SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Machine Learning in Drug Development
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nAn undesirable side effect of drugs are cardiac arrhythmias\, in particular a condition called torsades de pointes. Current paradigms for drug safety evaluation are costly\, lengthy\, and conservative\, and impede efficient drug development. Here we combine multiscale experiment and simulation\, high-performance computing\, and machine learning to create an easy-to-use risk assessment diagram to quickly and reliable stratify the pro-arrhythmic potential of new and existing drugs. We capitalize on recent developments in machine learning and integrate information across ten orders of magnitude in space and time to provide a holistic picture of the effects of drugs\, either individually or in combination with other drugs. We show\, both experimentally and computationally\, that drug-induced arrhythmias are dominated by the interplay of two currents with opposing effects: the rapid delayed rectifier potassium current and the L-type calcium current. Using Gaussian process classification\, we create a classifier that stratifies safe and arrhythmic domains for any combinations of these two currents. We demonstrate that our classifier correctly identifies the risk categories of 23 common drugs\, exclusively on the basis of their concentrations at 50% current block. Our study shapes the way towards establishing science-based criteria to accelerate drug development\, design safer drugs\, and reduce heart rhythm disorders.\nBio:\nEllen Kuhl is the Walter B. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar: Light and dark side of the force: Marine bivalve-algal photosymbiosis in light gradients
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nPhotosymbiotic associations between heterotrophic hosts and photosynthetic algae play crucial roles in maintaining the trophic and structural integrity of marine ecosystems. This relationship has independently evolved in diverse eukaryotic lineages including sponges\, corals\, and bivalves. However\, the basic biology of photosymbioses and their evolutionary implications are not well-understood. In this talk\, I will use a representative photosymbiotic bivalve group to investigate the partners’ ecological and molecular adaptation to the photosymbiotic lifestyle. I will demonstrate that light availability play an important role in shaping the hosts’ morphological adaptation\, energy update\, symbiont composition\, and genomic evolution.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Positive Links Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, February 17\, 2022 \n4:00-5:00 p.m. ET \nFree and open to the public\, registration required: https://positiveorgs.bus.umich.edu/events/management-as-a-calling/\n\nPositive Links: \n\nThe Positive Links Speaker Series\, presented by Michigan Ross’ Center for Positive Organizations\, offers inspiring and practical science-based strategies to build and bolster thriving organizations. Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics\, students\, staff\, and leaders. \n\nAbout the talk: \n\nBusiness leaders have tremendous power to influence our society\, how it operates\, whether it is fair\, and the extent to which it impacts the environment. And yet\, we do not recognize or call out the responsibility that comes with that power. This session is meant to challenge future business leaders to think differently about their career\, its purpose\, and its value as a calling or vocation\, one that is in service to society. Its message is for current and prospective business students\, business leaders thinking anew about the role of business in society\, and the business educators that train all these people. \n\nWe face great challenges as a society today\, from environmental problems like climate change and habitat destruction\, to social problems like income inequality\, unemployment\, lack of a living wage\, and poor access to affordable health care and education. Solutions to these challenges must come from the market (as comprised of corporations\, the government\, and nongovernmental organizations\, as well as the many stakeholders in market transaction\, such as the consumers\, suppliers\, buyers\, insurance companies\, and banks)\, the most powerful institution on earth\, and from business\, which is the most powerful entity within it. \n\nThough government is an important and vital arbiter of the market\, business is the force that transcends national boundaries\, possessing resources that exceed those of many nations. Business is responsible for producing the buildings that we live and work in\, the food we eat\, the clothes we wear\, the forms of mobility we employ\, and the energy that propels us. This does not mean that only business can generate solutions or that there is no role for government\, but with its unmatched powers of ideation\, production\, and distribution\, business is positioned to bring the change we need at the scale we need it. Without business\, the solutions will remain elusive. Indeed\, if there are no solutions coming from the market\, there will be no solutions. And without visionary and service-oriented leaders\, business will never even try to find them. \n\nAbout Hoffman: \n\nAndy Hoffman is the Holcim (US) Professor of Sustainable Enterprise at the University of Michigan\; a position that holds joint appointments in the Stephen M. Ross School of Business and the School for Environment and Sustainability. Professor Hoffman's research uses organizational behavior models and theories to understand the cultural and institutional aspects of environmental issues for organizations. \n\nHe has published over 100 articles/book chapters\, as well as 18 books\, which have been translated into five languages. In this work\, he focuses on the processes by which environmental issues both emerge and evolve as social\, political\, and managerial issues\, including: the evolving nature of field level pressures related to environmental issues\; the corporate responses that have emerged as a result of those pressures\, particularly around the issue of climate change\; the interconnected networks among non-governmental organizations and corporations and how those networks influence change processes within cultural and institutional systems\; the social and psychological barriers to these change processes\; and the underlying cultural values that are engaged when these barriers are overcome. He also writes about the role of academic scholars in public and political discourse. \n\nAmong his list of honors\, he has been awarded the Aspen Institute Faculty Pioneer Award (2016)\, American Chemical Society National Award (2016)\, Strategic Organization Best Essay Award (2016)\, Organization & Environment Best Paper Award (2014)\, Maggie Award (2013)\, JMI Breaking the Frame Award (2012)\, Connecticut Book Award (2011)\, Aldo Leopold Fellowship (2011)\, Aspen Environmental Fellowship (2011 and 2009)\, Manos Page Prize (2009)\, Aspen Institute Rising Star Award (2003)\, Rachel Carson Book Prize (2001)\, and Klegerman Award (1995). \n\nHis work has been covered in numerous media outlets\, including the New York Times\, Scientific American\, Time\, the Wall Street Journal\, National Geographic\, Atlantic\, and National Public Radio. He has served on numerous research committees for the National Academies of Science\, the Johnson Foundation\, the Climate Group\, the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development and the Environmental Defense Fund. Prior to academics\, Andy worked for the US Environmental Protection Agency (Region 1)\, Metcalf & Eddy Environmental Consultants\, T&T Construction & Design\, and the Amoco Corporation. Andy serves on advisory boards for ecoAmerica\, Next Era Renewable Energy Trust\, SustainAbility\, the Michigan League of Conservation Voters\, the Center for Environmental Innovation\, and the Stanford Social Innovation Review. \n\nHost: \n\nSara Soderstrom\, Associate Professor of Organizational Studies and Program in the Environment \n\nSeries Sponsors: \n\nThe Center for Positive Organizations thanks Sanger Leadership Center\, Tauber Institute for Global Operations\, Samuel Zell & Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies\, and Diane (BA ‘73) and Paul (MBA ‘75) Jones for their support of the 2021-22 Positive Links Speaker Series. \n\nSeries Promotional Partners: \n\nAdditionally\, we thank Ann Arbor SPARK and the Managerial and Organizational Cognition (MOC) Division of the Academy of Management for their Positive Links Speaker Series promotional partnerships.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:WDI\, U-M Poverty Solutions Hosts Inclusive Fintech Pioneer Collins
DESCRIPTION:Traditional surveys and questionnaires can be imprecise methods for understanding the needs and motivations of low-income and vulnerable populations. In a Feb. 17 virtual discussion\, acclaimed author and entrepreneur Daryl Collins will explore how technology can help researchers\, nonprofits and businesses engage and serve these communities around the world.\n\nDuring the talk\, Collins will share examples of how her company\, Decodis\, is using technology to collect and analyze qualitative data in a more scalable and lower-cost manner. Collins will share examples of collecting data using WhatsApp audio responses to understand changes in gender norms and assessing Google Play reviews of digital lending apps in India. In both examples\, Collins will share how she and her team used Natural Language Processing (NLP) – a common market tool - to detect key topics and phrases to unpack the meaning of the responses. She’ll also share how she and her team analyzed speech signals (such as pitch\, duration of responses and voice modulation) in the audio files to determine whether the respondent was engaged in their responses\, when the respondent was unsure\, and when the respondent gave them a “canned response” — i.e.\, telling the researchers what he/she thought the researchers wanted to hear.\n\nThe William Davidson Institute and the University of Michigan’s Poverty Solutions are co-sponsoring the talk\, which begins at 5 p.m. is free and open to the public. \n\nAs a pioneer working at the intersection of finance and human vulnerability\, Collins has built a broad portfolio of work with financial service providers\, foundations\, bilateral donors and governments. Collins’ work is grounded in a deep understanding of the financial lives of individuals. She is the author of the ground-breaking “Portfolios of the Poor” and creator of the Financial Diaries\, a research tool used in over 10 countries\, including South Africa\, Kenya\, Mozambique and Tanzania. \n\nPeople living at or near poverty levels are less likely to speak their minds when responding to surveys and other efforts to collect data. This hesitancy is understandable\, but it also creates a real challenge for researchers\, enterprises and policymakers to better understand their needs\, said Heather Esper\, Director of WDI’s Performance Measurement & Improvement group.\n\n“Daryl Collins is truly a pioneer in collecting and analyzing data to better understand the lives of low-income and vulnerable individuals at scale\,” Esper said. “The qualitative methods she uses shed more light on what individuals are saying by accounting for how they say it.”\n\nCollins recently established Decodis with a team of linguists and Natural Language Processing data scientists. Decodis seeks to advance scale and robustness in qualitative research techniques by providing tech-led consumer research methods that are insightful\, scalable and low cost. The Decodis team is currently working on a range of projects across a breadth of countries\, languages and sectors to explore new ways of both collecting and analyzing open-end response data. \n\nCollins holds bachelor’s and master's degrees in economics from the London School of Economics and a Ph.D. from New York University. She spent the last decade as Managing Director and CEO of BFA\, a niche financial inclusion consulting practice with offices in Boston\, New York\, Nairobi\, Accra\, New Delhi and Medellin.
