SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Wolverine Caucus
DESCRIPTION:Innovation Partnerships at the University of Michigan serves the U-M research community by supporting the commercialization of new research discoveries and technologies. Innovation Partnerships further partners with public universities across Michigan to bolster a statewide university technology commercialization ecosystem. This collaborative network is made possible by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) Entrepreneurship and Innovation initiative through a series of programs that provides resources to streamline critical innovation and technology commercialization support.\n\nThe resulting innovations directly support Michigan’s economic growth while improving the lives of our citizens. Nevertheless\, the state of Michigan remains an extremely challenging entrepreneurial ecosystem due to a lack of investment risk capital. A December 2021 Crain’s opinion piece by Reilly Brennan\, the Founder and General Partner at Trucks Ventures in California\, focuses on this issue(Michigan must stop letting other states profit from its innovators).\n\nWhy should Michigan’s decision makers care? The panel will discuss Michigan programs such as ADVANCE\, MTRAC\, and T3N and the role each plays in moving innovation. And while these funds have been critical addressing early startup investment challenges in Michigan\, start-ups have typically shifted focus to more mature companies and a conservative investment thesis. This creates a retention disadvantage for a state like Michigan. Acquiring the resources to ensure these critical innovators continue to contribute to our state’s economy and innovation ecosystem is crucial. The panel will review why it’s not the right time to back down. Michigan’s economy cannot afford to lose our edge if we don’t invest in critical economic development programs.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Building Translation Networks in the Midwest with HathiTrust
DESCRIPTION:In this event\, a group of scholars will participate in a workshop about the digitization of texts with non-Roman scripts on HathiTrust.\n\nWhile the HathiTrust Digital Library contains centuries-old digitized volumes in source languages such as Sanskrit and Chinese\, along with numerous historically significant translations of these works\, it has not yet developed tools for identifying the multiple connections between sources and translated works. This need is especially pronounced when source texts and translations are in non-Roman writing systems\, which are difficult to catalogue and especially to render searchable using OCR (optical character recognition).\n\nThe seminar is organized by Professsor Christi Merrill (UM Professor of Asian Languages and Comparative Literature)\, together with Barbara Alvarez (UM Library)\, Jeremy York (UM School of Information)\, Michael Furlough (Executive Director\, Hathi Trust)\, and Heather Christenson (Collections\, HathiTrust)\,\n\nSpeakers will also include: Sayan Bhattacharyya (Singapore University of Technology and Design)\, Leigh Billings (UM Library) and Glen Layne-Worthey (HathiTrust Research Center)\, as well as partners from Google involved with the digitization project.\n\nThe February 18th event will also feature lightning talks by researchers and instructors describing their engagements with specific examples in the HathiTrust repository written in non-European languages\, and in non-Roman writing systems.\n\nRegister for the event: https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJMucuGvqj0qG9W-WOwKFqp41OT6X5P7vAva

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Carrying the Torch
DESCRIPTION:Fire has profoundly influenced ecosystems across the planet. It is a natural phenomenon borne of lightning\, but it is also a cultural one carried in the hands of human beings. As the singular species with the ability to harness fire\, it has played a fundamental role in our own evolutionary history and that of the environments we inhabit. We have expanded the natural range of fire as we have expanded our own\, introducing it to areas not commonly ignited by nature’s lightning and in doing so co-authoring ancient evolutionary pressures that have kindled remarkable diversity in landscapes and ecosystems.\n\nSouthern Michigan was once a dynamic mosaic of prairies and open savannahs bearing little resemblance to the landscape of today. Sustained and shaped by frequent fire\, these rich ecosystems formed a peninsula of grasslands extending millions of acres across the southern half of the state. Today\, less than 0.01% of these fire-dependent ecosystems remain\, reduced to remnants over a remarkably short 200-year window during which time fire suppression replaced a vital culture of burning by the region’s indigenous people. Without regular fire\, deeply shaded forests overtook savannahs and prairies\, obscuring the memory of a land once dominated by grasslands and the flames that created them. As diverse communities of fire adapted species decline and are replaced by others whose evolutionary mechanisms perpetuate pyric aversion\, fire itself is less and less capable of re-entering the landscape the longer it is absent. The window for action grows smaller each passing year. \n\nCarrying the Torch explores the unique fire ecology of southern Michigan through the visual arts\, probing its rich history\, examining its critical ecological mechanisms\, and drawing into focus the conflicting cultural ethos surrounding fire on the landscape. Encouraging viewers to consider prescribed fire today as the continuation of a practice dating back to the very emergence of our species\, it suggests through the presentation of the scientific evidence that to inhabit the prairie peninsula of southern Michigan is to be a mutualist with fire\, a carrier of the torch.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Methods Hour: Adjudicating Theory and Methods in Psychological Science
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nAverages dominate psychological science: There are representative groups\, mean trajectories\, and generalizations to typical samples. However\, few people\, parents\, or clinicians would proclaim that they themselves\, or that their children or patients\, are average. In developmental science\, for instance\, individual youth are the focus of many eminent theories\, yet there is a shocking paucity of research methods—including study designs and analysis techniques—that truly afford individual-level inferences. The goal of this presentation is to instigate a discussion about the advantages of an idiographic approach to psychological science\, focusing on how research questions\, study designs\, and data analyses can be formed\, implemented\, and conducted in ways that optimize inferences about individuals instead of averages—and what challenges such an approach poses.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Neolithic Pathways in East Mongolian Plateau: Early Sedentism and Subsistence Strategy
DESCRIPTION:Although the harsh environment of the Mongolian Plateau was once assumed to be unable to support a fully sedentary lifestyle\, sedentism can be spotted across regions within the Eastern Mongolian Plateau during the Holocene Climatic Optimum. This talk will focus on both new and existing data from Early Neolithic sites on the East Mongolian Plateau to reveal a simultaneous shift towards increasing intensity and stability of site use\, with distinct variation in the organization of settlement and subsistence across biogeographic zones. Here\, the development of sedentary communities emphasizes the importance of climatic amelioration in the attempt towards sedentism in Mongolia Plateau\, and demonstrates how differences in ecological and cultural contexts can encourage various responses to the same environmental stimuli.
