SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Chair's Distinguished Lecture: Optical Interactions with High-Speed Flows: From Hypersonic Boundary Layers to Aero-Optics
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Chris Limbach\nAssistant Professor\nDepartment of Aerospace Engineering\nTexas A&M University \n\nAdvances in high-energy and high repetition rate laser architectures have enabled new diagnostic approaches that can provide crucial insight into the hypersonic flow environment and data for model validation and improvement\, especially for studies of complex\, multi-dimensional shock-dominated flows and high-temperature thermochemistry. The first part of the seminar will focus on two hypersonic diagnostic techniques: femtosecond laser electronic excitation tagging and burst-mode filtered Rayleigh scattering. Both approaches are applied to study the wake flow and transition behind a boundary layer trip array in the Texas A&M actively controlled expansion tunnel at Mach 6. Then\, preliminary measurements in a Mach 10 expansion tunnel will serve to highlight ongoing integration of optical and burst-mode laser diagnostics with impulse facilities\, along with emerging diagnostic approaches.\n\nThe second part of the talk will feature aero-optics and the physics of light propagation through terrestrial\, hypersonic\, and rarefied flow environments. A new concept for space propulsion based on combined laser and atomic beam self-guiding will be presented\, including recent theoretical and numerical results that demonstrate beam propagation beyond the diffraction limit. The talk will conclude by describing progress toward the realization of optomechanical self-guiding in small-scale experiments.\n\nAbout the speaker...\nDr. Chris Limbach was born in Milwaukee\, Wisconsin and graduated from the University of Arizona in 2009 with Bachelor’s degrees in Engineering Physics and Astronomy. He received his doctorate in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Princeton University in 2015 where he studied energy deposition by nanosecond and femtosecond pulsed lasers with applications to hypersonic measurement and flow control. After holding a Research Scientist position at Colorado State University from 2016-2017\, he joined Texas A&M University (TAMU) as an Assistant Professor of Aerospace Engineering in 2017 where he founded and now directs the Laser Diagnostics and Plasma Devices Laboratory (LDPDL). In 2017 he also received the Nakayama Award for Fluid Measurement and Visualization and in 2018 and 2019 was named a NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts Program Fellow.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Discussion with Dr. Feranmi Okanlami: Race\, Place and Ability
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Feranmi Okanlami\, Director of Student Accessibility and Accommodation Services\, will lead a discussion that centers on the intersection of Race\, Ability and the process of finding one’s Place or sense of belonging. Through sharing his own personal experiences of living with disabilities and advocating for more robust and inclusive services for university students living with disabilities\, Dr. Okanlami will push participants to think critically about what a truly inclusive and accessible university culture looks like\, and will invite them to move away just from theorizing about change\, toward enacting the changes they would like to see.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Outlook for Automation of Road Transportation Systems
DESCRIPTION:Although media stories have for the past decade been hailing the imminent availability of vehicles that will completely take over the driving task from humans\, reality will be far more prosaic. The coming decades will see increasingly wide availability of driving assistance systems that operate under continuous supervision of human drivers to enhance safety and driving comfort and convenience. The automated driving systems that perform the complete dynamic driving task are likely to be limited to specific commercial fleet applications\, under tightly constrained geographic and operational conditions\, and with remote human assistance\, for the foreseeable future. This lecture will explain the reasoning behind these predictions based on the presenter’s nearly fifty years of experience working on automated driving technology and planning issues.\nThe challenges to deployment of automation systems that can replace human drivers will be explained from multiple perspectives\, based on the presenter’s experience developing automated driving systems\, evaluating their transportation system impacts\, and assisting regulators in assessing their safety. These challenges will be discussed in terms of:\n-	The high safety baseline set by human driving in today’s safety statistics\;\n-	The technological challenges in environment perception\, prediction of actions of other road users\, cyber-security and software safety verification and validation\;\n-	The economic challenges posed by high costs of developing the technology\, extending it to new locations and operating conditions\, and equipping and maintaining the vehicles\;\n-	The human factors and public perception challenges of accurately informing the public about the capabilities and limitations of the automation technology\;\n-	The combined technological and institutional challenges of producing a robust safety case to prove adequate safety of an automated driving system\;\n-	The natural inertia inherent in capital-intensive industries such as motor vehicles and civil infrastructure\, in contrast to Silicon Valley information technology.
