DESCRIPTION:Muslim Women in the Digital Age: Podcasting\, Music\, and Illustration with Misha Euceph\, Emmen Ahmed\, and Aint Afraid\n\nFebruary 18th\, 2022 at 2:30pm ET\nRSVP: http://bit.ly/MuslimWomenDigital\n\nHow do Muslim women define themselves in the digital age? How do Muslim women\, particularly young Muslim women\, experience the online world\, and what role does the internet plays in their creative work? How do race and religion intersect in Muslim digital communities? Join the Global Islamic Studies Center at 2:30pm EST on February 18\, 2022\, as podcast host and producer Misha Euceph\, illustrator Emmen Ahmed\, and musicians and twin sisters Sakinah (Straingth) and Zakiyyah (WiZdumb) of the Muslim hip hop duo Ain’t Afraid\, discuss their digital lives. \n\nMisha Euceph’s podcast “Tell Them\, I Am” explores the lives and “small moments” of Muslims in the public eye\, and is produced by the Obama production company\, Higher Ground\, as a Spotify Original. Emmen Ahmed’s artwork plays with traditional Mughal miniature paintings\, Islamic art\, the female form\, and Bollywood imagery to hold a mirror up to South Asian Muslim women’s lives. The multi-talented hip hop/pop/soul/R&B artist duo Aint Afraid are singers\, songwriters\, rappers\, poets\, and changemakers\, whose mission of changing the world includes advocacy in issues related to poverty\, homelessness\, healthcare\, education\, hunger\, and mental health.\n\nIn this two-hour event\, each of the four speakers will have 15 minutes to speak about\, illustrate\, or perform what they do. We will then convene in a panel discussion where the artists respond to each other for 20 minutes\, followed by Q&A from the audience for 30 minutes.\n\nCome learn how these Muslim women experience the online world and what role the internet plays in their work: http://bit.ly/MuslimWomenDigital\n\nCosponsored by The Center for South Asian Studies\, The Digital Islamic Studies Curriculum\, Arab and Muslim American Studies\, American Culture\, The Digital Studies Institute\,The Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs\, The Institute for Research on Women & Gender\, The Women's and Gender Studies Department\,The Center for World Performance Studies\, The Stamps School of Art & Design\, & Room Project\n\n---\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event\, please reach out to us at islamicstudies@umich.edu\, we'd be happy to help. As you may know\, some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange\, so the sooner you can reach out to us the better.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Entanglement between matrix degrees of freedom and gauge theory counterpart of entanglement island
DESCRIPTION:In gauge/gravity duality\, matrix degrees of freedom on the gauge theory side play important roles for the emergent geometry. In this talk\, we discuss how the entanglement on the gravity side can be described as the entanglement between matrix degrees of freedom. Our approach\, which we call \"matrix entanglement\"\, is different from \"target-space entanglement\" proposed and discussed recently by several groups. The examples studied include a small black hole in AdS5*S5 that can evaporate without being attached to a heat bath\, for which our approach suggests a gauge theory counterpart of the entanglement island behind the horizon. Specifically\, we propose that the confined degrees of freedom in the partially-deconfined states correspond to the island. Intuitively\, the confined sector consists of D-branes sitting behind the horizon and sourcing the exterior geometry. \n\nThis talk is based on work in progress with Vaibhav Gautam\, Antal Jevicki and Cheng Peng.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Canceled: Smith Lecture - William Frank\, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
DESCRIPTION:Slow\, aseismic slip (such as slow slip and surface creep) is now recognized as the glue at tectonic plate boundaries that holds the earthquake cycle together. Since the first observations of surface creep along the San Andreas plate boundary more than 50 years ago\, advances in geophysical instrumentation and innovative observational approaches have revealed that faulting at major plate boundaries covers a broad spectrum of slip modes\, from fast earthquake ruptures to intermittent slow slip.\n\nToday\, the continuous GPS record and satellite imagery reveal the jerky\, intermittent nature of aseismic slip. The pattern that is emerging suggests that slow slip at plate boundaries and surface creep on major transform faults is not a steady\, continuous process as once thought\, but is rather a complex spatiotemporal cluster of interacting aseismic transients. I will present observations of aseismic slip rate variations from seconds to decades. These results suggest that slow slip is much more similar to earthquake slip than previously acknowledged\, with strong implications on our understanding of the dynamics of active faults.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary Workshop in American Politics (IWAP)
DESCRIPTION:The Interdisciplinary Workshop in American Politics (IWAP) is a forum where research is shared\, discussed\, and feedback is given. It is open to all students and faculty at the university. The five-minute fiesta Friday is an opportunity for any person to take five minutes to present a very early-stage research idea. The work will be circulated to attendees a week prior to the workshop and it is recommended that attendees review the paper. If you are not receiving these emails and would like to\, contact one of the coordinators at jadeburt@umich.edu or sfolson@umich.edu. After the research presentation\, designated discussants provide feedback followed by general questions and suggestions from the audience. The aim of the workshop is to help people improve and develop research projects whether they are early-stage or well-developed.\n\n*Please reach out to Jade Burt (jadeburt@umich.edu) or Shayla Olson (sfolson@umich.edu) to get the password.
