
