SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Glitches in Art Historical Flow\, ca. 1750
DESCRIPTION:The history of ink painting in early modern China is often told as a history of uninterrupted lineages and seamless transmission through time. There were\, however\, passages in that history when transmission was not so certain\, and artists developed modes of painting that put under pressure teachings and standards inherited from the past. This was the case of Zheng Xie (1693-1765) whose monochrome ink orchids were conceived as a string of tiny but effective disruptions of the technical and aesthetic principles of monochrome ink painting. Focusing on Zheng Xie’s late production\, this talk explores what glitches\, errors\, and flaws tell us about mid-Qing artists’ attitudes toward the legacy of the past and the value they assigned to defective hands and imperfect tools to engage with a crumbling world.\n\nZoom webinar registration at: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Aqz73aUHScy8WtkDk28yhQ\n \n Michele Matteini is Assistant Professor at New York University. He specializes on painting and antiquarian culture of the Qing period. His book\, \"A Ghost in the City: Luo Ping and the Craft of Painting in Eighteenth-Century Beijing\" is forthcoming later this year.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Museums at Noon
DESCRIPTION:L’Internationale’s Democracy Pavilion for Europe aims to reenergize democracy as a desire and practice. It takes the arts’ potential as a starting point for imagining new epistemologies and ethics of living together within the limits of the planet. The pavilion responds to the current political moment and the fact that the idea of democracy that undergirded the post-1945 European order is in peril. Fostering open\, creative debate\, the pavilion serves as a source of inspiration to reframe art and museums as spaces for experimentation and analysis that critically engage current developments in Europe. The Democracy Pavilion is the response of L’Internationale to the European Cultural Foundation’s call to promote critical thinking and radical imagination. The panelists represent institutions affiliated with L’Internationale\, a confederation of seven European art museums from Belgium\, Spain\, the Netherlands\, Turkey\, Sweden\, Slovenia\, and Ireland. Taking the Democracy Pavilion as their core idea\, the presentations together explore new relations between arts\, heritage\, and emancipatory politics.\nRegister for webinar: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_I4gggi7aTMelYmPpRULnIw\n\nco-sponsored by the Center for European Studies

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Entrepreneurship and the entertainment industry with Yousef Ali
DESCRIPTION:Navigating today’s complex and rapidly changing music industry is a daunting task. Mythologies abound on the key steps you need to launch and sustain a music career\, but what does it really take to carve out a path that fulfills personal goals and makes the world a better place? Curated and hosted by Matthew Dear\, in collaboration with the University of Michigan EXCEL Lab\, this virtual seminar investigates those questions through the lens of five leaders who have paved unique\, transformative pathways to success. \n\nOver the course of Fall 2021\, Matthew Dear interviewed five luminaries who have carved out unique\, highly-impactful\, and innovative careers that intersect music\, entrepreneurship\, social impact\, and creative storytelling. These interviews propel through the personal stories of each guest to illuminate the complexity of finding one’s path to self-actualization\, while framing the circuitous paths that are central to nearly every successful professional arts journey today.\n\nYousef Ali\, Founder and CEO of Blast Radio\, has been a serial entrepreneur at the intersection of technology and entertainment for the last 15 years- having founded a digital strategy consultancy that serviced clients including Black Entertainment Television\, Viacom\, F.A.M.E. among many others. His first startup\, Fanclub\, re-envisioned celebrity/fan interaction through data science\, allowing top celebrities (including Lil Wayne\, Snoop Dogg\, Jeezy\, and more) to surgically identify and engage super fans. Yousef’s current venture\, Blast Radio\, creates an artist-fueled\, ephemeral\, global radio platform\, powered by a constellation of proprietary Blast Box devices that condenses a radio studio into a one button\, portable device.\n\nmore information and registration at https://myumi.ch/AwZre
