SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:MORE (FACULTY VIRTUAL) Session: Getting Your Mentoring Relationship Off to a Good Start
DESCRIPTION:This workshop helps enhance the mentoring relationship between the student and faculty mentor by facilitating the development of shared expectations. Mentors and mentees work independently in separate sessions to identify their own objectives and styles\, and consider strategies for dealing with possible challenges. Then\, student-faculty pairs work together to develop a written mentoring plan as a means of codifying some of the most important elements (needs\, goals\, mutual expectations) of a two-way mentoring relationship. Over 85 percent of Rackham doctoral students who have written mentoring plans report those plans to be useful.\nFaculty who have attended a MORE workshop in the past should feel free to join the workshop only for the student-faculty work together (the last hour of the workshop). Registration is still required of both the faculty and the student.\nOptional additional time for developing a mentoring plan is available from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.\nRegistration is required at: myumi.ch/35pgx\nSeparate registration for students is available at: myumi.ch/zwgZP\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Online Arabic placement test_May 11 (12pm-2:30pm)\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement Test\nAbout the test\nThe test is approximately two hours and a half in length\, and it is composed of three portions:\na. The writing portion is completed via Zoom and it is worth a total of 100 points.\nb. The reading portion is completed online through Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.\nc. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.\nImportant: The interview portion will be weighted most heavily as it will be used to validate performance on the other portions. The final result/score/rating will thus be based on the student’s performance on the interview above all. Rating of performance on the writing or reading portions is secondary.\nHow is the result calculated?\nStudents who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the language requirement.\nWhere can I view my results?\nPlacement results are posted within 7 business days after the test.\nYou will not be notified of your score automatically. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.\nImportant information about the test\n* Please note that only students who are participating in the orientations are eligible to take the online placement test. If you are an existing UM student\, please sign up to take the in-person placement test. \n* Placements are valid for only one year. If you fail to register in the course that you are placed in\, you will be required to retake the test.\n* Retaking the placement test is only permitted after the placement results expire.\n* The test assesses students’ proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA)\, NOT colloquial Arabic.\n* If you speak an Arabic dialect but you do not know how to read or write or have little knowledge\, feel free to register in Arabic 101.\n* Students who know some Arabic because they came from an Arabic-speaking household or have studied Arabic before\, must take the Arabic proficiency test in order to determine their placement.\n* Students who have taken Arabic at other institutions and wish to continue their Arabic study at UM must take the placement test to determine their level. Credits for Arabic study undertaken at another institution prior to joining UM or in a summer program while attending UM\, transfer in as generic departmental credits and students must take the placement test to determine credit equivalencies to UM courses.\n* If you place in or beyond the 401 level\, you will have satisfied the LSA language requirement. \n* Students are encouraged to take a placement test as early as possible in their studies in order to determine the level they should enroll in\, or if they test out of the language requirement. This is extremely important to avoid delays in graduation and complications with placement.\n* Arabic 101\, 201\, 401\, 501 are offered ONLY in the Fall semester\, and Arabic 102\, 202\, 402\, 504 are ONLY offered in the Winter semester.\n* Arabic 103 (the equivalent of Arabic 101 &102\, combined)\, Arabic 203 (the equivalent of Arabic 201 & 202\, combined) are offered in the Spring-Summer term. \nAbout the UM Arabic program\nUM’s Arabic curriculum is a dual register curriculum in which students learn to speak and understand either the Egyptian dialect or the Levantine dialect (the dialect of Jordan\, Syria\, Palestine and Lebanon) in addition to learning to read and write and understand formal Arabic (fuSHa). Students starting to learn Arabic\, if they have no background in Arabic\, can choose to take either dialect or can switch their dialect focus from one semester to the next. The dialect focus of each class section is indicated in the schedule of classes.\nIf you have questions regarding the placement test\, please contact the program director at\, mesarabicprogram@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Other:Molecular Understanding\, Design and Development of Zwitterionic Materials
DESCRIPTION:An important challenge in many applications is the prevention of unwanted nonspecific biomolecular and microorganism attachment on surfaces. To address this challenge\, our goals are twofold. First\, we strive to provide a fundamental understanding of nonfouling mechanisms at the molecular level. Second\, we aim to develop biocompatible materials based on the molecular principles learned. As a result\, we have shown that zwitterionic materials and surfaces are highly resistant to nonspecific protein adsorption and microorganism attachment from complex media. With zwitterionic coatings\, hydrogels or nanoparticles\, results show no capsule formation upon subcutaneous implantation in mice for one year\, expansion of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) without differentiation\, no anti-coagulants needed for artificial lungs in sheep\, no antibodies generated against zwitterionic polymers\, and environmentally benign marine coatings. Unlike poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)\, there exist diversified zwitterionic molecular structures to accommodate various properties and applications. Furthermore\, zwitterionic materials are super-hydrophilic while their PEG counterparts are amphiphilic. Currently\, we are integrating immunology into our biomaterials research and translating our biomaterials to applications ranging from cancer vaccine to precision medicine.\nShaoyi Jiang (Cornell University)
