SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Survivors Saving Survivors: Photographing the Ukrainian Refugee Experience in Poland
DESCRIPTION:In April and June 2022\, at the invitation of JCC Krakow\, Chuck Fishman traveled to Poland to document the JCC and the Jewish community’s commitment to helping Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war-torn country. What he witnessed and captured in a series of gripping photographs is *tikkun olam*\, a central concept in Judaism that denotes activities that repair and improve the world we live in. The exhibit shifts the lens away from the horror the refugees have endured to focus instead on human goodness and how it can overcome lingering evil.\n\nIn his 45-year career\, freelance photographer Chuck Fishman has focused on social and political issues with a strong humanistic concern. His work on Jewish life in Poland\, begun in 1975\, continues to the present day. Fishman’s work has been extensively published\, exhibited\, and collected worldwide\, and has earned him prestigious World Press Photo Foundation medals four times. His photographs have appeared on the covers of *Time*\, *Life*\, *Fortune*\, *Newsweek*\, *The London Sunday Times*\, *The Economist*\, and numerous others. Fishman’s work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery\, the United Nations POLIN: The Museum of the History of Polish Jews\, and the Stanford University and New York Public Libraries\, to name a few\, as well as private and corporate collections.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at weisercenter@umich.edu. DESCRIPTION:Trace how astronomy was developed\, studied\, and disseminated through the centuries\, from 1500 BCE to the Renaissance. On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:LOCATING THEOREMS OF DIFFERENTIAL INCLUSIONS GOVERNED BY MAXIMALLY MONOTONE OPERATORS
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we will discuss  the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of differential inclusions governed by maximally monotone operators. In the case where the LaSalle’s invariance principle is inconclusive\, we provide a refined version of the invariance principle theorem. This result derives from the problem of locating the ω-limit set of a bounded solution of the dynamic. In addition\, we propose an extension of LaSalle’s invariance principle\, which allows us to give a sharper location of the ω-limit set. The provided results are given in terms of nonsmooth Lyapunov pair-type functions.  We  will conclude this presentation by applying our results to  an important  second-order gradient-like dissipative dynamical system with Hessian-driven damping called (DIN) by Alvarez et and his collaborators.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. DESCRIPTION:The *27th Annual Exhibition of Artists in Michigan Prisons* showcases the hard work and talents of artists incarcerated in Michigan prisons. \n\nThe work is by men and women from all 25 state prisons in both the upper and the lower peninsulas: 24 men’s prisons and 1 women’s prison. \n\nThis year there are 645 works in two and three dimensions\, including portraits\, tattoo imagery\, landscapes\, fantasy\, and wildlife as well as images about incarceration and visions that are entirely new. \n\nWe invite you to enjoy the work and\, if you like\, make a purchase. Walters is a Creative Capital Awardee in literary nonfiction and the author of a book of prose\, *Multiply/Divide: On the American Real and Surreal* (Sarabande Books\, 2015)\, named a best book of the year by *Buzzfeed*\, *Flavorwire*\, *Literary Hub*\, *The Root*\, *Huffington Post*\, and others. She is also the author of two books of poems\, *Troy\, Michigan* (Futurepoem\, 2014) and *Longer I Wait\, More You Love Me*. Her work has been published in BOMB\, *The Yale Review*\, *The Iowa Review*\, *Lapham’s Quarterly*\, *Full Bleed*\, and *Harper’s*\, among many others. Her current projects address intersections between writing and design. climate change and its reverberations\, class and racial disquietude in the industrial Midwest\, and organic forms in the essay.\n\nA recipient of fellowships from NYFA\, the Ford Foundation\, and the Smithsonian Institute\, she has a broad history of engagements with writing in and about performative contexts. She was artist-in-residence at BRIClab in Brooklyn\, where she worked on developing the book for the opera\, Golden Motors with Derek Bermel. Their lyrical work has been performed widely\, including at Carnegie Hall\, Joe’s Pub\, Louisiana Museum for Moderne Kunst in Denmark\, The Institute for Advanced Study\, and the Pittsburgh Symphony. In a sustained collaboration with curator Elyse Nelson\, Walters co-curated the exhibition\, Fictions of Emancipation: Carpeaux Recast\, at The Met\, on view from March 10\, 2022 to March 5\, 2023. It is the first exhibition at The Met to examine Western sculpture in relation to the histories of transatlantic slavery\, colonialism\, and empire. Together they have edited a collection of essays as a companion to the show\, titled *Fictions of Emancipation: Reconsidering Carpeaux’s Why Born Enslaved!* (The Met/Yale University Press).\n\nWalters holds a MFA/PHD in Poetry and Literature from Cornell University\, and is the former Associate Dean of Art and Design History and Theory at Parsons\, The New School.
